Airstream Camping in Big Sur, CA | Things to do in Big Sur with a Dog
What better place to bring my Airstream on it’s first camping trip than Big Sur?!
I moved into my Airstream as my full time home 2 months ago. This was the easiest camping trip ever to prepare for because I didn’t have to pack a thing! Instead, I brought everything I own with me (which isn’t much, but it’s all I need!)
01:15 Riverside Campground (Big Sur, CA)
04:06 Pfeiffer Beach (Big Sur, CA)
05:57 Cruickshank Trail (Big Sur, CA)
06:41 Ragged Point, CA
07:04 Elephant Seal Beach (San Simeon, CA)
08:39 Garrapata Beach (Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA)
09:11 Carmel Beach (Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA)
I’m beyond grateful I got to enjoy some time on the coast, as I will be leaving California soon. My goal is to take my next travel CT assignment in Oregon or Washington starting in late June/early July 2022. If you have any recommendations of certain cities/areas to aim for, traveler friendly hospitals, or any good RV spots for 3 months, please shoot me an email! I’d love to chat.
Thanks so much for joining Rue and I on our Big Sur adventure!

As a fellow travel nurse (in Napa, California currently) and Jeep owner, you are definitely making me want an Airstream even more!
Big sur in a airstream... does it get anymore iconicley American than that... your living my dream young lady!!.😎💕🇺🇸
My dog and I camp in Plasket Creek Camp Ground in Big Sur the week before. Here's the crazy part. His name is....Roo. haha

How funny!! Happy adventuring to you & Roo!
You need to call campgrounds and tell them you are a travel health care nurse or whatever. They make exceptions is what I heard. Sometimes they say no vacancies but they usually have a spot available for emergencies due to a tenant that might have to move because electric didn't work or etc. So try calling and explain your situation.

