I have studied military history all my life. This film's depiction of war in the early modern period is as good as it gets. I detected no anachronisms and clearly the production designers understood how the weapons were utilized. The fencing, especially the duel between Inigo and Malatesta, is wonderful.

This is, and I mean this seriously with no irony, one of if not the best film I have ever watched. It’s stunningly beautiful, as many have said every scene a painting, but indeed, the story itself serves as such an incredible backdrop for this exploration of humanity itself. Who these people are, their exploits, such as this, would never have seen light of day perhaps if not for this film. Viggo’s wonderful, but basically every other actor nailed their role pitch perfectly. My favorite movie 100%.

One of the greatest films ever made and with a great cast. A film about Capt. Alatriste (Viggo Mortenson), a heroic figure of Spain’s 17th century imperial wars, becomes a mercenary. This underrated film is Mysterious, Thrilling, Adventurous, and Action packed. Alatriste is a film that has the rare vibe which movies today lacks. Personally, I give it 5 stars.

  • @kingwilson06ad

I have read all seven Alatriste books by Pérez-Reverte, swashbuckling masterpieces. The film is totally loyal to them. This movie is phenomenal in its execution. Artistic direction is as good as it gets. Mortensen delivers Alatriste with the stoic and fatalistic persona forged in the book series. King Philip IV, Conde-Duke de Olivares, and Francisco de Quevedo are magnificently cast.

Or idk you have a plethora of British historical epics like Zulu, Lawrence Arabia, Cromwell, Khartoum, The Charge of the Light Brigade that are pretty fucking great. Ppl tend to lump British films in with Hollywood all the time. And what about all the WW2 epics of Hollywood, Wanna dismiss all those too? Or the Westerns, or the ones about Roman history? The theme of Perez-Reverte's Alatriste novels is how the Spanish national character brought about their empire's demise. One of his observations is the five generation rule, in which a Spanish family takes two generations to obtain wealth and nobility, the middle generation produces people like the King in this film, and then two generations to decline until they are back where they started.

Gerry Leb true, although ironically Charles II was a pretty good king but, turned out he was as sickly as it gets thanks to the Habsburgs fucking each other and thus dying without a heir. One thing though thanks to the Tercios Spain was the world's major power, holding itself even though having something like 150 years of continuous war, having all kinds of shit thrown in our way, and thanks to the tercios we basically held on, after the tercios became outdated and having the Catalans making the usual shit they always do, the Spanish dominance came to an end.

It's hard to find a better film on its subject, and I know of none that shows warfare of the period as well. The implied social commentary is essential to his view. Thanks so much for posting.

The subs come so much later than the speech. This is troublesome - you cannot appreciate the emotion behind the words if you have to wait to read what it meant. Ruins the whole aesthetic. I know some Spanish so I don't need all subtitles and for a bit I could watch but it got way too bad at the first involved conversation in the drinking establishment.

I personally disliked the movie, as it is kind of frankenstein...between hollywood epics, spanish drama and old historic details not understandable for universal viewers(there is too much inner reference to things only people who know the period knows...) so the drama and the rithm is affected. Viggo also speaks a twisted spanish because his accent is argentinian and here tries to imitate castillian....but I think we had too many expectations, today, as I rewacth I like it a lot more.

It's extremely rare to see a movie taking place during XVII century, during the 30 years War, which is probably the most devastating conflict Europe as ever seen. In proportion, even more than the 2WW. I can only remind The Last Valley by Clavell. I like this one and Viggo gives it a plus cause he looks a bad-ass as usual. In my history book when I used to go to school I had read the oly two tercios that remeained in Rocroi where the Spanish one and that formed by veteran italians who fough in Flanders, while those formed by Flemish and German ran away. But on spanish Wikipedia from what I can understand says only the spaniard tercio was the last to resist, is it true?
