Al Lindner's Big Walleye Fall Fishing Day (Braid vs Mono)!

Спорт

Al Lindner shares one of his most memorable walleye fishing days in decades! It happened just the other day here in Minnesota. He was fishing with his friend Tom, and looking back, talks about the importance of having two different snap jigging rod set ups when fishing for walleye. Al caught a 31.5" walleye and they had many other big ones in the mid to high 20 inch range with the rod/reel/line/lure in the video. The rods shown are all 7' 1" Medium Power St Croix Rods (Eyecon and Avid Walleye Series).

Al some of your stories have helped me get through some rough times thanks for that. Remember the good old days trolling criss cross across lakes with the 800 looking for those midlake humps that were not on any map. That old 800 starts a thumping and wham up comes the 5 lb largemouth out of the water with those hooks clanking against that spoonplug out goes the marker and you have a spot that has been untouched full of hogs ! WOW those were the days !

Not that surprising when you think of how a slight haze, full sun, or partly cloudy can make one color or another exceed a different color, or one day to the next in identical conditions can be great with one tactic, and need something different the next. We think we can explain it and we can remember the conditions and be successful replicating, but I suspect we are merely applying anthropomorphism in a manner of what is euphemistic personification. We may never know what a fish thinks about the line; they probably see it, but they cognitively probably do not draw any conclusions from it any more readily than a dog can plan for tomorrow.

I wholeheartedly agree. Especially fishing river systems. I like to bounce my jig off rocks. The more subtle action of the 8lb mono wins every time. I can also free snags easier with mono at least in my experience. Braid has its place but mono is very underrated.

People have found the same thing when striped bass fishing the mono hits different since the fish aren’t able to feel you, soft tip + mono is just a winning combo

Hey Al, just came across this, saw your name and wondered if you invented the Lindy Rig. Because I caught my first and biggest walleye at 28 in., 7 lbs. back in 75' when I was 12 and I never forgot that! My daddy let me skip school but I took it there that day to show all the kids, ha. Googled it and found out your brother was responsible. I remember seeing them at all the sporting stores back in the day. God bless you and your brother and keep on fishin'.

You discovered my secret Al! 😄 Never go out with at least one of each. Quick story - a buddy of mine once came with me on a trip holding a medium power rod with a 6-pound sufix 131 main line to a flouro leader while I'm holding a medium-light with a 15 pound sufix x8 to a mono leader. Same jigs, same size, same colour and I outfished him 3 to 1. Whether it was the rod, the braid or the leader we never found out, but there's certainly something to it! 😊

@@LindnerMedia I think probably many of us ‘could’ notice that, but day-to-day the circumstances are that- like you- one is catching some fish and don’t- as you suggest we do- try different line a/b so we don’t see the difference. Especially if the bite is either very good, or very bad. You had the skills in the boat and a great opportunity to observe and conclude with the right circumstances to make it obvious. Thanks for the vid! Now I know what to do with the ‘extra’ rods. 😊

Nice, to the point video. you don’t necessarily need a real spooled with mono. Just make a longer mono dropper off your braid. U get the best of both. The sensitivity of the braid and the softness of the mono. 🐟😎🐟

Hey Al. I have an off the wall question that I cannot find the answer to so I'm going to the master lol. I caught a walleye last night on my local reservoir and as soon as I got him in the kayak I could smell an awful smell. This is the second time this has happened in the 12 years I've been fishing and I'm wondering why it smells so bad and if it's ok to eat? It's a smell that's hard to describe.....skunky...dirty dirt...almost rubbery kinda smell.

comparing mono to braid with fluoro isnt really fair. Mono floats, Braid floats but is stiffer and doesnt absorb water so it keeps tension better, fluoro sinks so it is for a completely different application. Next time you find yourself in a situation where it seems that mono is working better, try putting a mono leader on your braid instead of fluoro just for testing purposes. Personally I find using braid main line and then switching the leader to mono or fluoro based on application is the best for versatility. Even if youre fishing something that needs "Straight mono" or "Straight fluoro" you can just use a pretty long leader and it will act the same.

  • @daveysyt
