    Thank you man! This video is great source of knowledge for me! About year ago my drunk friend was going to me, and during the trip he find in the trash RC model of Lancaster, about 1.5meter long. And of course he was thinking -oh, what a great gift for my friend! Because it was my birthday. He gave me this scrap. I write scrap, becouse probably this RC plane survived a serious accident. Hull full of damages, lost half tail and probably both wings. Someone try to repair this and build new wings. But he didn't end work and just threw it in the trash. In result I got plane with these all damages with new wings, but without engines nacelles, just raw wings. And now I try repair this bomber. I tried to find any blueprint of mk2, but I find nothing. No problem with data for mk1, or mk3, but for me the prettiest version of this machine is mk2 with radial engines. From your video I find priceless images! Well, I am not going to rebuild this for RC flying, I'll hang it from the ceiling and that's all. Again, thank you!

    Big tip on the Eduard masks - removed the surrounding so you're left with JUST the masks - they are then super simple to take off the mask sheet and you don't damage them... I build an Airfix last year and people commented on the perfect mask work!!

    Nice work. A pleasant way to spend 25 minutes. The 10/6 the kit cost was quite a bit back in the day. I used my 10/- to buy the airfix tommy gun and later the airfix rifle that shot the rubber bullets. I should have kept them because they go for silly money now they are so rare. All my airfix kits were bought at Woolworths and came in the plastic bags. Bit different from what you can buy now.

    I built this one myself a few weeks ago, small issues were 1) Slight warping of the fuselage halves, and an undershot moulding of the front-guns. Luckily this version has an optional turret, so I cut the end off the underside turret guns and glued it to the end of the front gun turret set. Not ideal, but it worked. The newer models seem to suffer warping more than the older kits. I also found the cockpit canopy was a bit awkward to fit the side-windows in.

    @@garys_stuff It was not a great success and kind of a hold-over from the later Manchester variants, only a few early production Mk1`s and a greater number of Mk2`s had them. Most Lancasters just had the mount without the turret and it was faired over in most of the aircraft built as the weight saving was considered to be more useful than an inaccurate weapons mount (the guns in the turret were sighted through a periscope and it was extremely difficult to target anything, particularly at night!). The space when opened up also came in handy for mounting improvised weapons like a single Vickers "K" gun on the Dambuster B1 "Specials" and the H2S radar mount on later production Lanc`s.

    I have two Dogfight Doubles on their way from Airfix right now (Wildcat/Zero and MiG-17/A-4), but there is a big queue forming on my "to do" list! I fancy the Spitfire/Bf-109 Dogfight Double in 1/48th as well...

    The B2 was an interim version during a period when Merlin engines were in short supply. Once that issue was fixed then Merlin equipped Lancs were built again.

    Question: Is it better to paint your kits before building or after??

  • @garys_stuff

    @garys_stuff

    2 жыл бұрын

    Good question. For me it depends on the kit, as I tend to spray paint most of mine and I want to avoid masking as much as I can. It made sense to me to paint the fins of the Lanc separately as they are all-over black, for example, and I like to do what I can before the undercarriage etc goes on. I've seen some amazing work done of kits painted entirely on the sprues and left there for display!

    Whats is your opinion on the quality control of Airfix kits? Personally I've found Airfix to be hit and miss and some of their kits I've built have terrible quality control. Even on their modern kits there is way too much flash on parts and its obvious that there is plastic that has leaked out of their moulds. This is much apparent on smaller parts. I've wanted to build the Airfix Lancaster kit but putting up with all the extra work and time needed to clean up each part has put me off Airfix now. Great build by the way, thank you for the video.

    I did have some under-shot guns on the Wellington Mk.II recently, others have mentioned this as well. I can't say that flash has been much of a problem for me except on the older tools. I do find that they are trying to get an awful lot of accuracy from 1/72 at the expense of being able to get things off the sprue - such incredibly delicate parts at times. But then I guess this means a more accurate kit. The Lancaster I got was not at all bad from a moulding point of view.

    The white is PVC plastic masking tape because it's easier to make it go round curves nicely to do the edges. The yellow is Frog Tape (low tack masking tape) to fill in the gaps!

    can you compare detail level and parts quality to Revell's version of Avro? Is it worth paying little bit more for Airfix?

  • @garys_stuff

    @garys_stuff

    Жыл бұрын

    Sorry but I can't only because I've never made the Revell kit! Purely from looking at the instructions the Revell kit has more bits that many people want - engine details and bombs for the bomb bay - you don't get either with Airfix. But then Airfix seems to do much better with some of the interior detail and the gun mounts are accurate - stuff you can see through the transparencies. I can say the fit and finish of the Airfix kit is very good indeed.

    No, that would be a Lancaster with Merlin engines, I believe she is an actually a Mk.VII. You can get close to it with the Mk.I/III kits Airfix sell although there are some differences in the gun turrets. Kits World do a decal set in 1/72 that has "Just Jane" in it (KW172120).

    The lack of bombs is very disappointing, so much so it has stopped me from buying this kit. I think it is quite shameless of Airfix expecting you to buy the airfield supply diorama just to get the bombs - and a warning, even if you splash out on the supply kit it doesn’t include enough bombs for a full Lancaster load. I will soon receive a 3D printer and one of the projects is to try and find some bombs that I can print - if I’m successful then I will be buying an Airfix Lancaster.

    It is really annoying when so many other kits in the range come with bomb loads (B-17 and Mossie come to mind). The only Lancaster that comes armed is the 617 Sqn Dambusters special!