Thank you for the advice Patricia!
Nothing beats the California Coast. You’ve motivated me to go to Big Sur this coming up month. Awesome adventure. Thank you
Farms...look for local farms. They usually have extra land and welcome short term tenants. I have heard there are some apps for finding local farmers willing to host nomaders.
Boy I’m enjoying your videos. Stay safe. Being alone might cause you problems some time. Please make sure you have mace. Good luck and live it up.
Hi Sarah! I’m a single woman in Northern California who is picking up my 19 foot international serenity on Tuesday April 26! While I grew up (dry) camping, I have become a complete city girl and recently rediscovered my love for the outdoors.I am so excited to follow you and since you’re only a couple of months ahead of me, to learn right along with you! My canine companion is a French bulldog, Gnocchi a.k.a. Gigi. I am not a full timer but I can’t wait to start exploring. Just wanted to let you know that I discovered you this week and I’m already an avid fan! I am sorry California is losing you but I’m looking forward to seeing you in your next video! All the best to you and Rue (adorable) from Karin and Gnocchi
Very nice. (English is not my first language) This film has a therapeutic effect. So calming, relaxing, soothing. You remind me of Maddie Taylor. Just watching you smile, Sarah, is a great relief/distraction. You lay me down easy, in my mind. Thank you.
As a former Californian myself, I really do appreciate the beautiful scenery you captured and the places I have visited so long age. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and bringing me back home for a few minutes❤️ Take care🤙🏼
Apart from amazing view, your attention to detail and your ability to appreciate all blessings is so inspiring.
Love road tripping and camping there. And same, not once have I been able to get a reservation at Kirk Creek! Someday! Haha. Ut ive been lucky to get a walk up site a few times at Plaskett Creek a little more south. Still beautiful camping🏕️
I'm jealous! Awesome views.
Love your video and especially love this one. Big Sur is one of my most favorite places in the world. I’m also a nurse and back in the 70’s I’d drive there after our swing shift in the Bay Area with a couple of girlfriends and we tent camped. Setting up a tent at 2am was always interesting. We had so much fun and met some great people. Thanks for the memories. ❤️
Nice to see you love it with your Airstream i allways won't one to be main, i travel all over the west and east coast and see more of your nice country Canada and US so i dream a bit with your journy, take care and snuggel your lovely Husky
So beautiful!!
Am single alone camper also with my dog😃lived and worker out there but never with my trailer as I just purchased in Feb last year. Haven’t gone very far from my home base in NM at present. Hope to go out there soon( with my dog)
Wonderful hiking tips of your trip! Thanks Sarah
A great video! Beautiful scenery, good information and inspiring! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing Sarah!
Beautiful scenery! Thank you for taking us along!
Love the video’s keep up the great work very proud of you
Loved your video and Husky💝🐾
This was a real pleasure. Thank you.
Absolutely beautiful scenery, thank you so much ❤
Wow...great sights and view!!!
Great video. You crack me up,which is nice since I am watching over my morning coffee. Good way to start my Saturday.
Good to see you back. Safe Travels ❤️❤️❤️❤️
A travel trailer IS an RV. You must have meant 'motorhome.' Yes, a travel trailer is the best option (or 5th wheel for those with pickup trucks) as you have a vehicle to use without having to tow it...and if you have an engine problem your whole home isn't in the shop. And your dog is gorgeous! Anyway, hats off to you for undertaking buying, towing and living in an RV alone. Safe travels.
I love everything about this video! I haven’t been to that area in years, and it is so beautiful!
This video was soooo good! Comprehensive, vibey, real- I loved it!
Highway 1. Memories. Thanks for a great vid. 👍
Beautiful video. Thank you for sharing your experience ❤ it's inspiring
Your videos are great and very helpful for any new owner. Most things can be very intimidating but your videos make things seem much more manageable. Keep the videos coming.
The views along the PCH are so beautiful and calming.
Enjoying your videos very much! I hope you continue with them, even though they are a lot of work! Nice to see Rue content in your home. :)
Grew up in Carmel and spent a lot of my childhood weekends hiking and camping in Big Sur.. Those views, they never get old!!
Your videos are so chill and enjoyable!! Subscribed. Thanks for the content.
Very nice episode! I'm glad you had a great trip. I'm envious--I'm picking up my airstream from being serviced next Tuesday. Good luck in finding a spot at your next destination.
WOW! Fantastic views of the Pacific Ocean. The beauty of Big Sur is beyond words. Fabulous video.
Love your video! We just went there about the same time, but still enjoyed watching your vdo. Great vibes!!!
Very nice! Just subscribed and looking forward to following along on tour journey! Blessings!
Thank you so much, Sarah. Your video format, dialogue, site information and what you loved about Big Sur was a great experience. As I grew up in the Monterey area, dry camped and showed my kids what I loved made this area special. I truly hope people come down to see all wonder, however respect nature by cleaning up after themselves and not to trample nature. Thank you for sharing.
Great video Sarah! The views you captured were absolutely stunning. Being a new Air Streamer myself I love that you asked for help in backing into that difficult site. I've found that people just want to assist and I've learned to just ask - way less stressful and you meet the most amazing people! Good luck on your trip north and be sure to head over to Montana when your work on the coast has ended. Tons of beautiful places to hit and not many people. It's a nomads paradise! Cheers and hi to Rue!
I’m very proud of you! A lot of the time I’m a solo camper/backerupper myself and sometimes it’s not easy but just keep holding that head high like you’re doing and remember everyone of us RVer’s had to learn. Safe travels to you!! 👍😁
Great video Sarah. They are very helpful. I'm preparing for hitting the road with my dog and an Airstream.
Really nice video. Good job.
Sarah! keep up the great video work, you becoming a natural. You and Rue stay safe on your journeys 😎🐶
I'm glad to see Rue is willing to share her new Airstream with you...she looks real "settled in".
Great video! Beautiful scenery! My last trip to Carmel was spent in a parking lot replacing a wheel bearing on my Airstream. Fun!
Sarah, your smile says it all! Great video, thanks for including the doggie information. We too travel with our 🐶 and it's nice to hear the area pet tips. I'm looking forward to your next video 👍🏻
Big Sur is such a rare magical place. I would go often, solo, on Spring break while in school, and it definitely filled my heart and soul. Thank you for taking us on your adventures, Sarah!
Glad your enjoying yourself. I remember the video when you pick up your airstream.
We moved from the Bay Area to the east coast and just checked out outer banks, not FL beaches yet. But we are so grateful that the water temperature is so much higher that my kids and I enjoyed playing in the water for a few hours any day in the past June. And absolutely no flies or algae on the beach just all kinds of beautiful seashells. CA beaches are absolutely beautiful for sightseeing or running the ocean side trials, but unfortunately much less activities for us to do, even in hottest months.
Awesome vid
head east!!! Nice video work/editing. Cheers
This video just solidified my plan on stopping in Big Sur on my journey from WA state to Southern California!

