"You" is Alan and "he" is Scratch, except in the last verse, where the "you" being pulled into the story is Saga, and the "he" doing the writing in his cabin is Alan. Presumably this was meant to foreshadow certain plot twists...

For anyone interested, I went ahead and did some translation notes. A lot of the actual lyrics take slight liberties with translation to convey the meaning or spirit of the song. As such, the sentences in Finnish can also be translated in other ways. First off: Finnish has no gendered pronoun in the form of he/she/they, but merely a universal "hän." In this song all uses of "he" can thus mean any gender. Second note: The song kind of fits well into a category of Finnish music that is very mournful and can be summarized with everything basically going wrong, with the singer lamenting this fact with occasional undertones of hope/some sort of strength to go on found though it all/the singer recounting a somber tale. This kind of music is so common in Finland, it's very easy to spot the musical trope of "everything just goes horribly wrong despite trying." Like a nightmare, he comes for you Kuin painajainen, hän luoksesi saapuu - "luoksesi saapuu" is more akin to "arrives at you", where you are the destination. Or at the destination. Draped in shadows Hänet verhottu on varjojen kaapuun - "cloaked/disguised/veiled in a robe/cloak of shadow" - though this can be simplified to draped in shadows. Many tales are told about him Monta tarinaa hänestä kerrotaan - nothing much to see here, though usually tarina/tarinaa (plural) gets translated to stories. As tales is a synonym, it was picked for having a good ring to it, appropriate to the context. You can never escape him Häntä pakoon et pääse sä milloinkaan - Literally "Him/her/them you shall never/never shall escape" - uses the more artistic lyrical tone that can be applied to song/poem form Finnish to color the language a bit by meddling with sentence structure and adding tune to it. He stares at you in the mirror Hän peilistä sua tuijottaa - more akin to "he stares at you from the mirror", though simplified it becomes the above. The heat of murder like a crown burning on his crown Murhan polte, se kruunu loimuaa. - more akin to "the burn/heat of murder, that crown which blazes/glows" You know his gaze, you can never forget Tuon katseen tunnet, et voi unohtaa. - more akin to "you know that look/gaze, (which) you can't forget." Sometimes in Finnish you don't need to say certain words for it to be understood, that they can be there. More common when speaking/writing about what someone said in the language to shorthand sentences. Even with his gaze hidden behind a veil of blood Vaik' kasvot piiloutuu veriverhon taa. - more akin to "even though (his/someone's) face does hide behind a veil/curtain of blood" - another more flowery lyrical use of the language. Vaik' is shorthand for vaikka "even though", used to achieve a more lyrically satisfying result. It's nightless night It eats your mind On yötön yö - The nightless night (yötön yö) is an actual, real world thing. It's what we call summer in Northern Finland, Lapland, where the sun never goes down. This is due to how the angle of that particular Northern Hemisphere corner of Earth during the summer makes the sun come at an angle rather than "go down under the horizon." As such it's permanent light be it day or night, though nights are still chillier than daytime. And yes, if you aren't used to it trying to sleep in, it does eat your mind a bit. Se järjen syö - Järki is not really one's mind (mieli), but more so the use of intelligence. Or having sense in a matter. So this more or less means what is actually being sung is that the nightless night eats your sense, making you go mad/insane. It's nightless night It eats at a man On yötön yö Se miehen syö - more akin to it eats a man, rather than eating at one. Soon the dance turns into a game tag played with knives. Puukkohippaan tanssi pian vaihtuu - More akin to "the dance soon turns into a game of knife tag". Puukkohippa (knife tag) is a playful, more jovial expression for talking about knife fights/the act of running away from someone out to do you harm armed with a knife with them giving chase/running to hide from someone doing the prior. A puukko is a certain kind of traditional Finnish knife, though the word can also be applied to any knife. Not all knives are puukkos though. Also, not an actual game. The bloody mouth twists into a grin Irveen päättyy jo verinen suu. - more akin to "the bloody mouth ends/yet ends in a grin" - though the translation can be used again due to how artistically and flowery the phrase is faced. The cap of the booze bottle has gone missing Viinapullosta korkki hukataan. - more akin to "the cork of the wine bottle was lost/got lost/was misplaced" - might seem out of place, but if communicating feelings of hopelessness then few things probably are more hopeless to some Finns than losing the cork