Engagement rings are generally conditional gifts in the U.S. until the wedding. So yes, she did owe it back to him. Also, funny that she had a problem with his hours, but he was the only one she expected to change jobs. So, she broke off the engagement, but expected to keep the ring, and still live with him. Either it was an ultimatum to get him to quit his job, or she actually felt entitled to all this even after the split.
