This game is actually based off of the Japanese urban legend Aka Manto, and the tall person in the red cloak is meant to Aka Manto. He basically haunts bathrooms and will ask you for blue or red paper. There are a lot of variations, but choosing blue can get you strangled and choosing red can get you stabbed. If you ask for a different paper, he drags you into the underworld. The only ways to escape are by ignoring him, running away, or saying you don't want paper.

mark choked so hard like he does in a lot of games like that, instead of waiting silently in the corner like hes done many of times to avoid mole man hes just running into the door trying to will it open faster and dies oh and he stalled before he went for the exit giving the mole man more time to reach him.... its just funny i think its the worst in dangle dongle farm where he says "if i get to the end and die im done" and what does he do? opens the exit and the runs for the tractor thinking its the truck ( the truck which he had the keys for and was in the garage he unlocked aswell) then after wasting all that time instead of hiding he runs for the exit and dies thus not trying again. its like he willed it into existence, self-fulfilling prophecy, throwing for content but like the opposite. Its frustrating to see Mark do this to himself and then never learning from it he just throws in the towel, blames the game and moves on to the next. Mark is so smart but refuses to think....i can respect that. mark is observant enough to tell when a game stutter is loading but not to see the difference between a truck and a tractor. my man is an oxymoron

But you need all the colored papers to get it. Speaking of which, the Well has the Blue Paper, so you'll need to find that coin. The Anatomy Model holds the key to escaping the school. The pieces are the Nose, the Ribcage (both of which you found), the Eyes (near the Pool), the Brain (exit the girl's bathroom and go R-L-R), the Left Arm (from the last room, go L-L-R), the Right Arm (in the Library) and the Organ (also in the Library, but you need to find the three red books to get it). as someone who has played this game it is great to see mark play it -the floating mask if it spots you alerts the monster -the monster can spot you if it does run and hide -the monster is dumb and lockers are your friend because of it -monster can't go in the vents -the red glowing things on the walls are used by the monster to get to one place to another fast when the floating mask spots you -the bug spray is useless don't use it it really isn't that good

Since Mark didn't know when he was saying it at the beginning I paused it just to type this, and also for people who would like to know Aka Manto is also known as Red Cape, it is a yokai from a Japanese urban legend. They mostly appear in public bathrooms to ask the person if they prefer "red paper or blue paper". Depending on which the person says is how said person will die. "Red paper" the person will be struck with blunt force trauma over and over and completely covered in their own blood, hence "red". "Blue paper" the person will be strangled to death, hence "blue". If you ask for any other color he will take you hell. The only way to live is literally just ignoring the yokai, or running away. I do not know if they made "yellow paper" an option in game, but if you choose yellow he will shove your head in the toliet. The story can be told with different changes but always the same outcome. Finally my love of Asian urban legends comes in handy!

I haven't seen Mark scared enough to actually have Alt-F4 as a consideration in his mind for a long time. Whatever this game is doing, it is hitting all of the right notes to create a horrifying experience and I applaud it. I am amazed that the creator was able to make a monster that instilled real dread into Mark whenever he knew it could be around. Bravo to them, and bravo to Mark for powering through for as long as he did. I would be very down for more of this.

This is an actually fairly scary game, but also incredibly difficult to beat. A lot of the later parts of the game are cryptic and would need a guide to reasonably beat, not to mention you can’t even save the game at any point (no checkpoints either). I would like to see Mark play more of this, but I hope he doesn’t burn out all his interest for this game through frustration or confusion. Edit: I'm fully aware that other youtubers have beaten this game (CoryxKenshin and Berleezy namely), but it wasn't easy for them either. If I'm remembering correctly they both also had to use guides or the help of others to beat it. This comment is more of a warning of what's to come in case Mark decides to play it again.

Aka Manto: A Japanese urban legend of a spirit that appears in bathrooms. It will ask the occupant if they want red or blue paper; both choices ending in a grim fate. This is actually such a creepy game, pretty challenging, and complex. I would love for Mark to look up some more of the story so the game is understood better, and for him to play more! There's just such an unsettling vibe to this game and I'M HERE FOR IT.

It's most likely more a reference to the author than it is to Asagiri's series haha. Oh and bonus fact: Bunsto Atsushi is the most popular rendition of the writer, but he's not the only one. There are also versions of Atsushi in the Love Heaven game, Bungo to Alchemist version, and another Atsushi from a game I forget the name of, but I do remember that version of him is a rather creepy stalker of the Akutagawa Ryunosuke in that game. I think there may also be a Bungo Shikkaku version, but it's been years since I heard the drama series.

I feel like the guy in the red robes stole Mark’s tactic of running and screaming blindly into the dark

This seems like a cool game that badly needs some kinda save mechanic. A 15 minute playthrough can't even get you to enter all the zones, let alone complete any of the complicated puzzles. As interesting as this game looks, getting caught out in a dead end while exploring only to lose an hour of gameplay doesn't seem all that fun.

