However, both are the most popular characters in the JP community. The enhanced versions give them the proper links; Aigis receives the Aeon link in January before the final battle, Akechi have a remade link based on the unused materials from the first version and anime, even Proof of Justice serves as a teaser. The new canon enforces both of their roles as the deuteragonist, considering their close connections towards the protagonist.

@@aarong8099 The enhanced versions fixes the narrative issues seen in the first versions. They even add new characters/social links in order to give a deeper meaning of the themes and the mythology that each of the games represent. For Royal, they add Adam, another figure of Gnosticism as the final enemy, with the theme being the Garden of Eden and ideology being escapism from cruel reality/mistreatment. It was carried over in Scramble, using Plato belief for Sophia and False God Demiurge. Also they even pushed some of the characters being left behind greater importance. Aigis made her resolution after her return and promised day, it took effect in the Answer, after her partner's death on her arms. For Akechi, he made up his mind to restore reality even if he might die again. Both made their innermost realizations in near endgame, due to their close connections to the respective protagonists.

Damn. Akechi's role got a huge upgrade from this added segment. Back in the original game they don't even so much as mention him again after his death which was honestly pretty disappointing. Showing how his last stand affects the thieves by factoring it into the endgame choice is an even better upgrade than I anticipated

I didn’t really understand the Akechi hype in Vanilla, but Royal turned him into my absolute favorite character. He’s such a breath of fresh air to a team built entirely on optimism and the power of friendship. My only regret is that we didn’t have MORE time with him and Sumi as the sole party members, and him playing Navi. Those Navi lines live in my head rent-free

That's cool and all, meanwhile google and wikipedia and other sources gave me Hereward the Wake/Exile, an Anglo-Saxon nobleman and resistance leader of dubious origins who opposed the Duke of Normandy, William the First/Conqueror/Bastard. Hereward is another one of those interesting names that became antiquated and outdated in modern times.

6:38 Its so messed up Maruki completely disregards Akechi's feelings about his own life and death. At this point Maruki thinks he's being benevolent by granting Joker's wish, but its at the price of Akechi's autonomy as a human being. People say the false reality ending kills Sumire, but I'd argue it kills Goro Akechi too. His personality and memory rewrites are so extensive he may as well be a completely different person.

Late reply but hey. Maruki appears to suffer from what is called a Messiah Complex - he believes that, against _all_ reasoning, he is destined to "save" the world. That is why this so-called discussion is more of a Lecture, with him just telling us to accept his actions because we've no chance of victory. He neglects Akechi and Sumire because, at the end of the day, Maruki thinks he knows best; it's a worthwhile sacrifice. In regard to the rewriting of Akechi and Sumire, I'd say the PTs are being hypocritical with how quick they were to overwrite people, but that's another subject matter entirely. Regardless, I didn't hesitate stopping Maruki back then, and I never regretted my decision.

Small detail, but I really love how Joker has that little moment of "There's no going back now..." That little moment of doubt in situations like that is usually reserved for if you make the BAD choice, like accepting Yaldabaoth's deal, for example. It adds that little bit of uncertainty that makes this ending decision feel a lot less clear-cut. I really like that.

Robbie Daymond gets my ovations one more time! Completely different intonation and sounding of Goro. You literally can see his change from hokey detective to cocky realist. I watched this in japanese dub, which is good too, but english dub subdues to the core.

That may be so, Maruki having potential to truly do good for everyone within reach, but... what he did to Sumire was the best thing he could do at the time (she would have died if he didn’t act)... and the most cruel thing he ever did. Yes, Sumi may have wanted to be more like her courageous sister as much as possible, if it meant changing from the insecure self she once was... but erasing the positive aspects of her true self and living this lie she built on herself, with Maruki enabling it... it made me sad and furious at the same time. When the week of 1/2 to 1/9 happened, it solidified my resolve to beat him. He is only “benevolent” if you submit to his ideal that life is better off if you pretend the bad things never happen. You start to get mad... then as you explore the Palace, you discover that his distortion stems from tragedies due to circumstances beyond his control. His desire to rewrite history to avoid tragedy bleeds into reality... Long story short, IMO, Doc made a more convincing pitch to sell his reality on 2/2 than 1/9.

