Airfix King Tiger [1/76 scale]

Ойындар

In this video I build the 1/76 scale King Tiger tank by Airfix. This is obviously a plastic kit and it's surprisingly quite good. Especially considering how bad some airfix kits can be.
This model was very quick and easy to build and it should paint up quite nicely.
With a tiny bit of work after assembly to fill holes and gaps this could be a really great model.
A big thanks to the people who recommended this kit to me. I enjoyed it!

    I’m working on the exact kit right now! Unfortunately some of the pegs for the wheel to go onto came off so that sucks but still I like air fix and I can’t wait to finish and paint it! Edit: this mode has just been a train wreck, it arrived broken and it has just been incredibly difficult to work with and the gaps on it are insane, it’s probably due to the fact that I am not great at modeling but even then I am considering giving up on this build

    Staple rubber band tracks together and then paint them. This is a good kit to be honest. Cheap and you can build it in a day. I've made a few of them and would recommend them for new modellers. If you want a challenge, then get the flash off the Buffalo!

    I got the same 1/76 King Tiger when I got the duo package of King Tiger vs. Cromwell with paints and such. Both King Tiger and Cromwell were a bit disappointing with the way pieces don't put well together, especially King Tiger with the gap in the front hull (mine is so much worse than yours haha), but for $18 I got on amazon for the two tanks, the paints, and brushes, I think it's totally worth it. Thanks for the video - it gave me reassurance that I didn't screw up on my King Tiger :P

    Odd that you put the tracks on before painting the wheels. Any tips for building a turntable for displaying a model? You modelled the hull machine gun in the hull ball mount. This would be the same machine gun in the AA mount, so you would not have an MG in both positions at once.

  • @HerbertErpaderp

    @HerbertErpaderp

    It's not that odd to have the tracks on before painting, It does make it a little tricker to do, but I've done enough 15mm scale tanks with the tracks and wheels as a solid unit that it's not super hard to paint. I haven't really got any tips for building a display turntable. I don't have the skills to make a motorised one. I bought mine on ebay. I think it's intended for jewelry. It wasn't too expensive. I had a cake decorating turntable too, but I wasn't able to rotate it steadily enough for videos. I had no idea the AA gun was the same as the hull machine gun, though I guess it makes sense. I'd imagine space to be at a premium inside the tank and there probably wouldn't be room to store another MG when it wasn't up on the AA mounting.

    the title says 1/72 whereas the box and description say 1/76. anyway.. Nice kit right?! the reason this is good and the sherman is so.. bad.. is that this kit is fairly new and the tool for the sherman has been round since the early 1960's. Airfix is always a bit hit and miss but the more recent kits are generally pretty good. Coincidentally i just finished painting this King Tiger and it paints up quite well, im quite pleased with how it turned out :)

    There is a way. Scalemates has a large database of models of most manufacturers, with their respective history regarding repackaging, retooling and added parts to the model. For example, here is your (?) Airfix Sherman Caliope: www.scalemates.com/kits/109358-airfix-a02334-sherman-calliope-tank Down there is a timeline you can scroll, sometimes more than one manufacturer has sold the same kit, most times even that is noted in the time line. Have fun :)

    Nice video and a rather nice kit. I really expected worse from Airfix after having built two kits from them.... Really a shame they have rubber band tracks :/ Those hardly ever look good, they're just too "springy" :( Btw, if you want to build an outstandingly excellent tank kit in 1:72, try to find one from the chinese (yeah, not joking here) manufacturer "Flyhawk". They only have a few Pz I and II plus rare french tanks right now but more are said to be coming soon. Hardly anyone knows the manufacturer, but their kits are great, maybe the best I've seen (in this scale at least) yet. You notice it the moment you open the box, it's joy in cardboard. Oh, and.. First :D haha, always wanted to do this lame thing.

    That pistol port part on the side of the turret couldn't be molded as part of the turret because it would cause an undercut in the mold that would prevent the part from releasing from the mold. For a bad Airfix kit, don't get the Panther. For a good one, I have the Matilda II with hedgehog mortars. It looks nice in the box. I built the Airfix Panther and it is bad. I used tracks off of a Fujimi Jagdpanther because the Airfix ones were such crap. I did a ton of scratch built detailing and did a bunch of resin copies of tools and such. Don't ask me why, because I have no idea. Now I have a really crappy Panther with nice details. Oh, the Fujimi tracks broke into little pieces after a year or two because of the solvent based weathering I did. Now I have a really crappy Panther with nice details and tiny bits of crumbled track super glued to the wheels more or less in place.

    Well, I'm an Aussie (though I'm not in Australia) and have built and continue to have a lot of Airfix in my stash. Airfix is a bit hit and miss. Sometimes a good kit can be ruined by a bad issue run. (The Blue box kits from a few years ago are particularly bad - particularly with the tracks). But, I've had more trouble recently with some of the 1/76 Fujimi issues than most of the Airfix kits. But I would not generally buy an old airfix kit that has been re-issued.(If you want a really scary kit try the Fujimi 1/76 105 mm HVSS Sherman. It's horrible). I'm more likely to find an old release of an Airfix kit if I really want it. Sure I might need to replace the decals but at least there will be less flash and the fit will be better. (Their Crusader is quite nice - if you can get an older boxing of one.)
