Came across your channel when looking for Akai GX-4000D tape deck videos since I acquired this machine a few weeks ago. The machine you restored in this series was owned by me in 1978 all be it the silver version. The 4000D was switched on before I got it and tape transport was working. The machine is in cosmetic pristine condition with only one of the transport knobs missing. I found one on Ebay and there are two knobs again. The only thing missing is audio (!) so I need to investigate this, do all the regular stuff. I've heard from other restorers that the transistors used in this machine were dubious with age so I need to check and maybe replace. I have the schematic. Anyway, your teaser with the three machines in the end made me want to see more! thanks, and best luck with your akai. if you work slow and careful and keep lots of photos and notes and dont rush your machine will soon be better than new. right now i'm a little busy with some work-related stuff so the hifi video making will have to wait for a bit ;-)

Over a year later and we’re still waiting for the video showing the lubrication of that capstan/motor and mechanical parts. 😉😢

apologies ... a new job and new focus and not too much interest on the part of those who watch youtube videos means i just never got around to making more videos about the RTR decks. Quite difficult to justify the amount of time and effort that goes into making these videos when there's no real upside

Hi. My GX 4000D run littlebit slow. I change cap 2.5uf but still the same. If you know why, please help.

Problem with 4000 series is everything runs off one motor ... lubricate all shafts and bushing with synthetic oil and slightly loosen the two stage slip clutch mechanisms behind the reel tables. Also make sure you have set your machine up for 50hz [uk] or 60hz [usa] mains power supply according to where you live
