    That's the only thing I could think of for Dad and Derek's actions to make any sense. Like OP, to me it seemed like a really weird and overly complicated solution to a problem with way easier ways to solve it. Like you have a new born son/grandson. I feel like saying that your new born son/grandson is starving is just as good of an excuse as stealing money to pay for a kids college. Even with the fact that apparently the boss knew the mother and I guess knew that the grandson wasn't biologically the mom's.

  • @domvasta

    But would that have been believable at all after the way his Dad had treated him? "Hi Boss, I risked my job, my son's job and jailtime to steal money from you, so I could pay for college for the other son that I psychologically abused and kicked out before his 18th birthday because he was taking up space that I wanted to house my grandson and that was inconvenient for me, but here he is to confirm that story"

  • @domvasta

    In a situation like that, to avoid getting a criminal record, I'd take out a second mortgage to pay off the debt, clear my own name and try and get my job back and get a written agreement from the son who stole the money that he will pay me back in full plus the interest and confess that he was doing it all on his own.

    "Do it for Dan" became a meme among this type of stories now. But also give a leverage to tell the experience of people who went through the same kind of bs. I had a semi "do it for dan" type of story but in a less degree, but for a cousin ... who i also refuse and my parents has like a "come to Jesus" moment just instantly after refuse and said my reasons. My parents want to gift PC parts i have from my old repair service to a cousin who was a jerk and a bum (now day he turn this around after had some fall down with his ex). I didn't, because i profit from those parts. Even more when he stole my AV cable from my PS2 in the past. I point out that very thing and remind them that "despite the PC was use by my godson too, he still hoard it in the past". They semi-got mad at the begin but i ask them one question: "would to you prefer to do the same for my bum of an aunt (his mother), who didn't do anything else but complain about us and negligent my cousins?" ... my mother kinda stare in silent at me for a moment before realize what i mean with that. Also one of the moment i genuinely had the "Money" excuse everytime i had the "what cost you?" excuse bs my mother spit, and her realizing why i keep those PC parts. Now day with inflation economy she is glad i said "money" as an answer for why i don't do "X thing" to someone. Down the line, that same PC went to my godson who has ADHD. And to him i don't had problem to repair his PC for free and gift any part he need in case of repair.

    "I was supposed to start college in a couple of weeks and that was already going to be taken care of." Okay. By whom? The maternal grandparents? A trust left by the mother? He's pretty vague on this point. Regardless, I don't understand how this cover story was supposed to make any kind of difference in their predicament. If you steal money and then use that stolen money to buy a present for someone else, that doesn't make the recipient of the present responsible for stealing and/or paying back the money. Were they hoping to somehow manipulate the situation so that the payback money would be taken from OP's college fund? Was that even possible? And if he had a college fund to take from, wouldn't that clearly demonstrate that there was no need to steal money for his college in the first place? There's no actual plan in this plan.

  • @Olimar92

    @Olimar92

    Ай бұрын

    I don't see why the source of the college fund means anything. It's just a nugget to say "They are lying, and I know that." The point of the lie was to try and get the CEO to give them more time to pay back what was stolen. They already had a couple months to try and pay back the debt without the Lawsuit, but they wanted more time. Why? obviously because Derek has already spent the money and it will take more time for them to try and get the money to repay the debt.

  • @zardox78

    @zardox78

    Ай бұрын

    @@Olimar92 It means something if the plan was to eventually take from that college fund to pay back the money. If it was in a trust, then presumably no one could touch it, maybe not even with OP's say-so. If it was just coming from the grandparents, the same restrictions might not apply, but _they_ would be the ones who needed to be convinced to help. If more time was the one and only motivation for telling this lie, then what's the point in involving OP at all? How should he know where his loving and generous half-brother was getting all this money from? They didn't need his blessing just to lie about it. He wouldn't have even known any of this was going on if they hadn't alerted him to it. And why would they assume that a sob story would add any time to their deadline?

    I’d reach through the internet and slap the OP if he agreed to that asinine plan. Receiving stolen goods is a crime. Not KNOWINGLY receiving, just receiving them at all. So by agreeing that they did that “to help with his college” would not have been a wholesome thing to warm the boss’ heart, it would have opened the door for that company to sue all three of them. And since the OP has money for college they would have seized those assets, broken the required amount down three ways and as soon as the brother and father found their thirds, the OP would be trash floating on the wind again. Remember kids; when someone says “quick, tell them you were part of our crime” you reply with a laugh then walk away.

    I’d say accept the offer, go to the office with them and when they finish up the made up story of stealing money for you.. just deny it in front of the boss .. be petty.. let them have it .. will save you from them constantly trying to provoke you to help them out ..

    It’s weird that OP’s dad thinks that OP would be inclined towards friendliness, except for being angry about whatever. But… OP is fundamentally indifferent, unless there’s some kind of reason for him to give a fuck. And at no point have either of them done anything to warrant that kind of friendliness. The kindest thing he had to say about Derek is that Derek didn’t pick on him for a whole day, on Derek’s wedding day. So unless dad and/or Derek can cite ANY example of a reason OP should exert any effort at all… OP won’t do shit.

    Plots are hard for these poor creative writers. Six year age difference, went to middle and high school together. Tried to explain to them, but doesn't know the difference between civil and criminal court. Tries to make himself the victim, but writes himself as such an insufferable prick that I want to pick on him.

    My situation isn’t as bad as that, and my parents have helped me out at times, tho most times with some sort of recompense, but my bro is definitely the golden child and gets everything he wants and treats my parents like crap even tho he’s older than me, over 40yo, married with 3 kids and still lives at home with mom and dad… the hypocrisy is real people and it sucks. Thankfully I have my grandma to help me like OP had his. Hope things work out for him and his dad and bro get what they deserve in the end

    "I'd hate to have a father in jail". The thing is, OP wouldn't have a father in jail. They'd have a selfish, enabling jackass in jail who's such a coward they try to have other people get him and his rusted golden child son out of trouble. No love lost there.
