Akai MPC Key 61 - First Look - Sonic LAB Presentation

Ғылым және технология

Akai today officially announced the release of their new MPCKEY61 - the first sampling keyboard for quite some time from them. Essentially this is an MPC LIVE but with a 61 Key velocity and Aftertouch enabled keybed as well as a set of pads.
Also new is the upping of the internal RAM from 2GB to 4GB making the loading of full keyboard sample based sounds more fluid.
Note: Internal on board storage is: 32GB storage with 16 gb of sample library. This can be expanded with your own SSD
Its running the same 2.11 MPC OS that was released earlier this month, which adds a lot of sound browsing features for the included 6400 patches - all this was great for the MPC format machines but now kind of makes more sense when you are using this as a keyboard. The same for easy storing of favourites - for quick recall in a performance scenario,
Splits and layers are also straightforward making this a viable option for a stage keyboard - class compliant USB can add more MIDI and audio interfacing too.
On board SSD and room for expansion if you need more space - it's all as you would expect with all the features of the MPC LIVE and more.
We also have 8 discrete CV/Gate outs on minijack for modular hookup, four audio outputs, 2 inputs for sampling and processing, MDI in/out/thru/
We had a visit from Andy Mac from Akai Pro to give us a look at the new machine.
It's going to be shipping right now, priced at £1699, $1899, €1999

I don't know why Native Instruments doesn't try to do this, Yamaha/Roland/Korg skimp out on their sample ROMs in their keyboards, now Akai is going to be shaming them with sample libraries and far better sampling capabilities. I'm excited. 🍿🍿🍿🍿

Yep. I bought a Roland Fantom 8 and quickly returned it when I realized the pads were not even velocity sensitive! Also, the sequencer was very clunky and the keys on the upper register had a strange clang sound.

@@AlekVila MPC Keys is the only sampler keyboard with pads for finger drumming, pads on all rompler keyboards like the Fantoms are NOT for finger drumming, so don't try that, you'll damage the PCB underneath. Roland grooveboxes and SP404mk2 have pads for finger drumming as do the Korg Electribes. That's all.

Was thinking the same thing. Tbh, you can use Maschine with the Komplete keybaord S MK2 and get quite a similar workflow except for the sampling possibilities and the layering/splitting of the keyboard. The issue with NI is their extremely slow development process. It takes literally years to get some basic new features.

The only thing missing for me would be to add some more advanced sample editing, ensoniq style transwave editing, start, end, loop and loop position modulation, and this could be my return to the keyboard workstation as I used to enjoy. I am sure Akai could pull it off, then this would be the W30 and the EPS16+ ASR10 off a future generation. The rest is already great, love the MPC Live, but this would keep me off the computer way further into the song progress. Mix and Master in Live or Logic is still great once the the track is laid out, but being able to create by hands and ears and on a decent keyboard workstation has never lost its appeal to me. GO AKAI !

Polyphony is good and all but those patches gobble up Polyphony, cpu, and ram. I'd be curious to see if it can do a full 16 instrument track with high quality patches. That has always been the issue, you have to use more basic patches that us less voices and less effects when you have a lot of them . But regardless this keyboard looks fantastic overall.

This looks great and sounds very nice. To be fair, Korg has had a sampling/sequencing workstation for many many years. KRONOS II being the best example... It's great to see Akai in this workstation/sampling/sequencing category but to say it didn't exist before this is just not true. Yes, this pushes the envelope, but this flavor of envelope has been around for a long time.

Which is $200-$300 less than a Nautilus. Nautilus or kronos 2 can run miles around this MPC key 61, in terms of sound engines and 16 track recorder. I just wish it had 24 audio tracks with EQ. Either way I wont be buying Roland anymore. Akai and oddly enough Behringer have me covered for many years in the future.

Can definitely recommend the Force. It's all the best parts of MPC, plus an Ableton-style clips+arranger workflow and a bunch more pads and performance controls to play. It's clear that Akai thought Force was the future, and I think they were right, but it didn't sell well due to being an experimental new product and launching before it was ready. So they've been slowly working Force features into the MPCs. But instead of waiting, I upgraded to a Force and have been very happy with it.

Does this mean we’ll also get the synthstation sounds back from the original synthstation app that i enjoyed back in the synthstation days? Sorry for asking but i’m more of a portable workstation type of guy and I usually play and make music on the go, so i was just wondering if there’s a more affordable option on the lower end of the spectrum regarding mpc

this could be popular among live worship keyboardists (who are often the MDs). Being able to send click (separately), midiclock, and the tracks (separately and in STEREO). There has not been a way to do this without a laptop until now. I hope they add something like the matrix view from the Force. Handy for vamps (holding/looping a section because of singer banter/call and response/preacher breakdowns and other unplanned dialog).

Time to save up, or maybe sell a couple of keyboards to afford this beast. edit: on second thought, maybe I'll just get an MPC One and pair with my existing keyboards, which I was planning to eventually do anyway. Opinions: The price is very reasonable compared with other 61-key workstations for what you get; outstanding really imo. Good that it has a Sata drive bay and class compliant audio. The memory upgrade is great, but still no disk streaming as with the Force. Ideally for working stand-alone, the screen should be larger and have an adjustable tilt, but I get why tilt is not a feature (mechanically fragile). I bought foam yoga wedges and use one for my Force. Having an arranger like the Force would be nice. Lots of CV/gates are good. I moved away from the workstation KB world for various reasons, but a I have to admit this is tempting.
