ALASKA Lynx vs. Squirrel Backyard City Battle

Спорт

Lynx vs Squirrel backyard battle in Anchorage! This is a little different than my normal skiing videos...
It was early in the morning and I heard some magpies squawking. I looked up to see a Lynx stalking a squirrel. I was super lucky and had my camera ready with fresh batteries, and started filming right as the action started. Initially it looked like the lynx has the upper hand, but the squirrel has some tricks up its sleeve too. Watch to the end to see what happens. Really interesting predator-prey behaviors.

Lynx is 10x bigger but still got faster reflex and moves faster than the squirrel. With no wasted motion. Lynx is always at the right place at the right time to deliver the blow. Lynx gives a 10 feet start to the squirrel and still catches it within a couple of movements. Simply amazing. The squirrel tries to escape up the tree but the lynx is even agile on the tree. The squirrel runs up to the first branch but the Lynx just knocks it to the ground with one swipe of the paw. The squirrel doesn't stand a chance. It's like me fighting Bruce Lee.

James, thanks for the comment. It was truly amazing watching the Lynx outmaneuver the squirrel IN the tree. The branches of that spruce are quite dense but somehow the Lynx was superior even in that tree environment with perfectly timed movements.

I love how the lynx is so confident that it can be relaxed and skilled enough to just hang out, but still checking surroundings. He/she either wore the squirrel down or maybe continued to inflict further injuries. I think the lynx was just going for bonus points throughout. Too bad the prey had to live through that process though.

I am not sure if the squirrel was stupid or not , but I think it might have been badly injured and / or stunned or might have been in shock due to the trauma that the cat had inflicted , that was probably why it couldn't have made the right choices when he had the chance to escape. These Lynx are such beautiful cats, and they should be protected from hunting, or have this very regulated, or they will become extinct. I love watching how this Cats take down their prey, as well as Bobcats. I understand their numbers have fallen considerably, and I'd like to see them protected. Great video here, and you would think the Cat would have killed the squirrel a long time ago, and got out of there, before a human or dog scared it away. Fun to watch though, and good for the Cat, unbelievable fast reflexes.

Juvenile lynx, I think... and he's a bit distracted, like he's not completely commited. He looks fit enough, so he probably wasn't really hungry... but the instinct is there. The squirrel is completely out-classed, and knows it. I would suspect that the squirrel sustained some internal damage in that first fury of blows (in the tree), because it is moving pretty sluggishly after that. The time to move, for the squirrel, was when the cat moved away to play king of the grass. It's clear at that point that the squirrel simply doesn't have anything left. For a moment there, I thought the lynx was going to get bored and leave. Maybe the lynx thought about it. Instinct wins in the end though. For the lynx, dinner and a movie.

I have hunted grey squirrels in my backyard and I can personally attest to their amazing reflexes and stamina. If you don't hit them in a vital area the little buggers will keep trying to escape. I can imagine how fast that squirrels heart must have been beating because I grabbed one just before it expired and I could feel the heart beat going full tilt. I also felt the moment the animals heart stopped. It's the first time I had experienced and witnessed the transitional moment from life to death knowing that it was by my hand. Maybe that sounds gruesome but it was my aiming mistake that caused the animal to suffer this much and I was trying to end the animals suffering as quickly as possible without endangering (rabies) myself in the process.

The consensus here is that the Lynx is playing with squirrel and honing its hunting skills. That might be true, but I wonder if this is instead instinct from the Lynx to protect itself from harm. Squirrels are not fearsome creatures, but I am sure that the mother lynx does not want to be bitten and scratched excessively, or bring a partially alive animal back to her kittens. After all, a small open infected wound could be a big problem for a wild animal. It seems like she may be be attacking, then pausing in hopes that the squirrel dies. When she tests for life and the squirrel moves, she hits again and then waits for death again. A more patient, calculated kill may be safer for the cat than a violent quick kill.

Apparently, the Lynx wasn't hungry - or he wouldn't have played with the Squirrel for three minutes.

To kill or not to kill,. That is the question. I guess the lynx wasn't that hungry or was it trying to make a stir fry out of it.

Don't think he's playing, probably less risky to let squirrel die in order to avoid getting bit by it.

Agree. It is a little known fact that the squirrels can bite back... I've heard that a squirrel could take off a claw with well-timed bite.
