Alaska Airlines Great American Eclipse flight
Catching a solar eclipse in a plane might seem like a flight of fancy, but we’re not ones to turn down a challenge. Alaska Airlines put together a team of aviators, astronomers and umbraphiles to catch The Great American Eclipse on August 21, 2017. The result? A once-in-a-lifetime view of totality from 38,000. Details: blog.alaskaair.com/alaska-air...
Shot 100% on GoPro.

In the end, yeah wowww!
I was lucky enough to get to watch the totality from right off my back deck of my house in South Carolina USA. Lawn chair, glasses, video cam, some beer, and a once in a lifetime event. A big thank you to the good lord for the amazing show!
For those criticizing the repeated "OMG", just know that totality is nothing like anything you've ever experienced. During the 1991 total eclipse, I was in La Paz, Baja Mexico, saying the same "OMG" >10x as well. Incredible experience.

I think people have two modes, OMG mode and speechless mode. I was speechless a couple of weeks ago. I literally couldn't think of what to say right at totality. :) EDIT: And starwars mode before totality "Almost there..."

I was in Cherokee, North Carolina for that eclipse and it was a full eclipse right in the middle of the path. I didn't say oh my god. I just looked at it which lasted about 3 minutes or so, things got dark, the Cherokee started whooping all around you because you're up very high on Soho mountain on Cherokee land. It was very cool but it's just an eclipse. Why is the media telling us to get more food, water and fuel for this one? Why is the April 8th eclipse being turned into something biblical? The answer is to scare the shit out of everyone, and it's working. Because now they will do things like shut down the phones or even the power grid for a while and blame it on a cosmic event! Now that's if they do that and when I mean they, I'm talking about the people that control and own everything. So buckle up and get the popcorn ready, the eighth day, the eight cities and the year equaling 8, this eclipse is biblical according to many sources and the media, when it's just an eclipse. They want you to be afraid, be very, very afraid.

Absolutely amazing eclipse video. Watching moon's shadow moving away on the clouds at 0:30, and then again at 0:51, OMG, simply the best ever phenomenon seen in a video.

It’s 2024! I took Alaska Airlines to fly to Mazatlan!!! 2 weeks until TOTALITY!!!!
Nice . I love it.
Amazing
VERY COOL !
I wouldn't be surprised if Alaska Airlines would want to do the solar eclipse chase someday as a tour especially after getting the next generation SSTs. That would be an epic experience for sure, with totality lasting as long as possible, especially replicating the famous Concorde flight from the 1973.
I saw the eclipse from the ground on Monday. Your brain short circuits at a sight of that magnitude. So I don't blame that guy going nuts on the video, I would just watch it with the sound off, because I was saying the same thing. I'm impressed he wasn't cursing.
I can still hear Oh my god , look at that !!!
Were u over carbondale
Did the plane lean to the one side with everyone huddling around the windows?
In 1996 I was six years old, but I even remember well how I felt that for a moment the temperature in the room became a little cool from the eclipse of the Sun.
That was so bad ass!!
really? you got just the vid of the eclipse? Great commercial for Alaska Air...
Great!!
How do you get on the flight?
was waiting for that guy to say "HAA GOTTEEEM"
Look at it !
What the heck? Did I just get suckered into watching a bloody commercial? LOL!
Nice
As much as I would love to see it from the air, there are so many little things you miss out on if you're not on the ground. You can feel the air become cooler. And you're shadow becomes elongated and thin
@kilroy987

And one flight delay is all it takes to miss it, when you could have planned to be somewhere else for it.

The camera's fish eyed lenses are distorting the shots it's obvious. Go look at a basic google search and type in flat horizon pictures and you will get thousands. 35,ooo feet isnt jack. I've seen 219,ooo with no curve. And hundreds at all levels. Their is no eight inches curve squared per mile anywhere on this plain. Sea level, air plane not air curve and sea curve. Ask the pilot what the gyroscope does. Look up people bringing aboard levels during flight or on their phones. Notice the 5oo miles per hour plane doesn't have to constantly drop the nose for a 166,666. 666 inch supposed curve in an hour. Crazy how the curvature rate seems to often use 666 with these freemasons and their science.
@charleysturbos7320
6 жыл бұрын
Then you see the 31 second mark and you realize , damn i shouldn't of spoken up. Go pro in your 16 seconds will do that. They have 2oo,ooo footage from Navy jet that shows flat horizon. You never ever ever see curve or measure the curve of eight inches squared anywhere or anytime except NASA cgi or wide angle fish eyed lenses.

Mike O'Hernia They have a small hole in the middle to do that.
0:53 something extremely disturbing, for size reference, I googled how wide is the moon and it's roughly 2200 miles. I then google how wide is the united stated, its roughly 2700 miles coast to coast.thats a small difference between them. why does that shadow seem only a couple hundred miles across? 😨😱
@audiohostem
2 жыл бұрын
It has to do with the immense size of the sun relative to the moon and earth. If you have a large light source shining onto something, and then place a small obstruction in between, the large light source will spill light over and around the obstruction, and the shadow cast by it will be smaller than the obstruction itself. The larger the distance between the obstruction and the surface the light is originally being shown at, the smaller the shadow will be. I probably did a poor job of explaining it but if you Google search "how big is the solar eclipse shadow" and go to the images tab, there should be a lot of diagrams that explain it better.
