Akira Toriyama's "Last Hurrah"
Ойын-сауық
Sand Land the manga, Sand Land the Movie, and Sand Land the Anime! All in one video!! Sand Land has a lot more under its surface that I could have possibly expected. And though its popularity is not that of Dragon Ball's, I'm hoping the new movie and anime will help propel this all time Toriyama classic to new heights!

Love how Toriyama life was basically "Hey I'm writing a simple but rich comedy story with simple but impactful plot points, hope u like it" Executives "this is amazing............... But what if we ...." "Oh no, here we go again" "We will pay you tho" "Aight I guess, here's my notes"

When i first read this manga, i feel this calming sensation of comfort as the story went on, it's a short light experience, but you get so much from it, by the end you end up charmed by every character, im glad to hear the anime continued the story, and the game is expanding it. Rest in Peace Toriyama Sensei, your one last hurrah hit the mark, wish you could be here to see it being celebrated.
The impact Toriyama left on the world is something special
“Optimism”…I really like how you use that word.
I genuinely love Sandland, just finished watch the anime series twice, the second was yesterday with my sister, all 13 episodes. I also seen a full playthrough of the video game. I love it as well, a little more than the anime series cause it has more characters, story, lore, expansions etc.., I honestly can't wait for them to adapt Akira Toriyama Sensei other hidden gems of mangas. May he rest in the otherworld with King Kai and Grandpa Gohan. Thank you for everything Toriyama Sensei, your passionate creations will forever live within our hearts and souls. 🖤🐉🤍
I feel bad for Toriyama, the man was type cast into the niche dragon ball holds. He tries to make this small, down to earth story but the adaptations try to make it more like Dragon Ball. I guess it's one of the downsides of being such a legend

Forest Land being a video game was no accident given the ACTUAL video game attached to it. Heck, Ann is even introduced pretty early on in said game as your game's mechanic, as a means to upgrade your vehicles. Forest Land itself is just ONE GIANT AD for the Sand Land video game on the grand scheme of things akin to Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans' OVA.
Basically, What if Dragon Ball had no space aliens visiting Earth and we lingered in the desert bandit arc?
It’s no coincidence that an artist almost never considers his most popular work, his best work. I’m not sure if it lines up but I wouldn’t be surprised if Sandland inspired Oda to make the ‘Alabasta’ arc.

One last Hurrah… Ty Toryiama 🐉
One of the things I love about the added material in the anime/game is that despite looking and most of the time acting like an old man, Thief is actually only "a bit older" than Beelzebub, which is such a great tidbit of world building through implication. Also, the use of Sandstorm as transition music to talking about the movie was incredible.
Sand Land is perhaps Toriyama's most underrated masterpiece. I had only heard of this via Wikipedia, and I'm honestly blown away by how well crafted, creative, and hilarious this story is despite its short length and simplicity.
YESSSS IVE BEEN WAITING FOR U TO TALK ABOUT SANDLAND!!!! I absolutely loved the SandLand series. It was like a mix between Dragonball and Metal Gear (Rao reminds me of Old Snake from MGS4), two of my interests ive always enjoyed. It was so classically a Toriyama story, with the tech, the humour, the worldbuilding. Watching it felt like such a breath of fresh air and the characters are so endearing and lovable, even the new ones like Muniel and Ann. I havent played the game, but its so cool that after years it got this level of expansion into its story and world. Personally, I would love to see perhaps another arc of the anime, but even if it didnt, I was happy to see the vibes of Original Dragonball with a new story, and felt emotional at its ending, knowing it was one of the last things Toriyama worked on. I can only hope that the fandom itself grows, we need more fanart and fanfic writers!
I watched all of Sand Land and it was great! I love how they expanded what was in the manga, as well as the following arc that’s exclusive to the anime
Man rip what a legend he gave us more than an amazing series but a great community and group of fans thank you Toriyama
Love your work mark! Thanks For this ❤❤❤❤
Your intros always get me so hyped. almost stood up out of my chair
What amazes me about the great story was it almost wasn’t because he couldn’t find a tank design he liked. God I miss Toriyama
I would say akira toriyama had one of the best "sendoffs" a person can have. He made sandland, worked on Dragonball Daima (going back to dragonball's roots), and worked on Dragonball sparking zero.
Thank you Akira Toriyama for your stories. They’ve inspired me so much I’m planning my own series with action like DBZ. And I’ll get the Sand Land game. Your Legend will never die.
The frame of Anakin after the sand joke gave me a good chuckle. Great video as always Mark!
I did find it strange how the subtitles described Beelzebub as a "Fiend", but the English Dub mostly refers to him correctly as a Demon. Why they changed it only to change it back again is strange indeed!
Glad there was just a shot of Go! Go! Ackman in there. Now there's a Toriyama series I'd wanna see covered on here. Also, this convinced me to check out Sand Land. It actually looks really interesting. Thank you.

