In this episode we're covering the fourth SMG, the AK74U.
It's a fully automatic weapon, unlocked at level 17.
Originating from the Soviet Union, the AK-74U is a shortened version of the AK-74 rifle.
The AK-74 was named for the year of its introduction - 1974 - but the shortened version wasn't introduced until 1979.
Technically the in-game name is incorrect - the proper designation would be the AKS-74U - the S stands for Skladnoy, meaning folding - referring to the folding stock of the weapon.
The Avtomat Kalashnikova Ukorochennyĭ (oo-kar-a-chon-ye), or Kalashnikov's shortened automatic rifle, was developed to serve as a compact weapon for tank crews, airmen, and paratroopers.
Although compact in size it fires the same cartridge as the full-sized rifle, albeit from a much shorter barrel.
This means the muzzle velocity is lower than it might be on a larger weapon, and paired with the smaller sight radius inhibits potential accuracy at longer range.
Still, it boasts better penetration than one might otherwise see in a compact, lightweight weapon - and its small size allows the weapon to be carried concealed or in confined spaces.
The cartridge fired is the Soviet 5.45 by 39 millimetre round - normally a steel-cored armour piercing variant, granting increased effectiveness against body armour.
Magazine capacity is good, at 30 rounds - and extended mags will give you an even better 45.
The AK-74U is a high-damage SMG, tied with the MP5K - and will kill in three body shots at close range, or two to the head.
Long range damage drops off to the usual 5-bullet kill for SMGs - and the 74U has the same limited range as its peers, losing its damage advantage from middle distance out.
Rate of fire is relatively slow, again tied with the MP5K at 750 rounds per minute.
A slower rate of fire does ameliorate the recoil somewhat, giving the AK-74U only moderate recoil to counter its high damage.
Although less manageable than some of the low damage SMGs, the AK-74U bests the MP5K as far as handling at middle range is concerned.
Other handling characteristics are also favourable, and as with most SMGs the aim time is quick, at 200 milliseconds.
Reload is swift too, especially considering the generous magazine size - 2.1 seconds is nearly a whole second faster than the MP5K.
The AK74U has one last attachment at its disposal - and it's quite an unusual one for the SMG class.
The in-game model is a little different - unlike the standard M203 or Russian GP-25, the 74U instead uses the BS-1 Tishina, a smaller 30 millimetre suppressed grenade launcher.
Aggressive players move fast and hit hard - but there's a balance to be had, and while bullrushing the enemy may work against some players you should take care to avoid getting yourself killed.
With a little situational awareness and dose of caution, you can still attain the higher killstreaks while playing aggressively - doing so is just a matter of mitigating risks.
Avoid open areas of maps - these will expose you to longer sightlines and might mean you'll end up in an asymmetrical gunfight at which you'll stand a poor chance of winning.
Instead, stick to the interior routes through levels - here you're much more likely to encounter enemies within your effective range, and be able to unleash the full potential of the 74U.
Beware the well-prepared enemy - a foe entrenched in an interior position might very well be expecting company, so learning the common defensive spots is crucial.
With the SMGs, you have superior hipfire over other weapons - so don't be afraid to pin the trigger before aiming should you encounter the unexpected.
By the time you guide your shots onto target they may very well already have succumbed to your fire.
The AK7U's enduring popularity reflects the devastating nature of the weapon, and it's a forgiving choice when compared to some of the other SMGs.
It boasts a good balance between damage and handling; although recoil is present the clear iron sights make it easy to compensate, so even without the grip the 74U excels at middle range.
However, it loses effectiveness quickly at longer ranges - and most assault rifles will easily best the 74U by the time you're dealing minimum damage.
Landing 5 shots against an opponent who only needs to hit you three times will prove difficult.
Still, if you can enter conflicts from a position of advantage on an unwitting opponent the recoil shouldn't prove too much to handle, and the 74U can serve as an adequate hybrid between assault rifle and SMG.
Its main asset is its versatility for aggressive use - no other weapon has quite the blend of damage, handling and mobility. A favourite of many, it's a common sight on the battlefield - and is deadly in the right hands.

