I am not sure how Alan was able to get through this song without breaking down. You can hear it in his voice a couple times while he was singing. What an absolutely wonderful tribute that Alan sang this song in memory of George Jones. From one country music icon to another. I lost it when he took his hat off.❤

GJ was one of AJ’s biggest heroes, that had to be a difficult song to sing, but he kept it together & killed it. And then removed his hat, which, as any country boy knows is the ultimate sign of respect. Kudos to Alan on a great performance. Honor, Dignity, Respect- the trifecta.

Yes he was. Alan stood up for GJ a little over 20 years ago at an awards show where they wouldn’t let GJ play his new hit. AJ without asking permission played it then walked off the stage. Such class. Such respect. We don’t see that very often anymore today.

For me, this is one of the greatest musical performances ever - regardless of genre. How Alan stood at this solemn event - the funeral of one of country's legends - and then sang George's greatest hit while his family and friends were weeping just feet away, and held himself together to delivery the emotion the song and setting deserved, is a staggering accomplishment. If you don't cry watching this and don't come away in awe of Alan Jackson, you've got no soul.

His idols were old school country and he loved George Jones… It’s hard to say who the Bestos but if you really dig into Alan Jackson he is a true, tried and true country music legend.

This song is George Jones most memorable song. Alan and George were good friends. George had a new song Choices. Alan had a new song also. The CMAs would not invite George to preform. Alan was preforming his new song. In the middle he stopped and started singing George's song. The crowd erupted!

I don't always love the sound of country music, but I always love the humanity in it. There's not a person on earth that at least one country song doesn't hit them right in the gut despite the sound or tempo, every country song should tell a story that most people can relate to no matter where in the world or class we come from.

Legend has it that when Jones finished recording the spoken-word part, which didn't happen for a couple of months after the rest of the song, he walked out of the recording studio and addressed the recording engineer. saying, "No one's gonna buy that morbid son of a bitch!" The Country Music Association awarded it Song of the Year in both 1980 and 1981.

In the same vein, Merle Haggard sang "Long Black Limousine," in his beautiful voice. "There's a long line of mourners coming down our street; their fancy cars are such a sight to see. They're all of your rich friends that knew you in the city, and now they've finally brought you back to me. Through tears, I watch as you ride by, with a chauffeur at the wheel dressed up so fine.
