If Shearer had played for a giant like Real Madrid, Milan or Bayern, he would be considered as an even bigger legend. But his loyalty to Newcastle was amazing. I enjoyed watching the Premier League summaries here in Spain mainly because of him and Le Tissier. What an era. What a player.

Strong enough to bully centre backs, fast enough to run away from them, as good as anyone I've seen in the air including Cristiano Ronaldo and a cannon of a shot that was as accurate as it was powerful. Wasn't flamboyant and chose to become a legend at his hometown club instead of chasing trophies which is why he's not as highly regarded as he deserves to be. Best number 9 of the Premier League era.

@TACMAL Rooney was great all around, more versatile that any of these others but maybe not quite as good of a finisher. Harry Kane may be the best English finisher if he keeps it up.

Shearer's one of the best finishers of all time, period.

Best English player I've ever watched, and there were quite a few throughout the last four decades. His pace, power, technique and striking were fantastic and his consistency was unbelievable, he ALWAYS scored, especially in big matches, which is something only greatest players do. Not to mention that 90% of his goals were pure screamers. God, I miss the nineties, Shearer, Batistuta, Bergkamp, Del Piero, Inzaghi, Rivaldo, Cantona, Zidane, Raul, Ronaldo, Fowler, Šuker, Baggio, Klinsmann, Weah ... it seems that every serious club had at least one superstar and that talent was much more evenly distributed than today.

I'm a Newcastle Utd supporter & Alan Shearer was my hero when I was a kid & he's STILL TO THIS DAY the only player to score 260 premiership goals & he's been retired about 15 years he's a LEGEND!!!

This man scored Goals wen defense was full of Tony Adam's, Jaap stams, Martin keolin, mays, palesters.. He was constant each season with all types of injuries.. No one EVER BETTER IN THE AIR THAN HIM.. A TRUE NUMBER 9!

In his earlier career he wasn't known as a target man, but an explosive goal scorer; like an Inzaghi. As he got older he changed the way he played to be the target man who could play the ball forward to other players. He used his strength and power to assist others, like a Drogba. Not many forwards are able to change/adapt their game like he did and remain at the top of the game; most get relegated to a midfield/defensive role.

He is simply the greatest no.9 the English game has ever seen. No flash or gimmicks. Just simple, no-nonsense attacking football with one hell of a powerful right foot. 5:59 That volley from outside the box vs Everton is Shearer at his lethal best.

Exactly. He goes to show that you don't need flash to be a great forward. Brilliant in the box, he could score from almost any position but could also hit powerfully from range. He was a goal scoring machine, few were as consistent and ruthless in the final third.

Very true. He was basically very similar to a 21/22 year old Rooney who had pace and absolute banger of a shot.

Alan shearer is my six year old boys best player that says a lot. As a Newcastle fan watching him every week was like a dream I still remember going down to the stadium when he was announced by keegan get goosebumps just thinking about it. Best striker ever to play I. The premier league and one of the best of all time world wide

It's funny that mojority of fans who started watching football from the last decade doesn't know about him. All they talk about from the epl are the strikers from the last decade and discarding him. Don't get me wrong there were some extraordinary strikers but he is the best striker in the epl. Henry comes very close.