I think that the biggest irony in video games is that the AKS-74U is often incorrectly depicted as an SMG, when it is in fact a carbine.

I think in resident evil 5 the AK is the 74 but it looks like the 47 since the model of the gun looks longer like a rifle compared to how small the 74u is in games

The grip and rapid fire don't fight each other at all. Rapid fire increases the cyclic rate. The grip doesn't slow it down. Higher rate of fire with less recoil is always good. The combo is worth it.

Super Mahilo He's saying that its more spreading yourself thin trying to cover everything rather than just focusing on a well rounded, low recoil class with the grip and without the added recoil of rapid fire or a fully aggressive class with rapid fire and a better tier 2 perk like Sleight of Hand or Steady Aim.

Rapid fire is particularly increasing recoil due to its faster fire rate up close. The Grip keeps recoil stable and deadly up close. If you combine Rapid Fire and grip together, it makes it effective, however this costs you the use of Sleight of Hand or Steady aim if your relying on using Warlord in an aggro strategy.

@@kidsIIIII009 honestly you don't need the grip even with rapid fire since the gun's kick is low enough anyway, i always ran red dot and rapid fire because it was good up close and at a distance. Plus it's reload is already quick enough imo to not need SOH and the hipfire having a little spread is a good thing uo close to make it shotgun like. Warlord is a great option for this gun overall.
If you essentially don't want to reload, Dual Mags and Sleight of Hand is incredibly op, as your first reload will simply just be damn-near instant.

I remember watching these back in the day to learn which weapons in BO1 were best for each situation, and now I can’t help but feel like the most recent CoD Black Ops Cold War is literally MOST of the SAME EXACT guns and matching play style for each one .. like, 10 years we’ve come full circle buying the same exact game with literally the same exact weapons 🙄 feel like a sucker, even this game had more content at launch than Cold War did .. and these graphics are at least to me, more realistic than the cartoony vibe they have going on nowadays.. smh 🤦🏽♂️

Matt Hirsh (This is all entirely my opinion so keep that in mind) Well if I had to rate the 7 CODs (I'm excluding the first 3) from 1 best to 7 worst I would put them in this order: 1. Call of Duty: World at War: You would have to have played this game in it's prime time to understand how amazing this game was, as currently it is filled with hackers. It was like Call of Duty 4 with the twist of Treyarch (Incase you haven't noticed I prefer Treyarch). The game had the best voice actors, some amazing maps, and a fantastic experience. Gun balance was the only downside to this otherwise brilliant military shooter. 2. Call of Duty Black Ops: I enjoyed this Call of Duty an extreme amount. I only thought there were two major flaws and 1 minor flaw, which is huge for Call of Duty. Second Chance should have been removed, the hit detection should have been fixed, and Ghost Pro should have been nerfed but that's it. No quickscoping, no deathstreaks, none of that, which was unlike the other newer Call of Dutys and I really enjoyed that. 3. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2: This game was so popular because it was so fun, which easily puts it high on my list. However, there was some bullshit that kept it from being higher on the list. 4. Call of Duty 4: Most people put this Call of Duty higher from nostalgia, and even though this is where I also started, and I have memorable moments of the solid military shooter, I think many people give this game too much credit. There was massive grenade spam which was annoying as hell, and it was very minimalistic compared to the modern day Call of Dutys. 5. Call of Duty Black Ops 2: Now many of us agree that the older CODs were way better and everyone has their own favorite, but out of the three newest to date, I would have to say Black Ops 2 is my favorite. Sure, there is tons upon tons of bullshit that can make you ragequit half the lobbies. However, the gameplay, like MW2 the exciting and hectic gameplay keeps this game from falling for me. I personally enjoyed this COD very much, not as much as 1-4 obviously but still very much. 6. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3: Now, this is where I do not enjoy the CODs as much. Modern Warfare 3 just seemed broken and unfinished. It was just like MW2 accept more bullshit and not as much fun. Modern Warfare 3 had some fun moments, but its downsides just irritated me too much. 7. Call of Duty Ghosts: Now, this game was a complete failure and waste of time to me. I do not recommend anyone to buy this game. It has unbalanced weapons, boring gameplay, camper encouragement, the worst community, too high weapon damage, shady developers, the worst lag I have ever seen. I will put it plain and simple. I hate Ghosts. You may disagree with any of these but this is my opinion.