Akechi : "Your indecisiveness on the matter is essentially a betrayal of my wishes." Akira: .... Akechi: .... Akira: It sucks getting stabbed in the back in the back doesn't it? Akechi : Honestly, you're such a- never mind Akira: *proceeds to play Persona 5 theme song on his phone*

I saw a theory actually that Wakaba triggered his awakening, kinda like in P3. Since Wakaba had been researching cognitive psience and was almost done with it, she probably, at one point, experimented on Akechi. Considering where he was working with Shido, and Shido was interested/involved in Wakaba's research, he probably had her experiment on him for his own benefits. He knew she wanted to complete her research and was devoted to it, so he knew she most likely wouldn't mind doing human experiments, thus leading to his awakening to (possibly) Loki first. That was when he knew that he could use Akechi to eliminate anyone who got in his way. We all know that it's not confirmed that Akechi killed Wakaba since it's never said or implied that he did, he only knew her through Shido, so it could've simply been that he had Akechi find her shadow, then have others sent to kill her. Also Akechi holds his head in battle as if he's in pain, another possibility that he had a forced awakening.

Akechi is such a well written character. He may have been a villian but he died as a hero. In the grand scheme of things, his death literally meant the world. "A tree that has its branches reach to the heavens, has its roots laid in hell" or something like that is the quote. He personifies that saying. His capacity for good is equal to his capacity for evil. Fuckin S+ tier character and writing.

I got to say that i LOVE Robbie's delievey for Akechi- I love the BS line in this video as well as the calos line when 3rd awaking happened. RObbie has a smooth line and I love every moment of it. thanks robbie

Honestly, my thoughts are the same as with the JP version. Akechi showing what he really thinks and feels is a masterpiece. You can really feel the emotion. Of all the dubs I've played, P5 has the most amazing cast (voice actors).

I hated Akechi so much in the original. I didn’t care for his death since he attempted to murder Joker and blackmail the rest of the team. But Royal tho. My god this version really sheds light on his character in such a better way. Therefore he’s become one of my favorite characters, and definitely worthy of being the rival of Joker. Thank you Atlus for making Akechi a more loveable character.

I always loved how out of all of the Phantom thieves in the 3rd semester, Akechi, the one who will dissappear if Maruki's reality is destroyed, is the most determined to end Maruki's reality. The 3rd semester made me love him even more. Lol.

@@Aldona_koi Even if it’s for benevolent reasons, I’d argue the things he’s willing to do are up there with Shido and Yaldabaoth. - Playing on Sumire’s inner turmoil. - The failed deadline ending. He is pretty much insane more than evil in my books.

Ren’s ideal reality is one where akechi is alive and well, is on good terms with everyone else in the phantom thieves, and never had anything bad happen to him. That’s the only thing he wanted, as far as i can tell.

Before P5: Royal came to be, I’ve being working on a fanfiction in which in the original events of P5, before Akechi seemingly passed away, he was actually able to send his Robin Hood Persona to Ren to help fulfill the deal of defeating Shido on his stead AND POSSIBLY represent that Robin Hood is a Persona forged by Akechi’s bond with Ren as Akechi is technically a Wild Card user. But as Robin Hood is used by Ren, similar to Picaro Personas being wielded by a heart of the Trickster would trigger a change of color scheme and form. As Akechi’s Robin Hood design is based on a light savior superhero like Superman, The Robin Hood “Picarro” wielded by Ren would be more of a dark vigilante hero like Batman combining elements from Akechi’s true Black Mask outfit as well as the traditional green we know well worn by Robin Hood. Though it’s DEFINITELY not exact what I was thinking, Akechi’s TRUE Ultimate Persona being that the idea of the one who inspired Robin Hood whose design has Black Mask elements and also Akechi’s resolution in which resulted to it, in my opinion is why Akechi’s Hereward is MY #2 Fave Ultimate Persona AND MY #2 Fave “3rd Tier” Persona😈😎

8:17 This scene and the engine room scene were the ones where Akechi became one of my favorite characters of all time, i went from hating him to loving him and in the end we never got our rematch. You never really get to know someone until after they're gone

Honestly Akechi's redemption arc was extremely needed. The Vanilla P5 didn't do his character the justice he really deserved. I'm a big fan of him and find him to be an extremely well-written character, but of course, I agree he's done unjustifiable things(though to me that just shows just how much Shido screwed him over). Yet having said that, he also has a great amount of chemistry with Akiren, (as shown in the confidant interactions). I personally dislike it when people claim he's innocent, to be honest. He's not, that's part of the reason why he's such a peculiar character in comparison to the others. I believe people have fallen for the mask he puts on as "the charming prince detective", which only shows how little they know about his true self, and overall character, which leads to him not being appreciated for who he really is.