on their bottle of booze while too drunk/it's too dark to find it again making closing it for neat transportation impossible. See my second note at the start. The knives are out with a rattle, the last thing you will hear Tupenrapinan vain kuulee korvissaan. - more akin to "the rattle of the sheath is all you will hear/the rattle of the sheath is all your ears will hear" It's nightless night The light is lost Se valon syö - literally: "it eats the light" It's nightless night All hope is lost Se toivon syö - Literally: "it eats the hope" It's nightless night Se rakkaan syö - lit: "it eats your loved one" It's nightless night It devours us all Se kaiken syö - lit: "it eats all" He's been called by many names Monen nimin häntä on kuultu kutsuttavan. - Difficult sentence to translate fully, as well as it's sang in such a lovely lyrical way. It's more akin to: "he has been heard to have his name called in many ways" Like a dying man curses death itself Niin kuin kiroaa kuolemaa kuoleva. - more akin to "like one who is dying, curses death" - death here is death in general, and not personalized into something. And prays to a god of dark myths Rukoilee synkkien myyttiemme jumalaa. - prays to a god of our dark myths Old Scratch, Satan, our savior Vihtahousua, saatanaa, vapahtajaa. - old vihtapants/trousers, Satan, our savior. A vihta is the branch set up, sometimes used in a sauna (usually around Juhannus summer festivities) to hit one's self to increase blood flow. Vihtahousu is another name for the devil. I am not completely sure, but I would speculate the funny thing of using Satan in context with our savior is basically in line with the "everything goes to heck" genre of songs. Where basically the devil coming along to take someone along with them is seen as preferable to continuing to endure the horrible existence/the devil coming along is desirable so they can be fought rather than to have events manipulated to make one miserable. Finns do have a very interesting, very varied from person to person region to region relationship with the concept of the devil, where he can be Satan the great evil, a second fiddle evil to someone else's doings to highlight how bad they are, the chief evil with someone being their second in line to highlight how evil they are, a jovial jokester who does mean spirited pranks, a prankster who just messes with people, someone you mention gleefully when things are good (assumably so he doesn't come ruin the moment), someone you curse when things go bad, a rebel who didn't agree with his dad and thus has a complicated family relationship leading to him being a bit of relatable screw up, a fan of metal music who likes to hang out at the local bar, an unpredictable manipulator who might help or harm (but only for his own malicious ends) depending on what mood he is in, someone who shows up to enjoy moments of misery out of sadism, or a lot of other things. His concept is very flexible, and this is highlighted in the Finnish language. A black cloud boils inside his skull Musta pilvi päässä kiehuu - A black cloud boils in (a/the/their) head It explodes out and rages in the night Ulos räjähtää ja yössä riehuu - unlike its English spin, has no "se" at the start which would be "it". With boundless joy in his eyes Silmissä riemu rajaton. - "boundless/limitless joy/revelry in the eyes" He has come, it has come! Tullut on, se tullut on! - literally: "it came, it has came!" - Considering how triumphant this part of the song seems, it is the part of the "everything goes wrong" song where a singer finds some vestige of strength to carry on from either within, outside, or by doing something. Being angry as heck at things going wrong and screaming furiously in rage at the night would be a display of this kind of "I will not give in!" type of display of stubbornness. While subjective, I also get the sense it's glee at the previously mentioned mastermind of all of ones adversities finally making themselves known, so rage filled gleeful retributive fury can be used to force them to stop the torment over the game's harder to do anything about continuing. Or to go down swinging, with it being a better alternative to the torment continuing, I suppose. To the bottom of the well, into a pile of corpses Kaivon pohjalle ruumiskasaan. No one will make it alive though this night Tästä yöstä ei selviä kukaan - lit: "no one will survive this night." In his dark room he writes Synkäs' huoneessaan kirjoittaen. - lyrical phrasing He fishes you into his verse from his fewer dreams. Onkii houreistaan sinut säkeeseen. - lit: "fishes you from his fewer dreams into a verse." He stares at you in the mirror The heat of the murder like a crown burning on his brow You know his gaze, you can never forget Even with his face hidden behind a veil of blood It's nightless night It will steal your soul Se sielun syö! - "it eats your soul" It's nightless night It will devour you. Se sinut syö! - "It will eat you!"

