Одно из лучших произведений! Почему в 1985 году у Шнитке выходили такие потрясающие произведения, как Концерт для виолончели с оркестром номер 1, концерт для альта с оркестром, вот этот хор и еще что-то было.

Once Valery Polyansky in his interview said, that there are many compositions not deserving to be forgotten. I believe this is one of its and he together with chamber choir of the ministry of the USSR made it unforgettable.

From allmusic.com Composed during the years 1984 and 1985, this work for voices has a text based on a tenth-century Armenian devotional manuscript by the poet Gregory of Narek. As a German Jewish composer living in Russia, Schnittke displays his deep understanding of the roots of the music of the Russian Orthodox church. In the first movement, mysterious chords in steady pacing alternate between rich polytonality and archaic Gesualdo-like modulations, and between intense prayerfulness and sudden exclamation -- "O Master of all living...God creating all out of nothing...Invisible, eternal, boundless, Terrifying and beneficent...it is You who give us blessing, You are noon without nightfall, light without shadow...." The second movement ("I, an expert in human passions") alternates between a sinuous twisting around a minor second (expanding to Middle Eastern modes and wider chromaticism) and a return to warm, lyrical harmonies. It concludes with a slow diminishing of the minor second figure into silence. The third movement ("God grant deliverance from sin") is built from a highly chromatic melody over a pulsing, single note counterline. From this texture emerge, further independent chromatic lines that gradually make the harmony more complex. The overall effect is a mournful, hallucinatory image...a prayer in the desert of the soul -- "And if my tearful prayer falls, like rain, washing away sins, may this water of life also wash me, your base slave." The fourth movement ("Complete this work") is of a peaceful, hopeful texture, and again recalls the underlying history of Russian Orthodox church music but as reinterpreted in the more Romantic light of Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky. Lush and beautiful clusters conclude the work.
