Airfix have just released their anticipated New Tooled 1/72 Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vc which was announced back in January. Yesterday I received the kit and I will unbox it and show you what you can expect to find from Airfix's latest offering.
First impressions are the options to build this Spitfire in many different ways. With upgrades to the Vokes filter, the manifolds to the three piece canopy.. This is a very well thought out Kit.. With the decals straight from the Cartograf print factory, you will have a great time building this kit.

Described as arguably the most effective ‘stop-gap’ aircraft the RAF ever introduced, the Spitfire Mk.V combined the additional power of the Rolls Royce Merlin 45 engine with the original Mk.I/II airframe (plus a number of design improvements already developed for the proposed future Mk.III) and proved to be more than a match for the latest Luftwaffe fighter. With the increased production capacity offered by the new Castle Bromwich shadow factory, Spitfire Mk.V fighters were produced at a spectacular rate, with this interim variant going on to be the most produced version of the Spitfire, with almost 6,500 aircraft manufactured. Seeing service in every theatre the Allies contested the war, Spitfire Mk.Vs fought in the home defence role, above the deserts of North Africa and the jungles of the Far East.
The introduction of the Spitfire’s ‘C’ or ‘Universal Wing’ was something of an engineering triumph and not only provided the fighter with a wing capable of supporting several different weapons configurations, but also cut down on labour and manufacturing time. The new wing strengthened the undercarriage, angling the main gear slightly further forward, making the notoriously challenging ground handling of the Spitfire a little more manageable for pilots.

FYI: On early Merlin Spitfires through the Mk.V, and including the Griffon powered Mk.XII, the small fairing under the left wing contains the oil cooler. The large rectangular fairing under the right wing houses the radiator. On Merlin Spitfires after the Mk.V, and all other Griffon Spitfires and Seafires, the engines had two-stage superchargers with an intercooler. This required a new radiator under the wing so the left wing got a new radiator and housing to be symmetrical with the right wing. The deep fairing under the nose is the carburetor air intake with the tropical Vokes Vee filter installed. This helped keep sand and dust from being drawn into the engine. There was a second type of filter housing developed as a stopgap at the Aboukir Maintenance Facility in Egypt. Appropriately enough, it is typically referred to at the Aboukir filter; the Tamiya 1:72 Mk.Vb included this as an option. The other large curved fairing that goes on the underside of the aircraft is a 90 gallon slipper tank. There were other tank sizes: 30, 45, and 170 gallons. These tanks could be jettisoned in flight as they came with a significant performance penalty.

The MkV was a very unlucky version of the great Spit family, it had to face the formidable FW190A with heavy losses, until the more powerful MKIX arrived. It's a good kit, and the choose btw the wings is interesting.

What! you failed to mention that the box art; was available as a poster FREE with November's Airfix magazine! Mine is framed and on the wall. Might get the kit to, when I find out about the wing options.....

I buy the magazine online thru pocket books app so didn't see the poster.. Glad you had it framed. Strange one with the wings.. looks like two options are available..
I remember, as you mentioned, people complaining about “not another Spitfire kit” and couldn’t understand what the complaining was about, the Mk.Vc was one of the most widely produced variants of the Spitfire yet it was one that very few kit manufacturers bothered with. Looking at this kit it looks like they’ve included enough bits to allow modellers to build the Mk.Vc in many of its iterations, full span or clipped wings, tropical or standard carb. intake (I know the “Aboukir” intake used to be available as a resin add on), so this kit would allow modellers to build half a dozen different Mk.Vc’s no two the same.

I think the issue was since filming most modellers have more of a want of different planes, hence the sigh from modellers. you are right that this spit was one of the most used in WW2 and deserved to be retooled.. Thank you for commenting.

I would love to see a comparison of the two Airfix kits. If you want to learn about the Spitfire pick up Haynes book on the spitfire you can pick up from the works or their websight for cheap.

The various parts under the Spitfire are as follows On the fuselage line you had the Volkes Air filter The large lumpy part is a conformal fuel tank The small long part is an oil cooler and the square part is the radiator

Thank you for sharing tis preview! As for the kit itself I'm really disapointed with this, so called "novelty". Is this really worth of the 21st century technology? I remember late 1990s when Italeri released their effort and in same aspects it was superior to this one. Plastic is soft as well as details and its also missing bomb racks and bombs. The best part are the decals. If one looks at Arma Hobby Hurricane kits and compare them to Airfix 1:72 line of WW2 fighters ...
