Akita puppies are arguably the cutest little monsters on the planet. But finding an Akita puppy isn't as simple as going on to google and searching for "Akita breeders near me" or "Akita puppies near me."
The truth is, Akita Breeders vary widely in terms of health, quality and ethics, and finding an reputable breeder is extremely important because not only will have have a happier, healthier dog, but you'll also be helping to maintain the purity and quality of the breed itself.

Been watching your channel for a while before I got my Grizzly. He isn’t my first puppy but my first AKITA puppy. And let me say it’s a huge difference between every other dog I’ve owned which were American Pitt bulls, Dobermans, German Shepherds and Rotts. My Akita is like my own personal guard 🤣 he’s studies me like no other.. He stubborn as heck but listens after the 2nd or 3rd time 😆 but by far the most intelligent dog I’ve ever had. And he’s only 7 months old.. Definitely not for beginners, These dogs hate hard or physical types of discipline.. They are very sensitive. positive energy, encouragement and love is the only way to win an Akitas devotion 💯 and thank you for all your informational videos about this particular breed it helped me in many ways!!

Both strains of "Akita" are originally from japan. Hellen Keller brought over two examples of the akita that were gifts from prefecture. I have a female with papers and she is very protective. Its not for everybody. They push their owners.

Tony, I’m absolutely loving your videos about American Akitas -it’s a bit hard to find great and updated content about them. I’ve been wanting an Akita for a few years and made a mistake to send $500 to a BYB and have realized there’s a lot of smoke and mirrors -and choosing to be careful. For example, one breeder that I was going to move forward with from Wisconsin is registered with the Akita Club of America, but has several bad reviews with proof of emails and other paper trails shown by real people. Anyhow, I know we will find the right Akita, at the right time, from a reputable breeder. Keep making great videos! P.S. We want to see more of Haga :)

  • @TheAkitaLife

Hey Tommy, thanks so much for the comment. It's true information about Akitas is pretty hard to come by, and it seems a lot of the content here on KZread is just re-hashed second hand information. We can't leave the house with Haga without someone asking us what kind of dog he is, and many people have never even heard of Akitas. I actually think I know which breeder you're speaking about, as I looked at purchasing a puppy from them, but backed out for the same reason. The Akita Club of America list is a good start, but it's unfortunately not a sure fire bet, which is why I made this video. On the flip side there are some great breeders who just don't bother to register with ACA. What part of the country are you located in? And I'll be sure to include more Haga footage moving forward!

Great video with really good info and advice! I just felt compelled to comment that not all "backyard breeders" are bad breeders. I'm not a breeder so I don't have a dog in this fight so to speak, but I have owned Akitas and Catahoula Leopard Dogs for the last 27 years. All our dogs have come from what would be described as backyard breeders. All our dogs required puppy applications, and came vet checked with health guarantees, and hips certified. Each one of our breeders also has a puppy return policy if ever a pup required re-homing for any reason. There are great small breeders out there. They are proud of their dogs and will happily show you both parents, and their facility. Even if it is literally just their home. Here in Canada their prices for a registered and health checked puppy will often be more reasonable then some grifter on Kijiji who is just turning out litter after litter to make a quick buck. Do your due diligence when shopping for a puppy. Good breeders may make you jump through hoops before they sell you a pup but they will be happy to answer every question you have. If they aren't willing to do that, move on.

  • @TheAkitaLife

°The term "backyard breeder" isn't meant to be taken literally. Almost all ethical breeders in the states breed dogs out if their personal residence. It's a slang term to describe breeders who do the bare minimum to ensure the safety and health of their dogs, I'm glad you've had good experiences with your breeders!

Great choice! They are an amazing breed. I use to breed American Akitas but stopped breeding so to our pounds being full of dogs. People just don’t know what they have and how to take care of a dog regardless of the breed. People need to really think before buying or adopting a dog Breed before having to get one and giving up on them and dropping them off at the pound.

Hi there, thank you for your channel, it’s very helpful for me a first time owner. Our Akita is about 5-6 yrs old now, and still in puppy mode. I like to think it’s because he’s so loved and happy. Unfortunately he was not properly trained as a puppy So I need some tips on getting him to not have accidents in the house. It’s gotten better as he’s gotten older, but personally I tend to think he’s stubborn and does it on purpose. I will catch him and say “No” but he’ll look at me and do it anyway. Please help.