Agreed. I think the Phantom Thieves really wanted him to join them because they thought they could reform him, convince him to atone for what he did. I don't believe for a second that they think he's innocent or his crimes mean nothing. Probably, they just recognize his overwhelming talent and Joker probably feels the worst about letting such talent go to waste instead of reformed for good

Not me crying at this scene and thinking "You know what? I did everything for everyone, I was there for all of them when they needed me. Let me have just ONE moment of selfishness." Even then I couldn't accept the deal..

This scene is undeniable proof that pancake man is the best written character in the game

@Rylan H. Mangum Spoilers Thats still in the air, in P5R's ending you see Joker not looking out of the window for a second and Akechi walking by, meaning he's still alive, what most likely happen is that Maruki made sure Akechi and Joker will truly meet again.

Honestly picking the fake reality is extremely selfish, for the others it's selfless, but for Akechi? This is his life we are talking about, you're basically telling him that you own him if you pick the fake reality. You don't own his life and you can't force him to be alive, despite how sad that is.

Akechi’s persona is a mix with justice and evil that makes a balanced persona

The thing is, I am pretty sure Akechi didn't die in the boiler room. Cause illusions disappear once you know they are unreal (how Wakaba and Okumura disappeared and Morgana is cat again). So I think Maruki actually teleported him from somewhere (and he probably returned to where he was after they defeated Maruki, alas his appearance in the final of the game).

Details that I love here: a) Akira's illusion is not a wish-fulfillment for himself, but that a person he couldn't save gets to live b) Akechi would rather die than be under someone's control; He might be evil but he's CHAOTIC evil. Gotta respect that. c) How consequent the game is with its "control is bad" message in rejecting even genuinely benevolent control

Even though Akechi is a messed up human being who needs jail time and therapy. I love his character as he sticks to his ideals and doesn’t stray from them. After being treated like a puppet his entire life it’s perfectly understandable why he rejects Maruki’s reality. Akechi is one of the most complex characters in the persona series and I wouldn’t complain if there were a whole game about him. ❤️

This game really did such a good job on making it hard for you to make the right choice(for reality) like honestly they made you see how everybody lives would’ve changed if everything went perfect for them and you start to think maybe they deserve it with everything they’ve been threw. And then they show you this that not only your teammates will loose there well deserved perfect life, but Akechi would loose his own life. And the fact that he knew all along makes it even more serious it really made me sometimes just go with the bad ending and forget it all

I think the main thing that makes you finally shift away from Maruki is realising he's the same as the other Persona Bosses in result. While his intentions are good, this one singular being is trying to define happiness for everyone. He's not a perfect man and some peopel are better for their negative experiences and surpassing them. As many people as he saves, just as many will lose out.

Maruki: Oh, Akiren, are you sure you want to feel sad again? Just take this tsundere Akechi and live happily with him Now we know that Maruki is Shuake shipper ╮(. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)╭ P.s. Akechi is such a strong boy! I love him so much! Robbie's voice made the scene absolutely stunning. I'm crying :С

That's not what this scene meant at all.... It was regret of not being able to save Akechi, a victim, but Maruki gave him a "chance" to. But Akechi didn't want that chance because it would mean being controlled again. The bad ending Goro is just a brainwashed Goro. Cause if you choose to live in Maruki's world, Goro says he hates Akira and will never speak to you again, but it forced to forget that due to the dream world. That is not the real Goro. And tsundere is not a character trait.

@@featherrwbyrnjr I know that. And believe me, I fully understand that this scene is steeped in regret. It's just that I've been crying since the game came out in Japan(who am I kidding?.. I'm crying even now). Maruki really wants to make everyone happy. I noted this, but more positively

@@linatheshichirai okay but the ending where you chose to ignore Akechi's request and live in the dream world isnt good at all. Please dont say its Shuake or anything. Or that Maruki ships it or that Goro is tsundere. Calling Goro tsundere just ignores all that he is and what he fights for.

@@featherrwbyrnjr Wait... I didn't say about the alternate reality ending. I like it, though... Not because it's a Shuake, but just because I like it(although Goro's words "Then our deal is over" broke my heart). I still prefer the true ending, don't worry. The fact that Maruki shipper or Akechi tsundere is only part of the joke, don't take it seriously. Goro is my favourite character, I would never have put him down to the usual "tsundere" ‌

@Margaret Williams I think you're getting overly heated over a joke comment lol, fluffy never implied that Maruki's world is good or the right choice, they just said that Maruki wanted them to choose it. It's also kinda weird that you're getting so upset over them joking that Goro's a tsundere, those anime archetypes are never meant to be implied as sole character traits or anything, just a way to categorize how they show their affection. And based on Goro's personality towards Ren (who he obviously holds very closely and admires by the end of the game) it's not that far off of a description lol, just look at his battle quotes imgur.com/12tpMe8

Robin Hood: Lawful Good. The desired hero Akechi wanted to be. Lawful Justice. Loki: Chaotic Evil. The villain Akechi ended up becoming. Personal Justice. Hereward: Chaotic Neutral, and the man Akechi became at the end by accepting both sides of himself.