I love you for that Bravely Default battle theme in the background of Forest Land review.
Just as I was looking forward to some Dragon Ball, Mark hits me with this. So, I just went along and read Sand Land, ngl, super fun read, it reminded me of the first arc in Dragon Ball, a lot of characters gave a similar vibe, like the Swimmers felt like a mixture of Yamcha & Puar and the Pilaf gang, I recommend others to give it a go if they haven't. In the meantime I'll be checking out the movie and series. Thanks for the video Mark, it was a nice insight into Toriyama's final work, I'm so glad to have been able to experience his storytelling, and can't wait for Dragon Ball Daima, it'll really feel like a nice send off for him. Thank you Akira Toriyama.
This oponed a wound that had barely healed. I feel nostalgia for something i have never seen. Thank you.
I have to admit, you really surprised me with this one song from nadia and the secret of blue water. It's one of my favorite Anime and you got me there

Commander Rao was so compelling. I'm glad you went out of your way to dissect the story and the idea that he's the center of it all. I was engrossed because of him throughout the entire first arc of the anime. it was amazing. felt like the Red RIbbon army, but with way more character and a better focus. I was actually able to take it seriously. thanks for the review!

Kudos for the Gainex Nadia music, always a tune I never tire of.
I beat the video game recently and I really enjoyed it, if you're a fan of Akira toriyama's work I recommend giving it a playthrough. The vehicles you get to drive are fun and I enjoyed the Forrest land section, it was done well with more time to flesh out commander bred, plus it's satisfying getting to lay the smackdown on Muniel
I’ve only watched the anime series of this, and I absolutely loved it. Trying to get my friends who enjoy DB to watch it, I’ve struggled to explain why I like it so much. I’ve compared it to the first arc of Dragon Ball, with the small cast of characters, road trip format, lower stakes, and focus on comedy. I think ultimately Sand Land is basically everything I love about Toriyama’s art and writing style distilled into one small story.
Having such a blast with the game!
I have a ton of hours in the game and I love it. It's not perfect but lots of different vehicles gives the game variety and it's cool just hanging out in a toriyama world...
It would be cool if u did vids on his other one-shots & manga like Kintoki or Cowa. As for me I've only experienced the anime tv series but I loved it the entire way through. Both the Op & ED R absolute bangers & I'll never skip any chance to listen when they pop up. When it comes to anime/manga. I'm glad Tori's legacy isn't limited to DB or even Dr. Slump
I've never read sand land, but when I heard that I'd be able to watch the series I was ready to hop on that train, I'm glad I did. It was incredible, it makes me want to go back and read it. I really liked the movie and the anime, the tank action scenes were probably my favorite, the swimmers are funny and I like the characters as a whole. Their dynamics are cool, overall a solid translated media in my eyes.
I do appreciate the sprinkling of Sandstorm remixes throughout the video.
I was so happy that it finally got an animated adaptation and I'm glad they also made it the first arc of the series because the movie had a limited release and otherwise I would've have to wait longer to watch it. I loved it (the first arc) and the stuff they added worked, I'm not that much of a fan of the 2D-3D style but it looked good enough, now, I did read Toriyama wasn't 100% involved in the story for the second part (except for the character designs for the angel and the girl), and it shows, still, it was a fun ride and I liked how it ended (and Muniel is an awesome funny antagonist), it was a very nice homage to the legend (R.I.P.)
I read the manga around a year ago and just finished the game. I haven't watched the anime just yet, but if it's exactly how you're describing it, the game definitely does a much better job with the Forest Land stuff. Being one complete experience without the baggage of adding on to a movie or fitting into a handful of episodes really helps the pacing. Ann acts as a fourth member of the group throughout the game, there's an epilogue to the Sand Land portion that doubles as a prologue for the Forest Land portion, there's a ton of dialogue that fleshes out the new characters, their goals, and their relationships with others, and the extra time allowed by the gameplay allows the escalation in threat to feel much more natural.
I remember when Shonen Jump was finally being brought stateside with monthly Volumes, that was my introduction to One Piece and Naruto. Sand Land was added when DBZ was replaced and I was stoked to see new manga from Toriyama, I had to have reread those volumes a dozen times over the years, I kept telling my friends that this story was going to be big someday, only took 20 years to finally be right, lol