Funny enough - I’m doing the opposite and heading up that way! Are you from WA, or just traveling through?
Best of luck with your next assignment. Oregon beaches are awesome!
Love the video and your dog is awesome! My fur buddy is 1/2 husky . Such amazing dogs😉
Big Sur is absolutely wonderful and you captured its essence beautifully. You also get an A+gold star on your 180 back-up to park your AS! Either one of us would even now, after 20 years of towing our AS, need guidance to do what you did. You and Rue are doing some lovely adventuring. While we were in CA over the last two weeks, we experienced some of the winds you spoke about. Last Thursday on the way home to Texas, between Flagstaff and Socorro, NM we experienced sustained winds in the mid-40 mph range with gusts to 64 mph! We were so thankful for our Hensley hitch on our little molded fiberglass trailer. We have one on our 30’ AS Classic too and wouldn’t pull with anything else. It is totally worth the price! Stay safe out there. Thanks so much for sharing!
Stayed at Big Sur River Inn a few years ago. I remember how good and pure the air smelled. I want to be on the road like you!
We love what you’re doing Sarah, keep making great informative videos Smooth roads and fast Wi-Fi 😂😂!! We also have an Airstream. We’re subscribing, excited about future adventures. We definitely want to go visit, the west coast and upload more videos. Home-base is in Florida.
Thanks for the video. I just found your channel. The Big Sur area is on my bucket list. I had a TT but now have a Minni Winnie and will pull a car, so I can cruise without the RV. Looking forward to following your adventures.
It was very nice to come across your channel today. My wife and I are new to the travel trailer camping scene. We are on the East Coast and are planning our first shake down trip in two weeks. I have really enjoyed watching your vlogs!
Thank you for the video's. I am so jealous as I live in the North of England. Have good day my dear
Totally f'n awesome, excuse my french!.. will have to drive the PCH next time I visit California... Looks so great, enjoy the adventure!
Stayed at this campground in the same exact spot a couple of weeks ago. I needed help backing in as well. 😀
Love your adventures … I’m retired and almost 80 was a photojournalist for 50 years but before that I was a nurse … keep enjoying your travels you are an inspiration )
Hi Sarah, I so enjoyed your videos🤗 I take my Yorkie dog Margo with me when I vacation too. I don’t yet have a camper, but I long for a SCAMP camper. Finding dog friendly places to stay can be a challenge. Glad Rue got to vacation and adventure with you! I’m a subscriber and look forward to your adventures ❤
Wonderful video! You're a good storyteller! I am an Epic EMR trainer and used to train nurse travelers. Enjoy your adventures!
aw so glad to have found your channel :) ....and my dog is called Roo!
Hi Sarah! I'm just so impressed! Really appreciate all your learning curve tips. I don't have any to offer you except despite what you may have heard, there are many wonderfully kind, helpful people out there willing to help. I was a travelling ultrasound tech many years ago, my husband, cat and dog accompanied me. We went to the same camp site in Big Sur as you, although we slept in the back of a Tacoma truck. Wishing we would of thought of purchasing a travel trailer, very envious. Enjoy your mobility!
Great video! I dream of doing this. I also have a Husky, named Shadow. We love to explore. Have a blessed day.
Hi Sarah you sure have a Great video lots to see and do both you and Rue are looking like you both have grown to fit the Air stream I'm super happy for you both 🏕
We were right across the river from you in the cabins, Sarah....its a pretty amazing place...nowhere else in California like it :)
Ten years ago on my first trip out to Big Sur we stayed at the same camp ground and on the way went to elephant seal beach. Did a couple of the same hikes. So fun to see it again. My sister in law lives in Los Osos and we drove up from there. So beautiful!
Nice videos. Your airstream looks perfect for you and Rue. Curious to what you do with Rue when your working. I have two dogs and would love to go to work on the road with my travel trailer and two dogs. Looking for ideas that aren’t really expensive. Thanks and enjoy the good moments 💕
Great video Sarah, your lovely, smiley face make me happy 😊 (Not in a creepy internet stalker way, in a "I'm a mom and I like happy kids way"!) Looking forward to your next adventure.
Congratulations on your getting your Airstream and starting a new journey. Just a tip that might be good...a Garmin InReach is relatively inexpensive and a great piece of safety equipment for solo hikers and campers of the more backwoods inclination. It is a two-way satellite communication device that sends and receives SMS, emails, SOS,, plus up to the hour weather info...not to mention being a second GPS device as a backup for a phone. It will work anywhere on earth (at the poles? not sure) with a clear view of the sky.