  • @TheAkitaLife

    @TheAkitaLife

    2 жыл бұрын

Yes, many breeders will not sell to someone who doesn't have a fenced in yard. Not all, but most. This is personally where I disagree with many breeders. If you are making time to thoroughly exercise your Akita (2-4 walks per day), then I don't find a yard necessary. Helpful, sure, but not necessary.

I was unfamiliar with backyard breeders and we ended up getting our siberian husky from one....when we got there we were horrified. We wanted to buy the remaining three puppies just to save them. Our girl came with no papers and e-coli. I now know better and would have reported the conditions to the county. So, a year later we get our Akita and he is AKC registered and from a good breeder in the Appalachians.

You have some beautiful dogs. I really like Akitas. Some of the information you are disseminating about good vs bad breeders is not true. Good breeders do ask for a deposit on an upcoming litter. I watch Rachel from Senza Tempo Cane Corso who has a huge following on You Tube and produces excellent dogs and she does ask for a deposit. She also requires an application but not as extensive as the breeder you got your dog from. Another excellent breeder is Cape Fear Cane Corso who has done business with Senza and she also requires a deposit. Watchman German Shepard produces top of the line German Shepard and he requires a deposit on upcoming litters. While all these breeders I have mentioned require you to fill out an application it isn't like your applying for a government job. They ask very basic but important information. And the cost of the puppy is based on first, second or third pick. Also whether you are looking for a companion vs a show dog. Most breeders also will not allow breeding rights. They will not allow you to give away the dog or place it in a shelter for any reason. Reputable breeders are willing to take back the dog if you can't keep it. Most reputable breeders require you to feed raw or a brand of food that they want for their dogs to eat. Senza requires you feed Farmina. Cape Fear requires raw food and supplements. They also provide an extensive health guarantee and will extend the guarantee as long as you feed the food they recommend. I have never heard of a good breeder flying all over the country to prospective buyers homes unless they are checking on co-owned dogs in which the person has breeding rights and most buyers don't get breeding rights. You also have to take the puppy to the vet within 72 hours of purchase. So all breeders have different expectations but it does not necessitate a red flag because another breeder does not do what your breeder does. This YT video seemed more like an infomercial for your breeder than helping buyers finding a quality breeder. Breeding of dogs is a business so money is important to every breeder including the breeder you got your puppy from.

Thanks for the comment but: 1. I never said that good breeders don't take a deposit. I said that bad breeders take a deposit without asking you to fill out an application and that good breeders refer you to another breeder if they don't have any planned breedings. 2. I never said that a breeder would fly all over the country. I said that a breeder would prefer to see your residence and if they can't see it in person (as in you're not local) they ask for pictures. We filled out a dozen puppy applications and most of them we had to sign off on someone coming to our home if the breeder so choosed. 3. I only mention my breeder one time at the very end of a 12 minute video after mentioning people source a breeder from Akitaclub.org so I'm not really sure how this is an "infommercial" for the breeder we got our dog from. Please listen more carefully before commenting.

Is American Akita more aggressive and hyperactive than Japanese Akita? I used to have husky for many many years and switched to Japanese akita as I returned home in Tokyo. Despite the size difference of those two dogs, I find Jpn akita to be much easier dog to train. Also akita’s temperament seems much more stable and calm than Husky or even other local dogs like Shiba. American Akita’s looks more like mustiff than ours how different are they?

Got my Akita from diff breeders. There a great breeder name Royal Akitas. That have many top show dogs and the temperament is spot on. Pls only get from top breeders. There’s like 8 to 10 breeders in America. Trust me you want to get a well balanced dog.

@@ogdondadda what’s crazy is I have bought dogs from both. One is called Royal Akitas and the other is Royalty Akitas. Both are really good breeders. But with out a doubt Royalty Akitas is on another level. They are I believe mid west. They are a husband and wife who actually flew with my dog out here to California where I live. And Royal Akitas is up north of me near San Francisco. We will be getting more dogs from Royality Akitas as our female is getting older. We purchased a huge male from them 3 years ago. Who is the sweetest male I have ever met. Loves all the children that come over with my son and daughter. Good luck.

Xtreme Akitas - absolutely the best Akita breeders, because we're local, they offer complete follow up services and they will buy back any Akita if you find that you're not suited for the best dog in the world.

The buyback is a great policy. Unfortunately probably gets used too, as some people simply don't do their homework on these dogs before buying.

They can be. If you don't have a fenced in yard you'll need to walk them quite a bit, and if there are a lot of other dogs around you'll need to work a lot on training for them to tolerate the other dogs.
