Alan Turing - Celebrating the life of a genius

Saturday 23 June 2012 marks the centenary of the birth of Alan Turing - mathematical genius, hero of the WWII code breakers of Bletchley Park, and father of modern computing.
Alan Turing was a mathematician, cryptographer and pioneer of computer science who possessed one of the greatest brains of the 20th century. His life was one of secret triumphs shadowed by public tragedy.
Presented by Dr James Grime, Enigma Project Officer at the University's Millenium Mathematics Project

Agreed. A true tragedy in the loss of a very special man. Before your comment I never even stopped to think about the loss to math and science, just the sorrow of what he had to go through. Really makes a person wonder what he could have gone on to do. But still he has an amazing legacy left behind. an estimated fourteen million lives were saved by his work. Not to start a religious debate, but I really believe he is receiving his reward in the next world. He certainly earned it

This man deserves a lot more recognition. He should at least be added to the history books. It's so sick to think that other human beings could treat someone like that, who offered so much to this world, to benefit their lives as well as future generations.

Also, to those naysayers who constantly rant about how Turing didn't invent the decoding machine, but Polish scientists did- well, you are partly right. Scientists in Poland DID invent the first decoding machines. However, Turing drastically improved the technology and one thing that Turing can definitely be credited for is the laying the groundwork for modern computers. In fact, he was the first scientist to come up with the concept of Artificial Intelligence-- a concept that was FAR ahead of his time.

On the 5th of February 2019 the British public voted him the greatest icon of the twentieth century. The award was presented to his Niece during a live broadcast on BBC Two. It was the culmination of a month long process that involved experts advocating for seven potential winners, all from different fields but all icons in their own right. The list included Nelson Mandela, Ernest Shackleton, David Bowie, Martin Luther King Jr, Muhammad Ali and Pablo Picasso. As the presentation was made you could see the overwhelming emotion in the faces of his relatives.

I once saw a video where they talked about what we lost when we lost Alan Turing. They wear saying that with just 5 more years of work a mind like his could of advance computer science by at least 50 years. Just think about that for a second. Think about where we could be right now with such an advanced start. Its sad to think that we tossed it all away for something so moronic as hate. You where a true supper hero Alan Turing. I am so sorry that we as a people could not see that until it was too late.

Homosexuals were amongst the minorities persecuted by the Nazis. Such poetic justice that it was a homosexual that helped bring them down by the shear force of his genius. Perhaps a hint of what divinity truly thinks about the fascists and the puritanical and dictatorial and oppressive. For there was no supremacy spared from this genius; whose mortal contemporaries regarded with prejudice, reproach and condescension. (And thank you for this remarkable video!)

Alan Turing certainly put a spanner in the works of the German phrase 'Vorsprung durch Technik' (Being ahead through technology)! He was undoubtedly a genius who was treated atrociously by the British government when he did so much for the British and other European nations in saving lives in WWII. In memory or Alan Turing (in addition to his mathematical and scientific accomplishments) there should be an Alan Turing legal act to ensure equal representation of persons (attaining to the 9 Equality characteristics) in public institutions as long as they are qualified do the job. If the organisation is unable to find equal representation then they would need to demonstrate robust efforts (not reasonable efforts) to overcome the short fall within a specified timeframe. Everywhere in Universities, NHS, Members of Parliament, Central and Local Government many job positions are filled by a majority of white middle class men with few women, BAME, LGBT, and those classified as disabled. A mix of different people with different backgrounds and experience should result in better policy formulation for the benefit of society as a whole.

Fascinating but tragic story. Reminds me a lot of brilliant, but surprisingly unknown scientist from late 1800's, John Worrell Keely. Keely was a lot like Tesla, except specializing in frequency and vibration and not electricity. He was actually well known to both Tesla and Edison and was THE discoverer of all we understand about how frequency and vibration really work. Because he was so far ahead of his time, no one listened to him and he died without ever being recognized for all his marvelous accomplishments in creating pollution free technology by way of sympathetic vibration. When is man ever going to start recognizing these wonderful geniuses instead of ostracizing them? Sad to see the short sightedness of mankind...
