The audio engine of the S1100 is roughly equivalent to the MPC3000. Early 16-bit, very clean but also very colored. Punchy with great transients, a slightly compressed feel. Very well defined mid-range. The great mids and lower mids are what define the S1000 and S1100 sound to me. Very three dimensional sounding. The old AKAI's have a metallic sheen which works so well with drums/breaks. They remind me of the T1000 Terminator, imitating the sounds you sample into them, but with a bright, chrome gleam coming through in places. From the 3200/3000/2000/MPC2000 on, the sound got thinner and more brittle sounding. Much more emphasis on high and low end at the expense of the impeccable sonic balance of the S1000/1100/MPC3000 series.

Different but still a good sound. I still prefer the S1100 for jungle, can do much more complex arrangements compared to the S950

Very different. The Emu has a lot more flexibility synth wise than the Akai. However, the raw sound of the S1100 I prefer personally and it’s built in FXs.