Viinapullosta korkki hukataan - This has nothing to do with "harder to transport booze", it is kind of metaphor for not being able to stop drinking. Cork is lost, can't help but drink everything. Getting even more insane and insane. This whole song is lovely Lovecraftianish interpertation all stress and violence manifesting to explosion and turning insane during Midsummer. Vapahtaja here means - I think - One who releases human from social obstructs and back to animalistic sadism and violence. "Hän" here means clearly oneself, dark side of humanity. Yourself.

@@valtteri5563 I'd agree with you that it's also possible to see it like that. Good input to put here. It took me a while to do, so I probably didn't finish that thought through to how it then concludes into having to logically drink the booze as the cork got lost/can also be a metaphor to drinking problems. Highlights the tricky bits with translating artistic stuff without proper access to the people behind it. Especially because it runs the gauntlet of how you do the translating: Literally, keeping the cultural lens, transforming it so it makes more sense, choices in wording, etc etc etc. It's especially tricky because art is inherently subjective and transformative, so even with authorial intent (remembering that the author is always dead in relation to their work even with it, so no author can dictate their work's meaning as all meaning it gains once published comes from the people who read/hear/listen to it) art of any kind can be interpreted and read in so many different ways. Explaining how it's interpreted by any one person can also be incredibly tricky.

OG Finnish lyrics mean "the savior". Vapahtaja = a/the savior. (Meidän) vapahtajamme = our savior. Ahti is singing in his own language, so you need to consider it in that context. The translator had some artistic license when making the translation.

Well, in mythology Finnish gods and the lesser spirit beings (literally "those that rule, command or master") are pretty eldritch ranging from indiffferent to actively hostile when it comes to humans. It is best that one shows respect when invoking them or crossing their territory, and not overstay one's welcome. Notably, here Ahti is using the absence of a subject as a passive i.e. someone out there is calling for Scratch, and Ahti is not very respectful and almost mocking. Many Finnish synonyms for Satan are mocking and disrespectful. I won't go through the etymology and the cultural context, but as a digestable bit on what Vihtahousu Americanised as Old Scratch actual means: "the old poisonous pest, enemy of the soul, that lives in the woods to kidnap children and drive people into raging madness that we unfortunately have dealt with before".

No, this is actually Ahti's VA which is pretty cool. ...of course Ahti _was_ in Control. The Old Gods of Asgard (Poets of the Fall) played Take Control.

I speak the language natively, they absolutely are. "monen nimin" is grammatically incorrect to begin with. "hän tullut on" is obviously there. The final line is a little less obvious, but you'll hear it listening for it.

Yeah but at what second he says these lines ? Can you put a timestamp to those so I can check out? No offense, just trying to see whats wrong with it. Alright just checked the song again. He clearly says whats written on the original post and not the ones you wrote. Yea maybe its ur language but ahti clearly says in the song kuolema first and not kuolevaa for example at 02:22 . The original post is correct.

Amazing song that unfortunately has a very dark and uncomfortable to listen to text as it turns out. I don't understand Finnish so I assumed it was a romantic song of some kind until I read the English lyrics. The song is still amazing even though it's dark, but I prefer songs with lighter themes. Still amazing
