Aiwa AD-F500 Early 90s Cassette Deck - Transport Repair, Soldering, Belts & Calibration

Another poorly cassette deck in for repair. Today I'm spending most of my time fixing someone else's half hearted efforts. lots of repairs and a good full service.

I really miss the hi-fi stack systems of the 80s & 90s. They looked awesome and sounded great, miss the boomboxes too.

Amazing work! I took my old aiwa with autorverse out of storage and fixed it. I spent so much time cleaning out the melted belts. Then it took multiple attempts to clean and gently lubricate the autorverse mechanism. I was cringing so hard when you just slapped it back together. But it worked out. I'm very impressed!

Thanks for a great video, just used it to revive a similar unit that hasn't been used for over 20 years. A mention also to Matt at DeckTech who was very helpful in providing a full set of new belts - recommended. End result sounds a lot better than I was expecting, perhaps better than I remember. Now I can digitise that stack of old tapes.

Superb work this deck sounds great better than the ad f450 i have .I have recently done my aiwa ad w x828 twin deck i bought new many years ago, it was an absolute pain, i knew the solenoid's had to be unsoldered and this was easy. The duratool desolder station from cpc makes it quick and easy .You have to seat a leaf spring switch on the motor board correctly . oddly the 2 cam positions for deck functions are not in the service manual i went round in circles trying to figure it out before looking at a Russian guys video on the ad w x929 and he pointed and showed how to do it i took a screen shot on the phone and then it was good i now knew how to set the deck and upon testing it was mostly good but wrong functions every now and then on the front panel buttons .i bought a spare parts deck and swapped button boards over and all is fine the spare parts deck was quite handy for working things out at some point i will sort it out as i now know how to do theses decks with no problems .my deck was stored in a loft most likely why it needs the button switches replacing .All i need to do now is the idler tyre and pinch rollers on my 3 head aiwa .

23:41 PCB-E is the board (PCB). You can see the hole where the clip was melted in and it looks likes it comes off with the solenoids. 50:14 I found metal screwdrivers can mess with the speed adjustment pot when removing them as they also conduct. I was able to find some ceramic ones online for that. But their shafts are too short for azimuth adjustment. Good job cleaning up that other person's mess!

I find with these you don't need to remove the PCB and desolder it. You can click it up slightly with just enough room to fit the belt in place around the black wheel then click it back down. I fixed my memorex auto reverse deck which is just a rebadged aiwa this way. They sound really good for what they are. I made a few mix tapes for my friend and she says they sound like a CD in her car! :) Good stuff.

I had an AD-F450, which came out a couple of years after this. Essentially the same deck, but the 450 didn't have tape calibration. Not bad decks when they are working properly. I think I only paid about £80 for it new, from Richer Sounds back in the day.

Dude, put a regular rubber band over the capstan and the belt to hold it in place. Once the parts are assembled, just cut the rubber band off :-). I've done my Aiwa belt replacements, but this one is a bloody nightmare. Must be the '90's model. In the '80's they did them more friendly to service.

Only problem there is, we have neither experience nor equipment for unsoldering/soldering so is it really possible to avoid that? We have opened it, cleaned of the old belt remains and etc but now that's the problem. Any suggestions? Thanks a lot 🔝👏🏻

If you're just looking to get a new belt on it, I believe from memory you can fit one without soldering. But not entirely sure this was a while back now! Buy a small crochet hook to help you thread it through small gaps but be very patient. Are you in the UK?

@@pwrestoration Thanks for the quick reply, highly appreciated. I'm in Greece. I've ordered the same wide belt you used in this video. For the other belt I have to pass inside though do you have any suggestion on approximate size? I have some spare belts from China should I try and see what fits best? Unfortunately the old belts completely disintegrated so I can't compare them. Thanks again.

  • @pwrestoration

    10 ай бұрын

@@radra1040 could be two issues. 1. Does the larger motor spin with no belt on it 2. If it does, don't disassemble the transport but instead take the large belt off in situ. Try turning the capstan (the large silver wheel on the transport the motor drives) by hand. The transport my be a little stuck between modes. Don't force it and break it, but try and see if it turns freely by hand.

Hi Terry of course, I -think- I did that in my other video for the same deck.. I can't remember! It's one screw on these decks, but if you have poor sound I would leave it alone and change your pinch roller. It's a common fault on these to cause tape skew a little and lose your treble when playing tapes.
