Re the gaps at wing route and filter, ive just received my two, and started the build on one. When I got to these so called 'problematic' areas, i didnt have an issue, all thats needed is a bit of pressure, liquid cement and patience and i got no gaps, and no raised levels. I didnt need one ounce of filler. So i think this is a little unfair as its possibly the mould or simply user error when cleaning up the parts. Dont forget that you need to also apply upwards pressure towards the root to get the dihedral.

Fair enough. I'm just trying to be realistic, it's a brand new 2020 tooled kit, I'd expect next to perfect parts at least. But your point is perfectly justified as well!

@@ModellingWeekly Airfix kits with the softer plastic will never be razor sharp hence the tolerances are greater than say Hasegawa or even Eduard. This is why they need a little more TLC. Bit of advice on the painting, add a little more thinner to stop the bumpy texture finish you've got. Also if you can, get some Flory clay wash as its much easier than pin washes as its water based and leaves a nice flat finish. They can also be used as pigments if left to dry in a mixing lid.

I've had about 4 of the Mk1 Spitfire kits from Airfix, 3 have been great but one had huge gaps and I had nothing but trouble with the fit on some other areas. It does seem to be hit and miss so I totally feel your pain. Yes they are cheap but they should be consistent.

Just bought the kit and was highly alert because of your comments on the wingroot gaps. Luckily in my case it was sufficient just not to press the fuselage halves together too much, so no filler needed! Thanks anyway for your very nice tutorial on this pretty new kit.

You can use super glue gel as filler as well. Its doesn't shrink like putty does. You just have to be careful sanding it, as its harder than the surrounding plastic.

Beautiful work. I paint mini figures and have been looking to dabble in model aircraft and cars. It looks like a lot of the techniques would transfer over well.

Great work. Its come out great despite the problems. Nice bit of weathering too

Watching a build video and drinking an Iron Maiden lager. I would love a series of beginner videos containing hand painting. I've just got back into the hobby after 36 years and it will be awhile before a commit to an airbrush. Oh and puttying and sanding are my least favorites.

Yep. Filling is my pet hate. I am definitely going to make some tutorials/guides in the future, hopefully pretty soon! Despite having an airbrush, sometimes I do miss the calming experience of using a brush.

"Vallejo"..... three syllables...."Val_lay_ho". So many YT presenters have trouble with this. I just acquired this kit, but haven't built it yet. It's interesting seeing Airfix's evolution over my five-plus decades of model building. This video gives me a good heads-up on the few problems of the kit.

Glad you found the vid helpful! :D It's actually a common misconception that that's the correct way to pronounce Vallejo - it's not. In Spanish, a double 'l' is pronounced as a 'y'. A 'v' is a 'b'. The way I pronounced it was the correct way, I come from a Spanish background so it annoys me when people try to correct my pronunciation of it lol.

"Vallejo (/vəˈleɪ(h)oʊ/ və-LAY-(h)oh; Spanish: [baˈʎexo] ba-YEH-ho) is a city in Solano County, California and the second largest city in the North Bay region of the Bay Area." Seems either way is correct, but what I heard in the video sounded.... off.

Your build is absolutely spot-on, even despite all the issue the kit has. Why in this day and age are there fit issues and ejector pun marks on the visible sides of parts?! It’s so easy to see why companies like eduard have a better rep when this is literally the “best” that Airfix can produce

@@jvengence Exactly - some kits are absolutely beautiful, I just wish they made everything just AS beautiful, if not nicer.

From what I have seen, lots of 1/72 airfix aircraft have gaps at the roots of the wings, especially the ww2 fighter planes. Great job on the kit, it looks superb!

That is true, but I've never seen them this big out of all the spits I've built before. The camera may not give them justice, but in real life the gaps were huge. Glad you like the end result though!

Hi, enjoyed your video. I’ve in the process of priming my model and I didn’t have any gaps at the wing roots but I did have a very slight gap under the front of the one piece canopy, I just put that down to the cleats parts shrinking while cooling. Just made some notes of colours you used. Thanks for sharing.

