That's actually because moose regrow their antlers every year. When antlers first grow in, they're covered in a soft, furry layer of skin that is very similar to velvet; once the antlers are an appropriate size for the animal, they have to scrape all this stuff off, which is a bloody process that makes both moose and deer look like slasher villains.

It’s the same for moose, when they aren’t actively threatened they just chill and munch on whatever’s nearby. If you want to see not chill then look at any of the small non domestic cat species

Now I'm from NY so I sometimes can get annoyed when in films the city looks so magical and nice when most of it in reality is a disgusting mess But Alaska has always been someplace I wanna go mostly for the landscapes. I'd like to "escape" into nature for a bit. I'd deff go in the summer, august or early september though. Cant imagine being there for more than 2 weeks max.

My absolute favorite animal. They are indeed units. Stories of adult moose taking on packs of wolves where the wolves give up aren't uncommon. Also, with a deer you have a pretty good chance of surviving an accident with one. With a moose? Far, far less likely. There is a reason why the infamous handling test for cars is called the moose test

I have met moose 2 times in the forest in Norway at close hold. One time i was skiing in Oslo, and the moose was just a few meters outside the ski track. i threw him a bun with raisins in it, and the moose sniffed on it and took a bite. it then spat it out and started shouting, while trampling the bun. but it was never threatening to us on the track, and it moved on after a little bit, probably pissed off from the bad taste. The second time me and my friend was camping in the woods east of Oslo during summer. we were running for a bit in the wooden tracks and suddenly in front of us stood a moose and its child, like 10 meters in front of us. the child, size of a huge dog hid behind its mother. we now just stood still and exchanged eye contact with the mother, and after a short moment we backed off a bit before heading back the track.

Canadian moose lover here. The term "palmated" used to describe antlers that are shaped like a hand (with palm and outstretched fingers)... it has nothing to do with palm leaves. Also, moose aren't the only deer with palmated antlers, fallow deer are the other deer species that have palmated antlers.

  • @Birdstangg

FYI a lot of the "whitetail" deer you showed were actually mule deer and Blacktail deer, which are ironically experiencing population declines from whitetail deer expansion and diseases as well. Also to throw in, the clip at 1:136 was a Cow elk.