The game makes it very clear why Maruki’s mindset is flawed when you attempt the quiz puzzle and see his opinions on a “healthy individual”. He wants no one to experience any form of suffer either self induced hardship or forced, he wants to essentially lobotomies everyone where eventually people will stop thinking(bad ending when u don’t deliver calling card)

I actually played out both endings and what’s crazy idk which is better because the reality he made based off of things that made an individual happy, those dreams became tangible and even akechi with all his pain was free 😩 such a good character and worthy of my favorite

So the Akechi in the real world at this point of the history is the true and official Akechi? Because boy, I really wanted Akechi to survive Shido's Palace, and continue as a Phantom Thieve or just as a friend.

That is the real Akechi, and he is alive. He survived Shido's palace in the unaltered reality. However, Maruki changed events solely so Joker and Akechi would meet again, not to make Akechi survive. In the true ending, Joker barely misses Akechi walk by him, outside the window. There is still a chance they could meet in the unaltered reality in a sequel game.

Honestly if there’s another game I hope they continue the redemption path for Akechi. In the third semester I’d put him where vegeta was during namek and the android arc. An ally but not fully redeemed yet. I don’t even think he needs to lose his more aggresive side that he displayed. I think that shows he’s willing to be more open with the phantom thieves and especially Joker than he was previously. It’ll help his walls come sown.

I actually hesitated to do the right thing here after going through so much with Akechi. 😢

even though akechi betrayed us, he made the most selfless sacrifice. he threw away his second chance at life so the world can go back to what it was. he truly was the dark knight of this game. I can't express how amazing atlas made Akechi an even better character for a better purpose.

I’m so glad that Akechi gets the redemption he needed because a lot of people really hated him. I’m also very happy that we get to know him a little more ❤️

Seeing Joker and Akechi pain and suffering they endured reminds me of Ramza and Delita from Final Fantasy Tactics. Joker like Ramza knows Aketchi's pain like Delita's, they both fight for justice and help each other, on opposite sides, i hope Aketchi has a happy ending that won't be like Delita's ending of being alone knowing what they work hard for to help the good people, i feel bad for him. :(

Perhaps the next sequel after Phantom Strikers the miracle will take effect. I kind of shudder the thought of Mitsuru and Naoto "executes" the enitre police force and conspiracy since they know better the consequences due to their own battles. Also the character pattern hints of another girl with Charity as her Arcana to complete the theological vitrues. The girl likely fit Akechi's potential solo story akin to Aigis, with the grown up P3 and 4 cast heavily involved in helping him find happiness within the corrupt society which caused him to die once.

After I beat the game 4 times I still come back to this. So good.