I just finished mine in the SAAF colours. Didn't have a problem with the wing roots on mine but the landing gear was VERY flimsy. This was also my first 1/72 Spitfire and damn they are small haha. I have a new found respect for these 1/72 builds and the detail you've put into yours

You really did an outstanding job on this one! Nice to see you progress through your videos. The hiccups you mentioned, don’t show at all in the finished view. Only one thing I noticed though; I think you should dilute your paint just a tad more to get more even spray patterns. The brown came out very smooth, but the black, white and gloss varnish came out very sputtering and pebbly. Just keep building, enjoying and learning along! 👍🏼

Will do! Yes, a few people have been saying to dilute a bit more! I am actually planning to slowly transition to lacquer paints, as I have heard they go down much smoother and are a lot more resilient. We'll see!

@@ModellingWeekly Oh yes, lacquers are awesome! I exclusively use them for spraying and only resort to acrylics for finer brush painting. Dilute your Gunze or Tamiya 50-50 (or even thinner) with Mr. Leveling Thinner and you’re all set! 👍🏼

The kit may not be of THE perfect standard, but YOUR video is fabulous! Thank you for this demonstration!

This review was very well-executed, as was the build of the Spitfire. I am glad you pointed out the failings of the kit (those gaps do seem extreme!) as well as its assets. Not a fan of PE myself, I'm glad Airfix has found plastic solutions that work in-scale - you and I disagree here, but by pointing it out to me, well, that's another plus-mark for this kit. Finally, as enamored as I am by foreign planes in US service (though I'm guessing that, in this case, it might be an RAF aircraft in US markings for Torch), I like the fact that this kit is offered with American markings - saves me the hassle of finding after-market decals. Bottom line - KUDOS!

I'm just building the Airfix 1/24th Spitfire Mk 1. I know you can't really compare 50 year old kits with modern ones but the cockpit of the modern 1/72 is more detailed than the 1/24. Modelling technology has come a long way.

It’s interesting to compare this Airfix Spitfire Mk.Vc with the one Airfix released back in the ‘70s which was basically the Spitfire Mk.Vb with a new set of wings and tropical filter included as extra parts.

I’ve enjoyed watching a few of your vids recently and will be subscribing after typing up this, so well done! Well done also, on short tripping some of the work and creating a shorter and better video build! I particularly like this format that you’ve used and hope that you stick with it in the future. Re the wing gaps: I noticed that you experienced this with the Airfix 1/72 P40B and now with this? I have both kits and have made the P40B, using Mr Hobby liquid putty to fill the gaps...in 1/72 scale the gaps aren’t too onerous for this putty but another modeller recommended using some stretched sprue, fitted into the gaps with tweezers and Tamiya extra thin cement (thus melting the stretch sprue into place)....When I build the Spit, I’ll give the sprue fix a whizz and report back! Re the undersides blue.....it’s too dark but it’s your kit and you build ‘em better than I do...so I’ll shut up....😂😂😂 Subscribing now.....keep em coming! 👍🏻👍🏻

When you fill pin ejector marks, put some putty in a small plastic milk carton cap, add some liquid glu an mix it to thin it out like paint the apply it with a small paint brush right where you need it. It makes a neater job and easier to sand

I like watching your videos and making models too! I have an airbrush and do most of my painting with that but it’s relatively cheap like my compressor and for my birthday I am considering upgrading and wondered what compressor you use for your models? Keep up the good work!!

Glad you like the videos! The compressor that I have always used and loved is the AS-185 from Everything Airbrush- unfortunately, it's now discontinued! I have heard that Sparmax compressors are very good, though if you want an accurate recommendation I would HIGHLY recommend chatting to the guys at www.everythingairbrush.com/ - they'll be a lot more helpful than me! 😂

Hey just came across your question and thought id chip in, i bought a Bartsharpe compressor and i have been very impressed with it, not super loud and it is to my mind very well built. i got a cheap airbrush from them aswell for basecoating and its a fair bit better than i was expecting though not as good as my patriot. worth giving them a look

Those wing root gaps. I don't know why they do it (on some models, but not others) where they tell you to bond the wing top halves onto the lower wing piece before the fuselage. I done that once, never again. Doing an Airfix Bf109 E3 just now, had seen people have issues with wing root gaps... lo and behold, instructions say bond wing uppers to lower before fuselage. Nuh uh. I done it fuselage onto lower wing, THEN the wing upper halves. Cannot tell you how nice and adjustable the fit was. The wing root join looked like any other panel line. Im going to grab one of these and give it a go! Cheers for the video buddy!

