I was site manager of an outdoor venue near St. Louis when Al came there for a show in 1979. Our secretary was in the office with staff coming and going. She was a huge fan of his (as are many, myself included) but she couldn't get away to go watch even one song. After the show I explained how much he meant to her and how her lyrics inspired her. I told him she could not come down and asked if he would go visit her. He rode with me on the golf cart 1/2 a mile to the office. Signed a picture which I took in and handed her and she was so thrilled and in tears. Then he knocked on the door and came in. She lost it. He said hello, shook her had, kissed her cheek as he was leaving and even sang a couple of verses to her. That is the kind of man Al Jarreau was. Renita Fowler, I hope you are still with us and well.

as a parent I can relate to such moments
In the late 80's, my father use to play this every single morning for me while he drove me to school. Then we listened to a mixture of Al Jarreau and Anita Baker. I was infatuated with their voices and their scatting talents. God, I wish Black music with a soul and positivity still existed today. But I'll always have the 80's

+cattybound2011 Dear Catty, perhaps they didn't dislike this (beautiful) song per se, may be some of those dislikes come from very far back away in time, when that song was playing, and they had some serious and bitter moments in their existences, one never knows. I can say this because I was one of those tormented souls in those distant times and I used to relate it to many hardships I was going through, the difference is I overcame it, and today I love it.

The high note on “the face of God” was outside Al Jarreau’s range so he came in on a separate day just to sing that single line. He did 3 takes and the take on the record is number 2 and he nailed it.

This song was to calm the patients down from the horror that was about to occur with the dental instruments :)

Dave L I know it places you in such a, happy positive mindset!!!!!!!!!!
My taste in music is mostly influenced by my father and everything i went thru as a kid, the tv show, the cartoons, the video games, etc. I’m born in 99, I regretted that only today as a 25 yo I discovered this beautiful piece. Such a vibe, brought a lil tears to my eyes. RIP ❤
I play this song in my head every time I get on the plane. I close my eyes as the plane goes down the runway, I envision myself touching the face of GOD in the sky. always a window seat.🙂🙂
I love to wake up on a beautiful sunny, summer morning to this song. They don't make music like this anymore.

This song was played during my wedding. It's the only music I remember from that incredible day.
wow, it's 85 and I'm on the school bus, or riding around town with my moms running errands, just a little dude. Warm and fuzzy amidst some hard times
Occasionally you encounter a person that is doing with their life exactly what was intended. Al was such a person. I wept like a child when i heard he died.😢

Hard to believe this melodious tune entered the musical scene 4 decades ago! It still has appeal!
RWG Al! Your gifts live on!
I listen to this with tears welling up in my eyes. I wish we could go back to the 70s and 80s when we'd hear Al on the radio all the time!

Al Jarreau was an angel incarnate. God bless his soul! This song may have saved my life at a a critical time when I had lost everything and had no hope left. I am a man but am weeping now listening to this and watching the video for the first time. It's almost too much. God bless this wonderful man. God bless all who have faith and see the beauty in life.

I remember this song when I was kid. My father used to play this song every morning in his car while taking me to school. I lost my father 4 years ago. I think about him every time I hear this song. I miss my father.
