I absolutely loved Alan's playing and my prized CD I have of his time with the project SFX is absolutely amazing. What a band, what players. Many, many years ago Alan (and Felix Krisch - bass) were working as demonstrators playing for the Fender Roadshow. A local music shop hosted one of their appearances in a pub function room one evening showing off new guitars and amps. I turned up with about eight other people 🤣 and sat 10ft in front of Alan with my beer while he played guitar over backing tracks coming through a small PA system. I'd never heard or seen anything like it in my life and was absolutely blown away. After the demos finished, I sat with Alan and chatted with him, asking the usual nerdy questions about gear and the Strat he was using. At one point he picked up the guitar, handed it to me and invited me to try it. I will never forget what a dog of an instrument it was, really badly set up with the strings miles off the fretboard. I couldn't play a thing on it. When I quizzed him he laughed and just said 'it's better for tone when the action is that high and you just get used to it'. Righto! 🤣🤣🤣

Me too. Thanks for the message, that’s really interesting, I wish I’d seen him play up close and got to chat with him. Fascinated what you were saying about the guitar he was playing - was it one off his, or something off the shelf? Never realised he favoured a high action on his guitars

@@PeteCallard It was a stock model Stratocaster as part of the new range (the Fender CEO was there and he acknowledged they'd suffered a drop in instrument quality as a result of their choice to manufacture in Mexico) Alan made a specific point regarding the very high string action which was a deliberate alteration he makes. I mean it was very high. In more detail he said the strings vibrate more freely and he got a much better tone that way. I get that...and if you could play like Alan on such an instrument then good luck!

It's great to see this often overlooked guitarist getting some well deserved attention. Alan was a great guitarist (and a huge Allan Holdsworth fan). Always remember him using Aria Pro RS espri (I think that was the model). RIP Alan Murphy, a great guitarist.

Completely agree, I always loved his playing and he deserves to be much better known. He was using the Aria on the Go West live at Hammersmith concert, from which I took the SOS lick in my other Alan Murphy video

Alan Murphy had one of the coolest guitar sounds ever, and it was not just his distorted sound. The clean sound on Call Me by Go West is incredible.