I just got this model today

Wing root gap usually = incorrect dihedral: pull the wing tips up and push down on the fuselage whilst the glue cures. Probably help the fit of the radiator intake too 🤗

Very nice video. Seems Airfix can do decent kits lately (other then some fit issues and ejection pin marks) - however, I will wait for Eduard kit that is due in 2021/2022. Two nitpicks to you build (sorry for those): If possible, push the exhausts into the fuselage way more (check any spitfire Mk I/II/V photos for reference) I would suggest using another green for UK planes interior (it should be gray-green, not the US yellow-green type)

Both nitpicks are entirely reasonable. The exhaust puzzled me as well, they didn't seem to want to go in any more, despite removing the locator pins. And yeah, the interior green isn't good. I need to buy some extra paints!

Very nice indeed. As mentioned below, the aerial wire is unnecessary - the aircraft had VHF radio and the aerial was enclosed in the mast itself.

ell, tis is Airfix! Sometimes you buy 3 same kits and one or two have some very disturbing issues! I had three P-40s, bought from the same shop at the same day and two of them had some very bad molding marks! By the way, great built! I just got mine and after i finish my Hurricane mki (Airfix!!) i will start it! It's gonna be made in Greek colors, as it was flying in ww2!

A "spreader bar' is a common solution to wing root gaps. Piece of sprue (or 2), cut to length to spread the fuselage halves wide enough to take out the gap. Assuming of course you don't need to push up the wings for correct dihedral.

Hi, nice build - you said that you didn't manage to find a shade for the blue. Try vallejo 71.108, UK Azure Blue, it's the exact shade for the RAF desert camo underside :)

Good result It seems to me that over the years there is now a standard method of painting, all based around decal attachment. But I see an issue as soon as pre decal varnish goes on it creates orange peel effect. This never happened is the good old days of enamel brush painting, but then you had silvering of decals or worse they fell off after a year or so. Can't help thinking a better solution is needed. What that is...no idea

Ah, simply thinning the paint down would help the problem - for this model I was impatient and sprayed straight from the bottle, resulting in this effect. You can also use lacquer paints, which eliminates the effect all together!

Part way through building mine and I agree about the wing roots - disappointing. I'd recommend putting a plastic shim in to support the filler, especially if you use Vallejo or Perfect Plastic - they aren't really strong enough and tend to shrink. The air filter needed a bit of thought but after cutting down the 'key' into the wing I got it down OK and can fix the small gaps with a wipe of filler, so it's not an issue. Definitely needs seatbelts. Overall, I think that Airfix have pitched it right for what they are aiming for. It's not an Eduard kit - the detail isn't as good, but then it goes together nicely. Airfix have gone for ease of build and they've succeeded. Definitely a good weekend build.

great video, i just bought this kit and i'm fairly new to modelling (7 months) so i don't have an airbrush or lots of different tools. I always thought that you have to use like the exact right paint it says or an equavilent tp the humbrol paint colour given in the instructions such as vallejo. but it didnt look like you used the exact colour, so should i not be as up tight with the exact colours? thanks

Funny you should ask about this, someone else was complaining about my colour choice yesterday! The answer is no, you don't need to be tight about colours. In the end it's your model, and you can do what you wish with it. Rivet counters will be all fussy about getting the exact shade, but personally I'm more relaxed. So long as it's near enough right, go for it - and have fun!

@@tomoldaker1268 oh haha, in the hobby rivet counters are what we call people who are intent on getting every detail exactly right - as in, they would count the rivets to make sure it's correct. It's a generally exaggerated term though, as nobody would count each single rivet on a model lol.

