Đakovo | Slavonia | Continental Croatia | A Piece of Croatian Paradise
In the heart of the historical province of Slavonia, at 111 meters above sea level, on the Đakovo plateau, Đakovo - the heart of Slavonia - is located. Arriving in Đakovo, the first thing you will see is the brick embers of two towers and the dome of the most beautiful cathedral in the area from Venice to Istanbul.
Đakovo was first mentioned in 1239 in a document of the Croatian-Hungarian Carniolan Bela IV, but research has shown that it was inhabited in the Late Stone Age and in Roman times.
Today's Cathedral-Basilica of St. Petra was built in the neo-Gothic-Romanesque style. Bishop Strossmayer began building it in 1866 and the construction lasted a full 16 years (until 1882). It is interesting that 7,000,000 pieces of bricks baked in Đakovo were used for the construction of the cathedral, and the stone was delivered from Istria, Hungary, Austria, Italy and France. The cathedral is decorated with 7 altars, 43 frescoes, 31 statues and 32 reliefs, and an organ with 73 registers, three manuals and 5,486 flutes. With these specifics, it is unquestionable that the Cathedral of St. Petra one of the most beautiful in Europe.
The Đakovo stud farm was founded back in 1506, it is one of the oldest stud farms in Europe with a long tradition of horse breeding in the area. Horses of the Lipizzaner breed on the Stable began to be bred in the early 19th century. Today, as the State Stud Farm Đakovo and Lipik, it uses two locations for breeding and selection of horses - Pastuharna and Ivandvor, in the immediate vicinity of the city. In addition to breeding and selection, the quality of dressage riding is confirmed by taking notable places in equestrian competitions and numerous performances. So did Queen Elizabeth II of England. delighted with the performance of the Đakovo Lipizzaners at the opening of the 1972 Olympic Games, she visited the Stables and rode through the Đakovo famous and widely known four-carriage of the Đakovo Stables.
A special gastronomic tradition is nurtured throughout Slavonia, as well as in Đakovo. For many years, the inhabitants of this area have preserved the traditional dishes that they are still proud of today. Kulin, ham, sausage, bacon and greaves is an indispensable gastronomic pleasure. The traditional way of producing these delicacies contributes to their originality and Đakovo stands out as a special gastronomic gem.
Gingerbreads, walnuts and cakes and pickles are part of traditional Slavonian cakes that leave a mark on every guest with their aromas and flavors. True to the traditional offer, event activities inevitably serve antique dishes.
Đakovo wines are proud of a tradition of more than two thousand years. The beginnings of the wine and viticulture tradition of the Đakovo-Osijek Archdiocese date back to the pre-Turkish era. Over the centuries, the wines of the Đakovo vineyards have remained top quality, which is confirmed by numerous awards at world exhibitions.
Đakovo region is adorned with natural oases of peace and quiet, there are several larger and smaller lakes suitable for fishing, walking or cycling. Excursions, fishermen, hunters and all nature lovers here are given the pleasure of lakes and forests. Of the lakes, it is worth mentioning Lake Borovik, a place for fishing and camping, Lake Jošava, and Lake Bajer, which are in the immediate vicinity of the city.
