Mr Alan Jackson had him do that on purpose in protest. He didn't like the fact that the producers insisted that he sing to a pre-recorded track, rather than live instrumentation. I can't believe you missed this... but look even closer. Alan also took the strings off of his own guitar. There's NO strings on that guitar.

This was done on purpose to prove a point. Story goes That Alan and his band spent many hours practicing a live performance only for Alan to be told at the last minute that a backing track would be used. In his response, Alan chose to bring his band out and told his drummer not to bring sticks in an attempt to make it painfully obvious that the ACM was using a backing track. I respect him for having his bands back like that

@@thomasrobertson9643 And years before Waylon had a hit with Ramlin Man. The award show wanted him to sing just a short part, said they were rushed for time. Waylon said why don't I just dance across the stage and grin. Then you'll have plenty of time. They said don't get smart with us. You need us worse than we need you. Waylon said, I thought about that and decided they were right. So I left. Hats off to both artists, most don't have the nerve to buck the system.

And his drummer has no sticks...how "live" was it?

Heather Taylor It was deliberate. The ACM's told him he had to sing with a track, rather than his band, so he had his band members make it obvious (most notably with his drummer).

Heather Taylor They pre-record everything. The drummer was pissed, so he rebeled! lol

Hurlby Alan Jackson was pissed off that he had to pretend to play instead of live. He told the drummer not to use his sticks. You see Alan Jackson turn and point his guitar at the drummer. At the end he starts to laugh.

Funny. Last video of Alan I watched. I thought wow. He's like the modern day hank Williams. Next video. He's got a hank shirt on.

Actually if you look very closely, not only does the drummer have no sticks, but the guitar player has no strings. I do not know about the fiddle or bass guitar, but I believe In fact that Alan was the only one who even had the potential to make any noise at all as far as I can tell

Dick Clark had been making artists look good on tv for 35 years. Band stand was generally lip sync'd. TV tracks relieve any chance of technical issues. Kudos to Alan Jackson for sticking to his guns but I would never have disrespected Dick Clark like that. And I had the good fortune of benefitting from working with Dick Clark.

Fun fact the drummer has no sticks because the producers asked Alan to play to a backtrack Alan said it was disrespectful to fans expecting live music but he agreed anyway and just before the show he told his drummer to go on stage without sticks therefore exposing the fake production