@@NomadicSarah As far as I know, the only other competitor is Iridium Go...which has it's own pro's and con's. But, StarLink is coming, and, in my opinion, it will change the world: by making every place on the planet data-aware.
Another most excellent report on your airstream travels Sarah. I’m a PT and wanted to be a traveler when I graduated but instead settled into a long career working for the Federal government. But when I retire (soon) I’ll give hooking up with a travel company and using a travel trailer to reach my destinations serious consideration because of your informative and very well communicated videos. I look forward to seeing more of your adventures with Rue!
I always find myself smiling during your videos. Backing up will come. Always watch the overhead! Big pat-pat for Roo (Rue?)
Nice fire, ready to chill and relax then Neighbors kids screaming , totally cracking me up!
Big Sur is one of the most magical, awe inspiring, calming, and freaking expensive place I ever been to. I can't wait to get back, but I want to check out Yosemite first, lol!
also amazing boondocking in Oregon and Washington....but hard to find with good cell service. Campendium is your friend for sure. We had a great time upstream from Brookings - camping on the river beach. There's also another river camping spot up by the hoh rainforest. for full hookups, we stayed south of portland right off the freeeway and it was a friendly long term park. We also stayed in a beautiful but expensive park northeast of Seattle. good luck on your adventures!
Come to Idaho ! We live in central Idaho near the Salmon River . We have a hospital here small but Er is busy and they do surgery ,deliver babies etc. Steele Memorial hospital , Salmon Id .famous for boating, hiking ,,biking etc .
Look towards New Mexico. Health care is very needed here. We also have a very beautiful. and exciting landscape that makes RVing fun.
Love it!
No doubt the best part of the California coast, I spend lots of time in the Cambria area and the rugged point restaurant and gardens is a favorite stop….
very interesting info about what it's like to live in an airstream and the reality of this lifestyle. Being in Europe, I feel I would be stuck into camping areas all the time. It's definitely worth it to visit North America and Canada with an airstream for extra confort with animals. New subscriber 🤩👍
"Every year around the winter solstice, for just a couple of days a beautiful light show happens at the Keyhole Arch. Right before sunset, the sun will dip down right in the center of the arch. On a clear evening with a low tide, the angle of the mid-winter sun allows for a stunning natural glow."
You just need a parking tool from Germanie to get yor Sirstream easy parkt with a remot controller so easy and cool to have, grest places i love it when i was in the 80this in the US, nice memorys, take care and have fun with your great Husky, regards from Switzerland👍😅
Check out the Lake Superior region someday. There are traveler jobs, campgrounds and May thru October it is spectacular!

