Al Horford: The Joel Embiid Stopper
Спорт
Even at the age of 36, Al Horford continued to look like the ultimate Joel Embiid stopper in the 2023 Playoff Matchup between the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers.

Consistently, not even just a few times. He did well in 2018 and 2022. He was doing well in 2019 (see Game 1 e.g.), but Kyrie started sabotaging and decided he wanted to defend Giannis for some reason even though they won Game 1 with Horford playing excellent defense.

Horford has done an amazing job on Giannis and Embiid. If he successfully takes on Jokic, that has to be one of the best big man defensive tenures in the playoffs for matching up with the top 3 MVP candidates in the last few years. Unbelievable that Horford is so old!

I didn't realize this until now. But at 6'9", Hordford is basically the C's version of Bam and Draymond. Undersized defensive anchors with specialized skills that fit their team. Draymond with his playmaking, Bam with his athleticism and ball-handling, and Horford with his shooting.

The most versatile defending center ever!
I remember the couple seasons he was gone from the Boston roster. It affected the flow of the game so much
People been writing Al off since 2019
Marc Gasol was a huge part of that Raptors run for this exact reason. He was a big, strong centre that could handle Embiid down low and it helped significantly.

That's exactly why Horford is in Boston. After all these years, he is extremely well trained to defend Embiid and Giannis.
Would love to see horford a patience and defensive iq rub off on rob williams a little more he’s such a freak athlete if he can capture some of horford a poise we could see an elite defender
Its not all Joel Embiids fault. Some of the initial plays didn't go because nobody was moving around on the floor. Some of the 76ers just stood there. What they should have done was to get Embiid out of that situation most of the times and shoot. At some points Embiid was 3v1ing in the paint. That won't work. Yes, Al Horford defense is really good but Embiid is usually better. He wasn't playing like his self in the playoffs. He needs to improve on whatever he was doing or change it up. And for people saying that he doesn't deserve his MVP, he does. He just didn't play good in the finals. He needs improvement. I know that this is his 5th-6th time in the playoffs but he still has time to get past the second round and maybe win a chip. Give the man a break, his coach is ass. As a 76ers fan, what I think they need 1 more year of this and improve. If that doesn't work, They need to rebuild and get rid of some guys. Give the man a break.

The OG double big era!
I like Al Horford for his dedication to God.
Al all around has been a perfect re-addition to the Celtics. As a vet he brings needed leadership to Boston who has a younger head coach, while simultaneously controlling the defense which is the engine of this high caliber team. Ultimately I think the key to stopping embiid was the joint effort of Horford and Rob Williams III. With this duo on the court embiid had little to no chance of driving to the basket and with his terrible passing it allowed Rob to float off his man to establish his place as the back line of Al. Together they are giant slayers and will be needed together to stop Jokic and other bigs in the next season or two.
it’s gonna be wild when embiid retires before horford does. he’s literally going to stifle their entire championship window
Can someone show Keegan Murray this video? Please and thank you

AD has the higher ceiling imo but i don’t think you’re gonna get that ceiling very often, AD has dominant performances but he is also injury prone and inconsistent I’d take embiid tbh, even though a lot of what I said about AD also applies to Embiid, i just feel AD does it at greater magnitude
This why embiid aint care like that he knew he couldn’t beat his Daddy Horford

Yep never seen a more lopsided superstar vs defender matchup. Raptors Gasol was the ultimate Embiid stopper. In the three Embiid vs raptors Gasol games in the reg season, Embiid put up 10, 5 and 0 points. And the only points he could get is when the sixers were able to switch Gasol off of him. He legit couldn't score on him. And the crazy thing is Embiid averaged 27ppg in those seasons. Even the total career embiid stats vs gasol is 12ppg on 32% FG.

This video really hurts me cause I know how great Embiid can be. Celtics are probably his biggest challenge to getting a ring. I will never accept Jokic is better. I think he had more favorable playoff matchups than Embiid. They played the Wolves, Suns, Lakers and nobody was surprised when he bullied Bam.
It is not that Horford know how to swipe on Embid, it is playoffs so Embid is not getting calls he would in regular season.
Every team needs a player like Horford. Very steady, reliable and a great leader. Boarderline Hall of Famer.
Embiid averages 26 13 and 4 vs Al horford. And those stats are really againt 3 defenders cuz horford always has help or someone shading just in case. But yeah, enjoy ur video

I judge peoples basketball knowledge based off their opinions on Al Horford
Not as related but this breakdown makes Lebron's dismantling of Celtics when he was in the east even more significant. The reason AL cannot stop lebron like this despite being younger, is because Lebron isnt just a physical specimen - he is a playmaking machine in those Celtics beatdown. This Celtics defense was able to stop Durant, Giannis, and Embid because they are close to one dimensional scorers.
Can someone PLEASE make a highlight reel of Marc gasol and Al Horford shutting down fraud embiid :)

The Playoffs: The Joel Embiid Stopper
Since Marc Gasol is out of the NBA now, I guess Embiid needs a new father. Al Horford would be a wonderful replacement for Marc. If you need proof, look no further than Nov 25th 2019 vs the Raptors. 0 points 32mins played 0/11fg
@panner11
Жыл бұрын
Or even Embiid's career numbers vs Marc Gasol. Only 12ppg on 32% FG. And this includes the one game against old Lakers Gasol where Embiid had 28 but Gasol barely had minutes. Raptors Marc Gasol was the worst for Embiid though. Embiid three reg season games against raptors Gasol, Embiid had 0, 5, and 10 points. And the scary thing is most of those points are from switching Gasol off of him. When Embiid is actually guarded by Gasol, he would straight up never score.
This is completely bogus. Where is all this stuff at in the playoffs? He's none of this in the playoffs.
Al Horford rarely makes the wrong play on or off the ball. It’s too bad he went to Philly for a couple years…always thought he should’ve stayed He plays so well under the Celtics system and hope he retires a Celtic!
ONLY Embiid could lose in the Playoffs to the Hawks,.what a POS mvPOS~
Well its a given that Al horford can easily shutdown joel because hes joel daddy.
Good stuff. Here I am thinking Horford should retire. Keep up the good work. Definitely helps when it comes to the finer points of the game
JoeCry Embiid : " i don't know what more I need to do to get the MVP". Well maybe not get punked by a 37yo Al Horford and get more than 15pts in a game 7 . Jokic got robbed of a historical achievement by race card narrative and pity for Embiid
John 3:16 For God so loved the world he gave his one and only beggotten son so that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life. My friend if you are reading this its a sign from God. Repent of your sins and turn to the lord Jesus Christ who loves you so much and who wants to save you from Eternal Damnation.
He's been known to lock up giannis and embid. What Al did to him the series was pretty much a perfect as you can get for guarding an mvp caliber player. He routinely makes him quit by the fourth quarter of most games. Which is embarrassing seeing how he's much older than him. But this is been a flaw with Harding and and be for quite a while now. They're known for coming up small and big games and when you constantly harass them and aggravate them they start to take their foot off the gas and concede.
5 years of Embid cringe play
I wouldn't call Al Horford a Joel Embiid stopper when he needed 2-3 teammates every possession. Just chalk it up to an injured MVP struggling who missed shots he typically would make
I Love AL if he wins champ with the C's we need to retire his jersey here
Look up the stats at the end of these games. If a dude drops 30 on u am i supposed to declare u the "stopper" cuz u got him good a time or 2? Watch the game they're bringing 2 to 3 guys on embiid it really isn't horford. Game seven embiid just sucked i could have guarded him that game
With all due respect to Al, but embiid is way overrated.