none, just ditch that grip and take scavenger, sleight of hand and ninja. grenades are irrelevant (though stun is the best), equipment prob a claymore or this movement sensor thingy. secondary also irrelevant. it's a late reply but whatever :D
The AN-94 is actually a completely different weapon than the AK-47. I'm honestly happy to see that some people can tell the difference. While some people know that the AN-94 is a modern AK, they also seem to believe that it is also in fact the exact same weapon, but AK weapons are not capable of 2-round burst (That feature is a real life capability).
I like how he says certain attachment/gun combos are lackluster yet gets precise, efficient kills with them.

Use AK74u with rapid fire (Lightweight Pro, Slieght of Hand Pro & Marathon Pro). Sometimes I feel like everyione else is in slow motion (use 8 on sensitive scale). Have gotten used to the recoil, no problem. Love rushing with Ballistic as 2nd. Great vid.

FN Wolframe Its a testament to how much KZread has grown, for sure. Remember when the CoD community felt like this tiny little niche? I was one of the only people in my grade who watched videos like this. Now watching gaming has gone so big time that MLG events at MSG are louder than the Knicks games.
when i tried to put on grip and rapidfire with warlord it wouldnt let me. any suggestions? btw it wasnt pro if that clears anything
AKS-74u is a carbine version of the AK-74, it has the 74 in it , it uses the same calliber as the AK-74 and AK-47 was put out of production in 1959

That is so true... The AKS-74u fires the same round as is bigger brother (the AK74), but has less muzzle velocity and accuracity because of the shorter barrel.
I always use the rapid fire attachment,love your videos
I used this gun a lot when I was leveling, as it seemed to handle really well (I don't pick weapons based on stats). But then I noticed everyone else used it in the SMG category. So I switched to the Spectre. :)

On PC yeah but if you are talking about consoles you're a dumbfuck. I've played black ops 2 days ago on Xbox for 3 hours straight and I haven't found no hackers. I played it on ps3 a month back and the same no hackers.

Watching XBOXAHOY is like Watching a national geogrphic or history documaentry!
Alot of the things that make this comparable to assault rifles is the fact that it technically is an assault rifle. It's a smaller variant of the AK-74 & fires the same rifle round, unlike SMGs which use pistol calibers, most notably 9x19 (classic 9mm) or .45ACP

it also provides the fact that you can stay on target at range and hopefully get a kill from there, and you get a large amount of ammunition for close range hipfire
i liked the score streaks, it made the game more team friendly instead of people just going for their won K/D ratios. and the things like millimeter scanners and ghost not working if they aren't moving helps get rid of campers. As far as noob friendly, they got rid of death streaks so that's a thing.
AK-74 was introduced in 1977, the 74u was introduced in 79, Black Ops takes place in 69 meaning that's at least 8 years off, the creators are even bigger fuck ups than i expected.

The AK 74 was put into use in 1974 just so you know. Also while you can argue this point the game is that the multiplayer happens during the same era (cold war) as the campaign. Also blops 2 doesn't take place in the 80s pal. It was supposed to take place in 2025.

Amaan Chaudhry I was referring to the blops 2 flashback missions, all of which take place in the 80s. I don't get why people get so god damn confused about this next point. If you just glance at the little text at the beginning of every mission in blops, it always says 1969. The multiplayer in every COD takes place at the same time as the campaign, so I don't see why black ops always confuses players on this point. Also don't fucking argue with me on guns, you'll lose. According to everything I've read, the 74 was first seen in use at Red Square in 77.

