He has some amazing skills, but he has two big things working against him. First is his size. He is 16 years old and only 5'3" and 117 lbs. By 16 most guys are within a couple inches of their adult height, meaning it is unlikely he will ever be taller than 5'6" and 130-145lbs. The only successful player I can think of that size was Theo Fleury, but he was built like a tank at 180lbs. Even Johnny Gaudreau would have 3 inches on Aito. Second is lack of competition. He is clearly on another level compared to the rest of the Japanese kids he is playing against. If he were in the highest leagues of Canada, US, or Europe he couldn't simply dangle or out skate everyone with ease. I wish the best for him, hopefully in the coming years he can make his dreams come true. It will be a tough road for him for sure.

  • @Scottosaur

You have some valid points here, especially with competition but remember, we don't know what this kid wants. He might be perfectly happy being a Japanese hockey phenom and staying with his family and friends. He has a passion for the game that isn't just on an individual accolade level. In his highlights he celebrates more when his teammates score than when he puts on a TSN highlight reel play of his own. Also with the size thing, you're definitely right on being undersized, but I was 5'2 and 135lbs when I was 16 and the summer between 16 to 17 I went to 6'0 and 180lbs. The game has changed and size isn't as important, if he can keep himself safe, his skill will speak for itself. All we can do as fans is watch and enjoy!

Props to Pavel Barber for taking this kid under his wing over the years but truth of the matter is I'm not sure if he's really interested in playing pro hockey anywhere except maybe back home. If he was serious I'd say he's already here playing in the North American leagues. Unless I'm wrong and he is already. It would be a great story if he made it somehow even in the AHL or ECHL. But the junior leagues in the U.S . and especially Canadian juniors are a whole nother level then if he's still in Japan. Needs to come over and try at least or else he'll be another nice kid story. Really rooting for him though would be cool to see if he can play at a higher level.

He has great intuition, he needs to learn to give n go, or physical play will shut him down at higher level. Also would make it much less predictible on fake pass/shot play. Overall tallent is off the roof tho, great projection from his evolution so far.

Have you noticed how many players in these Canadian and American teams are from all around the world? Obviously Canada is hockey country, but that doesn't mean anywhere else dont play hockey bud. You'll be surprised how many good players are in any country.