So i literally just finished P5R two days ago and I loved this scene. Akechi comes full circle and it also completes the Hegal dialectic method and comparison of Thesis, Antithesis and Synthesis. And for me, that's fucking awesome! Thesis - Detective Prince: The Detective Prince is the thesis, the starting point and what is presented to us the players and the world around him. I wouldn’t be surprised if these notions of Justice were further amplified annd brought back up to the surface through his relationship with Joker. And while his Crow outfit might not be what you’d expect of someone’s rebellious spirit, giving it more of a nobleman look but it fits the Detective Prince persona. Robin Hood being his base Persona is likewise a really awesome and interesting thing because it’s very likely that this was in fact his original Persona. I look at Robin Hood as being the manifestation of Akechi’s own personal desires to be a hero from when he was younger, if Robin Hood’s schtick was to take from the rich and give to the poor, then Akechi’s is very much the same of wanting to be a detective and play hero to put away corrupt adults like his father etc. It’s also nice to see the facade chip away just a little bit in combat and that he’s very much a dork and a showoff in a very Tokusatsu hero way that is hammy as hell and it completely effin’ works. I wouldn’t be surprised even more if he grew up watching Neo Featherman shows as a kid and aspired to be like that, heck you can even tie that into the whole thing of having a toy gun playing hero as a kid to emulate those same ones. Antithesis - BM: The Black Mask is the antithesis and it’s the exact opposite of what you’d expect him to be on first impressions. You wouldn’t expect the prim and proper Detective Prince to be a berserker with rage issues, self-loathing and having all these feelings of anger, envy, spite, inadequacy and pent up baggage so when it all comes tumbling out, it’s honestly one hell of a contrast to see him be so chaotic. Loki is such an awesome and unique fit for the Black Mask being a trickster, a deceiver, a destroyer and ultimately someone of mayhem and chaos. I wouldn’t be surprised if Loki was brought up to the surface through Yaldabaoth, Shido and/or even Wakaba to some extent and it reflected his darker impulses and side that he tries to repress in order to blend in with society. And well, he’s a slave to these desires by wanting revenge on Shido that he’ll throw away his humanity, his reason and any bonds he could have had. Synthesis - 3rd Semester: 3rd Semester is the synthesis of the real him being somewhere in the middle and coming together by becoming a better version of himself that isn’t broken and alone through Joker and enabling himself to be unapologetically honest with himself. So he doesn’t have to hide behind false pretence, trying to be something that he isn’t and that it isn’t about fighting against your darker impulses but embracing them and using them as a force for good. He’s smug, ruthless and just as much of a berserker that loves to throw down as he was in his BM time but it’s combined with the uncompromising desire to do good that DP seemed to want to do and break Maruki’s reality because it’s the right thing to do, consequences be damned because it’s a lie and he’s done playing a pawn to someone else’s desires and being overwhelmed by his own crap. I guess you could say, it’s adhering to his own personal brand of justice. Likewise, he’s fully in control of himself. Everything about him just screams “Now you’re dealing with the real deal here.” Everything comes full circle with Hereward in the 3rd Awakening completing his journey as a hero/anti-hero type of character with it basically being Robin Hood but with a darker colour palette ala BM and Loki. It completes the state of Synthesis by becoming a hero that abides by his own chaotic brand of justice and execution but is still someone on the side of good who may operate in the grey area more than others but he’s perfectly fine with that because that’s who he is.

Holy shit I just processed this, wild cards can obtain multiple personas due to having bonds with other characters, Akechi only has 2 personas pre Hereward, Loki (his own persona the equivalent of Arsene or carmen for example), and Robin Hood. Despite Robin Hood being the justice arcana and Futaba saying it comes from his false personality Robin Hood could be the persona formed from his bond with the protagonist. Thieves den conversations somewhat go against this but I think it’s a neat idea

Except that it's confirmed Akechi got both Robin Hood & Loki at the same upon 1st awakening to the power so no, Akechi is NOT a wild card user like Makoto, Yu, & Ren are.

@@AngelKnightZeo713 This is only my headcanon, but I see it as kind of a flawed awakening. Akechi probably disregarded any sense of justice he had when he was awakening his persona and just stopped caring about the consequences of his actions, basically letting his feelings of inferiority and need for revenge be the sole fuel for his rebellion. Basically, he didn't just accept his shadow, he became convinced that the shadow, the worst part of himself is who he truly is, causing his persona to awaken- but also shunning his original self which still held just beliefs and ideals in the process. It could be that it manifested as a separate, weaker persona, and because he believed Loki reflected his true self, he likely only viewed Robin Hood as a façade even though they're both equally a part of himself. I personally believe that Hereward was his true persona, and that if he had awakened properly like the PTs did, it probably would have manifested as Hereward instead of two split personas.

I've been waiting for so long to hear this dubbed in English. I was not dissappointed.

Except that Strikers occurs after Persona 5 (PS3/2016) and NOT Royal (PS4/2020) which was mentioned during Strikers' development so Akechi is in fact dead; also, Futaba can sense people's vital signs so it's pretty much stated that Akechi died in Shido's Palace

I love Goro Akechi. I understand Goro Akechi. We all have a small part of Goro Akechi inside of us. First time i ever cried in a while was after this scene. Thank you, Goro Akechi.

I feel like kasumi was likely planned to be fem joker but they probably had a hard time changing the story for it and just made her a character in some of her other out fits in the third semester she is literally a fem joker.

And the real Akechi was drinking in crossroads at this moment.

Most 3rd tier Personas are interesting or have neat designs, but Hereward just straight up kicks ass. It's like Batman, Superman and Green Arrow all fused together.

This man Maruki--he had the Phantom Thieves cornered and dead to rights. Yet, he gives EVERY SINGLE OPPORTUNITY EVER to let you beat him, all for the sake of allowing "free will" in a "utopian reality". My favorite final boss, palace, etc, by far, and amazing story arc. Even if it was a little fan-service-y due to Akechi, but hey, I'll take pancake-boi any day.

Man, Akechi's "pleasant" persona really pissed me off throughout the entire vanilla, but I'm in love with his edgesona
