Alaska Airlines Solar Eclipse Flight
Ғылым және технология
You can’t help but get excited when you fly with us and see a solar eclipse. We adjusted Flight #870 from Anchorage to Honolulu on March 8, 2016 just so our passengers could catch the solar eclipse from 35,000 feet. Read more on our blog: bit.ly/1UNYZbi

An angle from this high in altitude really puts into perspective the fact you’re in the moon’s shadow during a solar eclipse. Really incredible video.

@@ronkalinovsky6898 That’s not how shadows work my guy.
@superkaeldev861
Ай бұрын
@@nattybumppo4151That is how shadows work, in fact. It’s just that most light sources on earth come from small sources that are smaller than the object that the shadow is from, so their shadows seem to get wider at a further distance rather than smaller. As for shadows from sunlight, they usually appear to stay the same size because of how far away the sun is. However, in the case of an eclipse, the relative distances between the earth, sun, and moon, and the fact that the sun is bigger than the moon, cause a cone-shaped shadow to be projected onto the earth, and the spot where the shadow touches the earth surface is far smaller than the moon - only a few miles across.

You provided one of the few comments in support of the gentleman filming the event. 99.8% of the comments just show how shallow a mind with computer/cell phone and a data plan can be. It's called PASSION....the gentleman was PASSIONATE about the rare event he was witnessing. A total solar eclipse is a MONUMENTAL phenomemon. Most of these idiots are clueless to the perfect mechanics, geometry and timing that must come together to produce such an event. And to view it - from a commercial jetliner - is a truly awe-inspiring experience to which the gentleman was reacting. The fact that he was reciting the correct terms ("prominence", "diamond ring", "Baily's Beads") throughout the recording showed this is something he had more than a passing acquaintance with. Then again, some people get that excited about Game of Thrones or some similar mindlessness.

That really was super cool of you guys to spend the extra money in fuel to adjust the flight path to give your customers a truly once in a lifetime amazing view of an eclipse from the air! That's some few people will ever get to experience.
That’s pretty much what it feels like to experience totality. Exhilarating! I saw live in Oregon in 2017. Epic experience!!
To me, the most amazing is to see the actual shadow on the clouds.
I think this is pretty cool! Here in Texas in 2017 we only got a quarter of coverage. I was so excited tho even tho we only got a quarter.

people sitting at the left side window seats: are we a joke to you?
Waiter: how spicy would you like your curry? Man: Totality!
When I was in Tunnel Hill Illinois for the 2017 eclipse, we actually briefly saw the shadow sweep over us. It was absolutely blink and you miss it but it was still visible coming over the hills. Utterly stunning. I'd have given a finger to be on that plane.
The fact that we have our technology today to document these events is pretty outstanding. I can’t imagine how earlier civilizations reacted to this!! Just amazing!!
Having once been under the shadow of the moon during the 11 Aug 1999 total solar eclipse in Europe, I can fully understand his excitement. There's something distinctly primordial about the sun suddenly disappearing. I had exactly the same reaction and burst into tears on my recording of that day. Now I'm looking forward to being in Oregon in Aug 2017

I'm not sure I'll be able to see this coming eclipse because of the clouds, but this video gave me so much joy. To hear everyone so blown away and in awe of something so simple, yet SO PERFECT. Everyone coming together to just look at a beautiful thing of nature. Thank you for this video. Even if I cannot see the eclipse when it happens, I'll think of this video, and think of the millions of other people across the world actually seeing it at that moment. SO BEAUTIFUL. Too know that millions and millions of people will all look to the sky for a few minutes, all together, to witness it.
Wow, that is so cool. Saw it from my driveway, top down sitting in my Toyota convertible in Fort Worth, Texas.

Yeah friend this man is killing everyone off by laughter and anger. Really this is gonna be a nice joke with this guy. If I saw this guy today, bet I would really kill myself on laughter!
Does anyone pay attention to the eclipse instead of the guy

I tried, but it was too hard. I should have put mute or put my earphones down, but I was hoping the guy would shut up at some point.

I’ve seen two total and one partial. One from a small airplane and two from the ground. It is one of the most incredible natural events ever ! Thanks for a front seat view. A video is neat but nothing like the experience in person.
That was beautiful. I would love to see the total eclipse one day.

Don't know where you're located but if you're American, there will be another total eclipse in April 2024, starting in Texas, to New York, into Canada. If you're American or Canadian you MUST find a way to travel to see it. Sleep in a car if you can't afford a hotel. Skip work/school for a few days. Better yet get a group of people together to share costs and carpool. It is *truly* that incredible
thank you for posting this, can only imagine how great it must have been to experience such an event
