AJP PR7 ADV Bike! - Short Practical Review! (SPR)

I head out for a Sunday cruise on the PR7 and decided it was time I did a review on the PR7. I have done 10,000 kms on the PR7 so I feel qualified to make comment and offer you my thoughts.

I totally agree with you on preferring the simpler, non-computer driven new bikes. I love my 2017 KTM 1090R and 2023 KTM 350 EXC-F for that reason. Great video, thanks for sharing!

Thanks for putting this video together! This bike is what a large number of us adventure riders here in Australia are looking for! Hope we only see more of these around and AJP just look at making some fine adjustments like they had done with the 2021 + model allowing very little R&D on fine tuning and concentrate on selling a quality/competitive product option which has good dealer network that is going to be around for the next 10 - 15 years, as in my eyes would fill the void in the market!

A lot of good advice here. He is spot on re the weights, my old DR set up for dirt touring weighed 185kg. I also felt that the Dr was too gutless for highway work and converted it to a 790. Many people have said the PR7 is the bike that Japan should have made. Pity, it would be a top seller year in year out but will never happen.

Yeah great shame that Japan has dropped the ball when it comes to mid size ADV bikes. The Tenere is just a bit too heavy for my liking. Happy with the 790? I like that offering shame they dropped it....

What country do you live in for the DR to be gutless for the highway. I'm in Australia and the speed limit is 110kph. The DR will idle along at those speeds with ease and still have plenty of oomph for overtaking.

Hi Alan, yeah parts no problem the Australian importer has stock and is responsible with questions etc. I enquired re getting a LED indicators upgrade and they contacted the factory and quoted it up for me. Bought a few parts already and arrived within a week with shipping details provided etc. Seat height is 935 I think very similar to 690/701. There is lowering links available if U need to lower it. I'm 6 foot and it is perfect for me. Yeah they are ready to go out of the box all built and fitted by the factory so it's done really well. All you really need is a rack. Now having said that I have since fitted crash bars for some extra fuel luggage restraint and depending how U navigate U may want to fit a GPS. I'm a paper map type of guy so the tablet with Hema maps is perfect for me Regards Steve

Hi Eric, yeah the tablet is an older model Is but doubt there available any more. AJP are currently running a Samsung tablet. But yeah it's just a matter of finding a tablet with the right dimensions really. AJP have a little bit of there own software on it which I'm sure you would be able to download load. Thork Racing have a full suite of obd and navigation packages that will work on the PR7 as well. I just have a Hema Maps downloaded version and that's it. Of course U can hotspot phone or connect via wifi and use as a standard tablet as well Thanks for watching Regards Steve

The crash bars are really about carrying a bit more luggage than crash protection to be honest. Going to do some bigger trips where I'll carry a fuel Bladder dropped over the air box. It's also about looks I think they make the bike look a bit more rugged. Simple install 4 bolts and your done. Mine are the Crosspro and they fitted perfect.

No problem with clutch chug these engines are known for? As for the pump if you ride in dusty conditions or deal with bad gas just carry and replace the fuel filter. I had mine washed at 40k miles it is a common size. Also the starter positive brush was gone at 42K but my Superdual was suffering from flameouts

  • @dirtbikeadv

By clutch chug I assume you mean it being a bit grippy when engaged? Mine doesn't suffer this I can push the bike backwards in first gear with the engine running. There is a snatchyness off the bottom? Mine has that not really worrying me but probably buy a ADV Eng ECU at some stage. Yeah good advice on the fuel filter I will do exactly that. A starter motor brush going at 42K is not a huge concern but I will pull apart and have a look at some stage. Absolutely no flame out for me but I have heard of this with some of the earlier PR7's Thanks for watching. Regards Steve

@@dirtbikeadv The pr7 is aimed at the middle age adventure rider and I think with the 48 hp 600 cc engine and almost 400 lbs the seat does not match the bike . Its to narrow and a narrow seat no matter how soft kills your butt within 5 miles . If they would make a long travel comfortable seat that people over 30 years old would appreciate like whats on the BMW sertao or the bmw F series or the gs series as a option or standard I think this bike could do really good in todays market . BMW stopped making the 650 cc a few years back so they now go from a 300cc and jump right up to the 800cc That leaves the 600 to 650 cc market wide open . If they could get there price down to around the klr 650 range just for a year or two and offer a good long warranty I think it would really sale like crazy in the USA .