To be more accurate, it's a carbine. I also feel like saying that it's an AR just because it uses an intermediate cartridge is not the best assumption to make, since the P90 and Five-seveN both use a round that is in actually the exact same diameter as the 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge. Granted though, it is almost half the length. That being said, a lot of CoD games are like this. This gun would be a better fit in the AR class of weapon, similar to how, in BO2, the M27 should be in the LMG class, since IRL it is the US military designation for the LSW variant of the M416. But ah well, a games gonna be a game :P

i see.. actually, i learned from a video before (i cant really remember which one) that prepatch, the grip raises the centerspeed to 1800 (+200).. that's why they cut it in half (+100) post patch.. though i still wasn't sure.. i think u have experienced using the grip on it first hand, pre and post patch.. have u noticed or felt any difference?
The Peacekeeper (which does not yet exist) is an SMG. It fires the 5.7x28mm round, which is the same used by the P90. It's basically a "mini-assault rifle" bullet in that it's designed for longer range and penetration (compared to pistol rounds, that is). But, when compared to actual intermediate (aka - assault rifle) or full rifle rounds, it falls short. So yes, the Peacekeeper is an SMG

I currently have a ps4... However I miss this call of duty so much I'm going to buy an Xbox one just to play this since its backwards compatible lol. Fuck all the new cods and the lame 40ft jumping and wall running. I'll be playing this and cod 4 and having a blast!

when you have: grip, rapid fire, and regular recoil, could you put the recoil of the gun all on the same screen? so we can see the difference. Good video
I want this remastered for ps4. This was my first CoD game ever and I loved it. I played a lot of it to know what classes suit my play style.
This game looks better than Ghosts:P

The "AK74U" is the incomplete name of the AKS74U . The wright way to call it is AKS74U . But because most people don't know what "AKS" means , the usually refer to the gun as AK74U . To translate what AKS74U in english , it basically means : "Automatic Kalashnikov With folding stock ,model 1974 in carbine configuration " AK = Automatic Kalashnikov S= Skladnoy witch means "folding " , referring to the fact that the gun has a folding stock 74=year of production U=short

Great first step, except the second part regarding its distinction from carbines, which I cannot seem to find in any definition (if you could find a reliable source that'd be great) Now can you tell me what the M4 carbine fires?
Just curious then, what would you call an LMG that uses 9 x 19mm?
The grenade launcher should def offer some better controllability somewhat like the vertical fore grip. Like how they finally made the ACOG usable in BO2, the should have increased centerspeed when the grenade launcher is attached.

+Super Mahilo Considering that they didn't do it in CoD4 or MW2, I wouldn't be surprised they didn't do so in any proceeding Call of Duty game that had the Grenade Launcher.
the aks74u version that takes the grenade launcher attachment is made by izmash not Tula.. thats a very rare version of this weapon.. only 1 or 2 izmash aks74u parts kits were ever imported to the usa and they did not have the attachment points for the grenade launcher attachment .. the majority of the imported parts kits were the TULA made versions from 1986.. fewer older variants came in and some newer ..
you're right about the centerspeed part. as feeling any difference, the recoil is still low, but the gun feels weaker without that headshot bonus. that's just me though
what gun has same DPS with rapid fire?
Would Grip help the ACOG attachment?
i find this weapon to not really excel but to be a very reliable gun that can be used in most situations

AKS-74u production started in 1979, it still uses the 5.45x39 like the AK-74

it's an assault rifle, which means that it is (technically) a rifle. Whether or not a gun is an AR or an SMG has nothing to do with the length of the barrel (which determines whether a gun is full-sized or a carbine or kurt version); the size of the cartridge fired is.
So, grip and rapidfire makes it so the 74u has the same recoil as like it didnt have grip, but it has the high fire rate? Complicated to understand.
black ops is frickin' vintage nowadays, (at least to me it is) i still remember what i had on my AK74U after having the game being STOLEN from me over a year ago. Grip and Rapid fire, that would have been MASSIVELY effective if i was smart back then
so what attachments aren't nooby for the ak74u??