There was another hunt-and-collect horror game Mark played, based off a creepypasta (The Hat Man I think) that was long and had no checkpoints. He went from enjoying it and getting spooked, to being sarcastic and not caring when the ghost appeared. At a certain point, a challenge won't be enjoyed even if completed. Getting through without saves should be an achievement, not be the difference between finishing a game or not.

Have you seen him play Nun Massacre? It's near the same game except with a different setting, and equally as scary. Yet, he never came back to it. He doesn't really revisit games anymore, so I don't expect to see this one again sadly.

I just saw your clip about how you cried because you've become so successful that personal connections with fans isn't feasible anymore. I'm so sorry Mark. I hope that you found some solace in that struggle by getting close with Ethan. You'll probably never read this Mark. But I just wanted to thank you for being such a good guy. You seem so out of reach and untouchable to all of us as your fans but I wanted to thank you for still staying a good guy and a real person. I'm sending love out to you for you and your work and your family, as well as your pals and CHICA. I'm sitting on my bathroom floor writing this and you probably won't ever see this, probably barely anyone else ever will, but I guess even though I don't think I'll ever amount to anything super big or great, I can still feel close to someone who is, even if it is in a sick and sorta twisted paranormal relationship where you become a recurring figure in my life while you yourself never know of my existence. The game is difficult, it's designed to have you running around with items (small inventory and lots of items that are used on the other side of the map). There are 7 pieces of paper and 7 anatomy items; either set leads to an ending, but finding the full set is difficult enough for someone who doesn't know the map. Aka Manto does love spawning near you as well, making the achievement for completing it without getting hit once very fun.

I'm mostly sensitive to audio horror, so the lack of any kind of sound in this game makes the sudden sound cues extremely terrifying to me But I have to applaud the creator for making such an intense horror game that is truly terrifying

Yes! That's another thing that makes this so unsettling. Your minding your business crowbarring some planks and out of no where hear shreiks that sound like a big foot hunter that got his own tv show only to turn around and see a 9 foot tall red caped, masked, and ugly son of a bitch with a giant steak knife. And you know that knife ain't actually for steak cause your the only real snack in the building and aka is see through sometimes so his ass obviously must be malnourished at this point and willing to eat anything.

i have never screamed watching a play through until now that was terrifying

Such a cool game, i heard it can get really cryptic at times though… it would be really cool to play on stream to hear everyone’s thoughts on what to do with some items

There's something so unsettling about that distortion effect. I mean, the sound design, atmosphere, and enemy design are all on point, but the warping in your peripherals, especially with all that wood/straight lines...Very effective design choice.

I think the warping you see is a render effect. When games back then couldn't process many graphics, they render the ones you don't see. This game probably did this so it gives it a more older feel. Pretty cool!

I questioned if the game was made by puppet combo when I first noticed that even though I knew Chilla made this. VERY different from their current style and nice to see them adopt their own.

I dreamed about a mirror specially crafted so that no matter who stood in front of it, it only reflected Markiplier. Like, I walked up to this mirror and my reflection was straight up Markiplier. I screamed. Next thing I know he's sitting at this random table a few feet away from me and he's just silently eating macaroni. I don't remember anything else from my dream, just the Markiplier mirror.

i would love to see more of that game. i love strange horror games rooted in convoluted mechanics and east asian culture.

That chase scene music shakes me to my core every time it plays. It is so unbearably horrifying, I cannot imagine playing this game myself😭

"Chillas art" games fit so well with Mark, I'm glad he enjoys them so much! Also, "chillapuccino" is now my favorite word, it's so fun to say! The developer did a good job with creating things that really stick! There's no way I'll see a chinchilla or a cappuccino again without thinking of "The Closing Shift"

This game scratches an uncomfortable itch so I'd love to see more of it. The whole concept of Aka Manto always messed with me since that things catches you off guad when you feel the most vulnerable, in an already claustrophobic place - the toilet. And if you don't know how it works, you are practically dead no matter what. I wonder how many pranks there are where people just hang blue and red toilet paper in public toilets.

Aka Manto is a challenging game but once you figure out all the secrets is really fun to play. Great job Chilla's Art!

What I love is that the enemies use a similar jump scare sound too the nextbot Father, actually sounds so good.

The ofudu Talisman is for the door at the start being held by the dark spirit, Inside that door is a shrine where you put the papers

I literally felt my soul leave my body when the centipede crawled by. I was so relaxed watching and I literally felt myself disappear for a split second when it came through.

According to Gab Smolders, Jacksepticeye's girlfriend, centipedes do get really grossly big in Japan, and can kill a child with their venomous bite. Not only are they disconcerting, they're dangerous, and like to hang out in bathrooms and attics.

@@maddieb.4282 Interesting. I've always heard all centipedes are venomous, but they don't hurt you past giving you a horrible rash (unless you're a baby or old). Glad it's too wet up here in Ohio for the big ones.

I know it would ruin a bit of the ambiance, but these kind of horror games where you need to collect thousands of items and backtrack everytime should allow some sort of save mechanics. Because as it is right now, I don't get the fun of redoing evrything when you've got too many objectives to complete. Anyway, this game legit scared me several times and I really love the art style !
