Alan Jackson ~ "Where Were You" (When The World Stopped Turning)

Музыка

Album: "Drive"
Utgitt: 2002
Songwriter: Alan Jackson
From The 50th annual academy of country music awards 2015
"Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)" is a song written by the American singer-songwriter Alan Jackson. It was the lead single from his tenth studio album, Drive (2002), released on Arista Nashville. The song's lyrics center on reactions to the September 11 attacks in the United States, written in the form of questions. Jackson desired to write a song capturing the emotions surrounding the attacks, but found it difficult to do so.
Drive is the tenth studio album by American country music artist Alan Jackson. Released in 2002 on Arista Nashville, the album produced Jackson's highest-debuting single on the Hot Country Songs charts in the number 1 hit, "Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)", a ballad written in response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. "Drive (For Daddy Gene)", "Work in Progress", and "That'd Be Alright" were also released as singles, peaking at number 1, number 3, and number 2, respectively, on the same chart; "Designated Drinker" also reached number 44 without officially being released. In addition, all four released singles cracked the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at numbers 28, 28, 35 and 29, respectively.

Lyrics: Where were you when the world stopped turnin' That September day? Were you in the yard with your wife and children Or workin' on some stage in L.A.? Did you stand there in shock at the sight of that black smoke Risin' against that blue sky? Did you shout out in anger, in fear for your neighbor Or did you just sit down and cry? Did you weep for the children, they lost their dear loved ones Pray for the ones who don't know? Did you rejoice for the people who walked from the rubble And sob for the ones left below? Did you burst out with pride for the red, white, and blue And the heroes who died just doin' what they do? Did you look up to heaven for some kind of answer And look at yourself and what really matters? I'm just a singer of simple songs I'm not a real political man I watch CNN, but I'm not sure I can tell you The diff'rence in Iraq and Iran But I know Jesus and I talk to God And I remember this from when I was young Faith, hope, and love are some good things He gave us And the greatest is love Where were you when the world stopped turnin' That September day? Teachin' a class full of innocent children Or drivin' down some cold interstate? Did you feel guilty 'cause you're a survivor? In a crowded room did you feel alone? Did you call up your mother and tell her you love her? Did you dust off that Bible at home? Did you open your eyes and hope it never happened Close your eyes and not go to sleep? Did you notice the sunset for the first time in ages And speak to some stranger on the street? Did you lay down at night and think of tomorrow Go out and buy you a gun? Did you turn off that violent old movie you're watchin' And turn on I Love Lucy reruns? Did you go to a church and hold hands with some strangers Stand in line to give your own blood? Did you just stay home and cling tight to your family Thank God you had somebody to love? I'm just a singer of simple songs I'm not a real political man I watch CNN, but I'm not sure I can tell you The diff'rence in Iraq and Iran But I know Jesus and I talk to God And I remember this from when I was young Faith, hope, and love are some good things He gave us And the greatest is love I'm just a singer of simple songs I'm not a real political man I watch CNN, but I'm not sure I can tell you The diff'rence in Iraq and Iran But I know Jesus and I talk to God And I remember this from when I was young Faith, hope, and love are some good things He gave us And the greatest is love And the greatest is love And the greatest is love Where were you when the world stopped turnin' On that September day?

I was in grade 6 in a small town school in rural southern Manitoba. (We live about 30 miles north of the border with the state of North Dakota). There was about 40 kids total from grade 1-8 in that school. When we came in from our morning recess, our teacher was listening to radio reports about this and he explained to us what was happening.

Alan Jackson beautifully vocalized what decent people worldwide of every race and religion were feeling, but could not put in to words. Its an emotional song for many, many millions of people and I see it as a very precious gift from a man that helped millions and still to this day helps many people try to comprehend something that really is not understandable. To me, this is the best song of 9/11, it covers all the mixed feelings of this day. It makes me cry everytime. This, I'm sure, is how innocent civilians feel in their war torn countries.

I was 17 and in an artc center in the shower. My name is Emma. I'm using my late mum's account. My mum in the picture was home in East Boston and I called her and cried...I then called my family in NYC and couldn't get a hold of them....My mum and I got a call about 2 weeks later after the towers fell..I lost an aunt on that day...my mum and I cried when our family finally called us...we cried in joy but in pain also....mummy, uncle Larry, aunty Jayne and Lynda I miss you all to death!!!!! To the families & friends who lost loved ones that day my heart goes out to all of you!!!! We will continue to get through this process every year!!!! Never forget 9/11!!!! #ILoveYouAmerica

Pam I hope the grief never leaves us. We cannot afford to let this happen again. I do not think I knew anyone that died that day, but that does not mean i did not share your hurt and pain. I cried many tears for people I did not know, but they were my brothers and sisters. Peace to you. Jim