Nice work. Except the MKV wouldn't have had the aerial wire from the mast to the fin. The aircraft depicted may have had the IFF aerials from tailplane to fuselage, but this would need to be researched.

this was my first ever kit it was shocking but looking back it was me not the kit

I noticed you were using the Humbrol gloss varnish for priming the model for the decals and for sealing them in before adding your oil pin wash. Is there a certain thickness of the gloss layer that needs to be applied before it is safe for the wash and subsequent removal? I only ask as I also use the Humbrol gloss and when i got to the wash stage the enamel thinner took off the gloss layer and the paint below it, despite using a small amount of the thinner on a cotton bud. Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated, Many thanks.

Hi, that is a very odd problem - The layer of gloss varnish shouldn't need to be too thick: so long as it's fully cured, nothing's getting through that stuff. Though I normally have at least two airbrushed layers applied before any enamel washes. There are a few reasons why your problem may be occurring: 1) The varnish is too thin 2) It hasn't properly cured (Give it 24hrs at least) 3) If applied with a brush, the thickness could be slightly inconsistent, therefore creating thinner weaker areas of the varnish (Try watering it down and painting a couple of layers). 4) The thinner you are using could be too aggressive/not agreeing with something - try using *white spirit* if you are using enamel thinners, and vice versa. You could also try reading around on modelling forums, to see what others have experienced. @@jmxace0155 Happy new year to you too! Thinning the gloss down would definitely be a good idea - if it doesn't work out, you could try using a different enamel thinner for your washes, or maybe even a different gloss coat - I really hope it works out for you!

I use a powerful spray booth, yeah - I don't bother with a respirator, as the Vallejo paints I use are pretty harmless, and the fan is very effective - BUT, I would definitely recommend wearing a respirator anyway, just to be perfectly safe, especially with paints such as Tamiya Acrylics :)

What size nozzle and pin did you use at 7:28 for marking the camp?

You did this Supermarine Spitfire Vc as a USAAC aircraft with the undercarriage down, displayed it as such? What about doing undercarriage up, is the option available as on earlier editions of the Airfix aircraft kits.

In the Supermarine Spitfire Vc's ventral (underside) fuel tank is a 'notch' one can cut, insert the Airfix 1/72nd upright stand, result one Spitfire in 'flying' mode.

Good questions. I have one of those ikea glass cabinets with different layers, though I modified it to have 3 extra glass shelves.

is it possible to get RAF decals for this?

Looking good however a few inaccuracies in the scheme. The roundals and markings of the RAF should of been painted over with a dark brown paint and Painted over with American markings. This is because the spitfire was originally RAF however the Americans were convinced to replace their p40s with spitfires and had to cover up the markings to replace them with their own.

Yeah, I saw that! I forgot to mention it in the video, but I couldn't do the brown roundel as I have literally no way of masking it :(

@@ModellingWeekly try using a decent sized coin and trace around it with a pencil on a post-it note. Carefully cut it out with a modeling knife and apply it on the wings. The sticky strip and some tape on the other side are enough to keep it in place and even get you an ever so slightly fuzzy edge as if it was overpainted with a spray gun in real life. Just my two...er.....one... er....coin. 😉

Model air is truly abysmal paint. That spattering hurts my eyes.

@@ModellingWeekly good choice. Acrylics have their merits, but model air is just terrible. Not sure if you know you can thin model colour with Mr levelling thinner for airbrushing, but full laquer solution is just superior to most acrylics. Great channel btw, nice builds 👍

There's a strong element of fantasy regarding the colours used for the cockpit parts (gunmetal fuselage/wheel wells?) and camo scheme. Xtracolur/ Xtracrylic or WEM produce an authentic Azure Blue as well as desert camo colours. Of course, it's up to the modeller whatever colours they choose to use, but the RAF colours are not simply "open to interpretation" as claimed in the video.

1. I'm sorry you're heartbroken that I used gunmetal instead of aluminium for the interior metal areas. 2. RAF colours varied during the war. Whether it was from sun exposure or other factors, they varied. Full stop. There isn't one exact shade that every single aircraft matched exactly. I think you'll find that I never mentioned 'interpretation' in the video, and that I actually said there are different shades you could use. That's not an interpretation, as an interpretation is opinionated.