Awesome, will do! Thank you Thomas!
I look forward to future videos and you becoming more secure regarding bookdocking. Once you install an adequate solar system, electric power is off the table as a concern. With the ability to drive to town to refill a propane bottle, water becomes the only limiting factor...fresh and used. My favorite area to boondock is along Owens River Road just north of Mammoth.
Awesome
Hi Sarah, I just subscribed to you so I am looking forward to seeing more! If you're ever near DuluthMN/BayfieldWI bring your airstream and Roo, you would love visiting the Apostle Islands!
You can try the Marina Green Boulevard, there were several RV's parked during the pandemic and sometimes you will see them. Day time parking nearby Crissy field is possible until 10:00PM. Other sites Golden Gate Trailer park $40/day ( It has all the facilities you need) and San Francisco RV Resort: $35/day.Since you have an SUV you can easily drive around in the city for your groceries, there is a Safeway on Marina Green Boulevard.
Im looking forward to your next placement area and the adventure! #futuretravelingspeechtherapist
Hi Sarah . Loved the video . Thank you for sharing your experience. I’m old so i do not boondock . I have come accustom to comforts while camping . But i do envy all that do boondock. You stay safe , enjoy your travels..

I don’t know how old you are, but I am 52 & plan to start boondocking in 3 years, once I’ve changed my income stream. It’s never too late. I’m a woman alone & I think I’ll be able to do it! If I could, you could too. Highly recommend a firearm & a big dog. Or pepper spray & a walking stick if you’re not comfortable with firearms. If you just stick with the amenities, I still wish you happy adventuring!!! 😊

@@stargirlofantares9053 your very sweet. Thank you for the vote of confidence. I am turning 61 , and I’m thinking about it but very hesitant . V.E.R.Y…… . I will continue to follow many sites and watch the adventures that campers share and once I’m jealous enough and have learned the in’s & out’s , i just may. I love the Airstream . I can picture every morning looking through the panoramic view of windows while making breakfast. Those airstreams are awesome . Cheers to dreams coming true ☕️!
Hi Sarah, Love your videos. I think over the years people have passed down sometimes incorrect information on types of RV's and that misinformation has just kind of evolved into RV slang. So let me help by giving a few simple definitions which I hope will help you and your viewers. Let’s first talk about what an RV actually is. An RV simply stands for "Recreational Vehicle." It is a general term for a Travel Trailer, Camper, or Motor Home which includes living quarters designed for accommodation. Travel Trailer = A trailer used to camp in. Travel trailers can be pulled directly from behind a vehicle using a trailer hitch or can be towed with a special hitch called a "5th wheel hitch." This unique hitch is installed into the bed of a truck directly over the rear wheel area. Since this travel trailer has an extension for this type of hitch it has been given the nick name of "5th Wheel." Next is the Camper = A unit that sits in the back of a pickup truck. Last is the Motorhome = A drivable vehicle that is used to camp in. I hope this helps. Happy RVing
Awesome video! I just love you! You’re so positive & upbeat no matter what gets thrown your way. I hope to do what you’re doing in 3 years (tough waiting, but I have to change the whole way I make income) & I’m positive I’ll be referencing back to your videos. I’ve not seen another vlog like yours, where someone is just starting out on their journey. I’m so glad I found you!! I’m in Oregon & there are a lot of campgrounds. Start booking as soon as you can if this is where you end up. It’s not as busy since Covid, but since that’s not really a concern for most people anymore, you’re right. It might be busier again. I live 1 hour from the beach one way and an hour & a half from Mt Hood the other way. The best of all worlds. Steer clear of Portland , as it’s very dangerous right now. Extremely high crime. Sad. Anyway, I’m not yet familiar with boondocking spots in my own state, for a home on wheels, but I’m sure there are tons of short term places. If I hear of any long term places with hookups, I’ll let you know. Happy travels! Is it Rue or Roo? Take care & be safe!! 🥰

Thank you so much for the advice!! I’d love to book ahead of time, but I’m apprehensive to lock in an RV spot before I secure a job in a certain area. It’s one of those things I’ll have to figure out as I go. Thanks for the heads up about Portland. I’m not a big city girl anyways, but will still make it a pit stop at some point just to check it out. And it’s Rue! Thanks for your support! 😊
