Alaska Bull Moose Fight To The Finish!

Big Alaska Bull Moose Fighting -Start to Finish!
Left Hook finally returned to the valley and planted himself in 22's territory. We could see 22 a half mile away, bedded. He got up and started his slow/deliberate walk, grunting the whole way, audible across the valley despite the raging creek waters. He turned and headed up toward us, we knew Left Hook was somewhere in the hemlocks after a cow, but were waiting in a clearing in case he came out again. 22 started wagging from downhill, and then from the hemlocks came Left Hook, also wagging. Left Hook stopped to rake, and we knew this could erupt.
After jockeying for (SAFE) positioning, we were able to capture this amazing footage from two slightly different angles. It's the kind of thing one tends to watch a few times to appreciate the power and nuances as these massive animals go at it. The fur does fly. Enjoy!
Thanks for watching our channel, we are the husband/wife team of Rick and Libby Libbey, (Libby squared), New Hampshire wildlife photographers (and part time Alaska.) It is our passion to document wildlife of any kind, but moose are definitely at the top. In New Hampshire we spend a lot of our spring/summer hours in kayaks photographing loons and moose in the waters of New Hampshire. And hike many miles in Alaska seeking all manner of wildlife in the fall.

You are so right. t never ceases to amaze us how few serious injuries occur with these fights. We've witnessed several, known for a couple of injuries (eye, leg) but nothing that took a life. (We did not witness the tragic fight this year between Grumpy and the mystery bull, and are glad for that.) Want to keep ti that way! Meanwhile, Swagger lives, so he survived his leg injury, and Left Hook may be blind or partially so at least in one eye, but is otherwise thriving. Phew! Thanks for the comment!

I've read that given the amount of energy it takes for these big boys to fight and the serious damage they can do to each other, such fights are usually over pretty quickly with one bowing out rather than taking it to an extreme. Usually no one is badly hurt. This proves the theory. Aren't they absolutely magnificent?

It's true, they really aren't out to kill one another, just best the other. It's all about mating rights. That is the only reason they fight. It's rare that death occurs. There can be lockups that will kill both bulls but that's not their intent; that's a freak thing. And the bull that spins out or calls uncle is allowed to leave without a chase. It is respected. Sometimes they are more civilized than humans. Thanks very much for the comment, you're so very right, Cindy!

I was glad to see them both walk away and live to fight another day. It looks to me like there is plenty of land out there for both of them to have their very own territory without a fight to the finish. They really are magnificent creatures! I love watching the video of the man who takes his trash out to the shed and when he turns around a HUGE moose is walking toward him. He immediately goes back in the shed and shuts the door and the moose stands there and waits for him to come out for just a few minutes and then goes on about his business. I have watched that video a dozen or more times.

They usually do walk away, thankfully Maryann, otherwise I'd not want to film a fight! And while bulls do tend to keep to a particular area, t's not about territory they fight over, it's the cows. So wherever the cows go, the bulls want to be. In this instance the younger bull had some cows in the older bull's area, because the older bull had wandered another mile and some away for other cows. It gets crazy out there. And I saw that video too, of the guy and the shed. Funny stuff! Thanks for watching!!

Great photography, and right there in our backyard (sort of). Having just been 'up there' today to look around and walking off trail makes one realize how adept these guys are at getting around in the first place, not to mention fighting, which includes backward and forward movements. We little humans would have broken a leg in that uneven terrain in no time, if we had to maneuver without eyes fixed to the ground.

All our focus is on our feet and keeping our gear from peril. I envy the grace of these moose to cover the ground the way they do. They look like they should be tromping and stumbling but they instead look more like ballet dancers.

I slowly looked over my shoulder and there stood a moose much like in this video. He seemed dark, huge paddles, seemed to rival a large horse in size. I turned around a bit more and our eyes met. The guy who found them got the funds together to have them rebuilt in taxidermy from their locked antlers/skulls back still intact. Amazing! And yes, these antlers weigh over 70# for the pairs. At any time a bull can opt (whine) out and that will be the outcome, there will be no fight or chase, it's over. The other grunts his victory. But here, there was no opting out and at some magical point they went at it. The younger Left Hook, despite his strength and crazy antlers, was bested by the older, wiser, wider racked 22. (The loser is always the bull who runs off first.) No blood no foul, Left Hook took his bat and went home. 22 claimed his cows back. Fights generally aren't meant to be deadly, one bull usually concedes the fight, as in this case. The winning bull lets the loser go. But if evenly matched, they do go at it hard, for sure. The winner seemed more winded afterwards than the loser here. But he won. Thanks for watching and commenting!

In the past we have indeed felt the tundra shake to the rumble of two behemoths going at it. Just amazing. We never know if it's actually going to end up in a brawl; at times even these two seemed more like they were going to spar than fight. But this year Left Hook has come to his own and wanted all in. It's unnerving stuff to film because of safety coming first, but we had nice big trees to dash into for cover if need be. Glad you're on board, Kat!

Thank you so much, we got lucky but we also really worked to get this. What made it awesome was that they chose a rather open arena for this battle. That's unusual. We really thought there would be pieces of antlers lying around after this one but noooo. They were both intact after the fight. Thankfully! They are gorgeous, and massive. You're so right.

Two years ago as I was driving home one night just before dark a big bull ran out of tge woods in front of me. He was still all sweaty and had one side of his rack broken off. He was body wise the biggest bull I've seen alive. I'd sure wish I could of seen the massive bull He was fighting with. 😊 I live and own property right in the thick of it all. I'm very fortunate to live where I do.

High ground is always the advantage with these fights. Did you see Left Hook though? Pushed 22 up and back?! He’s come to his own this year. Last year he was too pretty (🐕) to fight. Haha. 😆 We joked that if he’d only look in a puddle 🪞 to see himself he may have been more of a player 💪 but wow this year? sally, bar the door! Left Hook is In The Building. (He’s fought someone since and has a nasty injury to/over his right eye. 👁 Haven’t shared any of that yet. Kinda ugly. But he’s acting like a big bad bull during the rut, chasing cows all over! These animals are TOUGH! Thanks 🙏 for watching and commenting MP!😊

Most fights end with a bull running off. In fact every fight we've witnessed and filmed have ended that way. Only the one ended tragically, and that was this year with Grumpy, when both bulls died in a heap in thick trees. Suspected that they both suffered broken necks. Agreeing to disagree is better all the way around. Thanks for the comment!