Great Video! Also good observation with the "Forest Land Story is basically a Videogame" because it literally is. The Sand Land Videogame adaptation is the core and complete Forest Land Story, while the Anime was an adaptation of that very same Video Game Sequel Story, as stated by Series Director Toshihisa Yokoshima in an interview at anime.eiga. They did their best, to adapt the story in some compromised form, even some main Antagonists from the Forest Land Army were cut. But i think, they have done a good job adapting the story.

I swear whenever I watch any mark video I do my English assignments way better, the way he be talking in these vids is like a dam poet
I saw sandland in shonen jump when I was a kid and since it was featured, I thought it would be a full series. I was surprised to see it in a bookstore (either barns and noble or half price books), not having volume numbers. It was just one volume. It made me more curious about it and just being one volume for $7.99 made it seem like such an easy read for a kid. I read it in like one afternoon and I felt like it was just a very complete story. For a guy that made a huge, sprawling series like dragon ball, sandland is just such an incredibly concise story but it also gives you the space to get into the world the way dragon ball does. That’s an incredible feat for such a small story. I love that beelzebub is this immature demon kid that just likes being bad. He feels like a very toriyama-esque character, he doesn’t try to be a good guy or even a particularly good person but is still the hero of the story. He’s very different than goku but feels a bit more like a realistic person. It’s a very simple story that captures all of the essential elements of a great story. In my opinion, that’s what toriyama does best. It was unique as a kid because it wasn’t among the pantheon of popular media that we see everyday, (despite the author having made one of the biggest media franchises of all time). It was one of the first times I felt like I was experiencing something very niche, that not many other people knew about. It was only because I saw toriyama’s name attached to the series, I gave it a chance. Especially because dragon ball was the biggest thing at the time. That’s one of the things I hate about popular culture dominating what is readily available to us nowadays. We miss out on little gems like sandland.
Hey Mark!!! I'm so glad that yoy got a chance to both read and watch the story that is: Sandland! Speaking of Dragon quest that you mentioned a some point in the video, I qm curious as to what your thoughts are with the Dragon Quest anime, that is if you had the opportunity to watch and read the manga association with the story.
glad to see translations are still in the 90s
Mark, I know it’s not shonen, but you’ve made videos on some darker material before and I’d love to see you cover Monster. I got into it at the end of last year and it just captured me in a way that shonen hasn’t for a while. I was hooked from the first episode I watched and your videos are of such a high quality I’d die to see a video from you on the manga.
Feels like a dragonball he really wanted to make, not just a somewhat silly with a core strength series. Something that has a defined start and end. A true proper thing made by himself alone with no oversight after so long. Feels like everything he liked put together properly.
great video
Hotel Dusk music in the video?! Nice!
I really enjoyed the show, never read the manga but I think this work has potential to inspire other artists to slow down and not worry so much about how flashy their stories can get..
Ireally appreciate the shoutout to the anime adaptation of Rorouni Kenshin. I feel like not many people are willing to mention it these days due to what happened with the original author, but the animation teams who worked on it did an amazing job. It's in my top 10 anime shows.
13:59 Rao’s voice actor didn’t just voice Hit in DBS, his main claim to fame was being the voice of Cid Highwind from Final Fantasy 7. He also voices Makoto Date from the Yakuza series, which is how I discovered him and started keeping track of his roles
Thank you Toriyama-sensei
