Airplane Medical Emergency | WE COULDN'T LAND! | Wednesday Checkup

WATCH ME IN THE HOSPITAL (VLOG): • Day In The Life Of A D...
Well, this flight was exciting, to say the least! Luckily it was a learning experience for both me and Matt! Whenever you have an airplane medical emergency doctors do have an ethical but no legal obligation to help. After this event, I thought it might be nice to do a dedicated video to Airplane Medical Emergencies and in general what is expected of doctors and passengers. If you're game for that please let me know in the comments!
Thanks, Defranco for the shoutout! Check out his channel here: / philipdefranco
Link to Daily Mail article: www.dailymail.co.uk/health/ar...
If you have an idea of something you want me to cover in-depth, please let me know because I take your requests seriously. We will be back with more Doctor Reacts Series & Responding to Comments so please submit more names of shows/episodes & questions you'd like for me to watch. Love you all!

It's honestly crazy to me that people thanked you for not diverting the plane. I was on a plane one time where a guy had a stroke and the plane had to make an emergency landing and I was just glad that the guy was okay. Sure, it took longer for us to get to our destination, but that doesn't matter. When the guy walked off of the plane himself, everyone on the plane cheered for him.

It is not necessary to know what the emergency is about!!! They did not divert the flight even when somebody was having anaphylaxis in the plane. So for me, if the plane needs to land somewhere between it means that we just saved a life!!! And even having the idea that somebody thanks you not diverting the plane feels crazy and super selfish. Nobody does make those decisions lightly!

I noticed how he was so honest with this story... how nervous he was when realizing how serious the situation could get, that he was looking up KZread videos to see how to perform the surgery if needed... there was no humble bragging, no self promotion (the pointing to other videos is expected) and in fact, he may save more lives by calling attention to the problem of airlines not having EpiPens in the firstaid kits. One of my brother's best friends had a medical emergency on a flight after "cold symptoms" suddenly turned much worse. Unfortunately, there was no one like Dr. Mike on board to help him and the pilots decided an emergency landing was not needed because he seemed stable enough to them. He wound up going into sepsis which could not be reversed in the hospital they finally sent him to upon finishing the flight. He lived long enough for his parents to see him, though he was not conscious, and then he died. He was in his early thirties, a beloved mathematics professor, his disabled brother's only friend, a gifted athlete, a wonderful friend, and the only one who could have given his parents grandchildren. He was one of the kindest and most brilliant people I have ever known. Friends, students and colleagues from around the world sent letters upon his death, which were compiled into a big binder and given to his parents at his funeral. He had such an incredibly bright future ahead of him. Along with him, the future he intended to give his parents of grandkids and a daughter-in-law to comfort and assist them in old age, of nephews and nieces to lift his brother's isolation, was also lost. His parents live in my neighborhood and all the places where their kids and my brother used to play, in the tree fort and basketball court they built, the sandpit with child-sized construction equipment, the garden, and so on, are all empty. The whimsical math toys he made for fun are unused. His brother doesn't come to visit anymore and his parents rarely go on the walks they used to take together every evening. The airline never gave them so much as an apology.

Doctor Mike, I don't know which airline you traveled on, but in Europe practically all airlines have epipens on board, they are located in the first aid kit, and yes, the flight attendants are trained to know how to use them. They are also trained to identify different medical conditions, such as angina, heart attack, stroke, shock, and many others, as well as treat them within what is possible. Flight attendants also learn basic life support and how to use a defibrillator. They even need to know how to deliver a baby. In a medical emergency, the first step is to ask passengers if there is a medically qualified person on board. Usually there is a doctor, nurse or paramedic among the passengers, but if this does not happen, it is the flight attendants who provide help to the person. They are also responsible for deciding whether to make an emergency landing, passing this information on to the pilots. That's how things work at every airline I've worked for to date. Happy flights! ;-)

I have a non-lethal allergy to nuts (it's generally just a really bad time, but I don't need to go to the ER or anything) and once on a trip the passenger nearby me was chomping down Snickers. It was not a fun flight but luckily it was only an hour. I can't imagine how much it must suck to have a serious allergy, especially on airplanes.

i had this same allergy a few years ago. I remember that I would constantly and inexplicably get hives-usually on my head after I'd fallen asleep, waking me up in a fit of scratching. Eventually, I had a bad enough reaction (my back was pretty much a giant hive) that my parents decided to take me to an allergist. They did their bunch of tests, and that's when I discovered I had the allergy (along with a mild grass allergy). Funnily enough, I remember the exact tick that gave me the allergy: it dug its stupid little head into a not-so-pleasant location during a Boy Scout camping trip. After, like, two years I grew out of it.

There is a worldwide shortage so our airline is only just getting them as we're incredibly low on the priority pile. Training isn't the problem as we get annual training and it's just added into our curriculum, we also get important updates which we have to read before we begin our duty and the epipen addition was one for us. It took 10 seconds to learn "blue to sky, orange to thigh".

I remember in nursing school that I learned the mechanism of action in panic attacks is that you get a huge adrenaline surge and that you’re body goes into fight or flight mode. I feel so much better knowing how my panic attacks work and learning about them and how my body responds to them.

You are a true Hero! I'm in the medical field, and I knew exactly where he was coming. I know ACLS, and know management of Severe Allergic Reaction, and This you knew that you needed to do, and did it! As the story unfolded, I could picture myself in an aircraft, having to manage something like that. ESPECIALLY the issue with No Eppi Pen. I mean, Just like you said, the Dose for a Cardiac arrest is MUCH higher than the Dose You were going to need. Because in cardiac arrest, you give 1 mg of 1 to 10,000 Epinephrine, and you repeat that Q3-5 minutes. So 1 mg of 10,000 for an Extreme Allergic Reaction would in most circumstances cause Ventricular Tachycardia, Ventricular Fibrillation, and other Arythmias.

Epipen's are only $123 using goodrx.com without health insurance. Not only should they carry it but that is less than one plane ticket per plane per year. Also they have to have health insurance making the price go down. Also I worked for a camp that go a discount for buying 5 a year so buying in bulk will make the price go down even farther. No excuses if they spit that cost between 50 people that would add less than $3 to each ticket for 1 flight a year. Also Epipen training could be done with CPR training in about 10 minutes and a practice Epipen is $20 .
