Airfix Higgins LCVP | 1/72 Scale Plastic Model Kit | Full Build & Review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The landing craft, vehicle, personnel, or LCVP was designed by Andrew Higgins and based on boats used in swamp and marshy areas. Usually constructed from plywood to save weight and cost, but with steel armour in key places, it was capable of ferrying 36 soldiers to shore at about 9 knots. Or alternatively, a jeep with a reduced capacity for personnel. The benefit of the shallow draft of the vessel, along with the front loading ramp meant that it saw use in many landing operations in various theatres of World War 2 following its introduction to service in 1942.

    Thanks for your comments. I try to manage the music as best I can - after the intro it becomes more ambient than anything. I used to do build videos without any music at all, and although people would comment on how they liked that, sadly the videos did not have a big audience. Since adding music the audience has grown, clearly the people who want silent videos are more of a minority. I would do more videos like that in the future though if it really became an issue

    Higgins didn't put a ramp on it initially - it had a pointed front. The first models were in British use from 1940 as the LCP(L) or "R-boat" and Commandos had to hop over the side. It wasn't until 1941 that a ramped version was demonstrated in the US.

    I really enjoyed this post/ build- nice background theme; good editing and some model making hints. No stress..!! I think the result is very good- it's not about how big or complicated the model you build; it's the little bits that you do, to make it look good- dry brush here, some small details there, etc. I agree- it needs some figures to give it some ' movement' - possibly some of Airfix's figures from their soldier sets...? Anyway, very good...!

    Easy for me to be wise after the fact. Maybe spray / brush the inside with the bulkheads / pieces dry fitted to mask areas you want to glue later? wow it looks fabulous and I really like the rust on it. You've made it look so much bigger than it is with all the amazing details, great job. On another note I think I prefer the Revell glue over the Tamiya glue as I have tried both and have found that after a while it becomes hard to get the glue out of the bottle using the included brush in the tamiya glue, although the Revell glue still isn't perfect as I have had some problems with the glue not coming out the needle for the first time using fresh from the store. Can't wait to see your next video! :D

  • @ModelMinutes

    @ModelMinutes

    3 жыл бұрын

    I've had those exact problems! I find that if you put the lid back on the Revell Contacta straight away it prevents the cement from drying in the needle (if it does it becomes a pain to unclog it). But yes, the brush in the tamiya bottle is a little too small to reach the bottom, so when that happens I use an old paintbrush to get the cement out.

    I think this is an old Heller rebox - I got mine when Airfix released the Jeep and trailer kit, and the GMC CCKW 353 truck: both have extremely small crew figures - nearer 1/87 (HO) than 1/76 (OO). The figures on the Higgins boat are just as tiny. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice kit that goes well with the old Airfix LCM [III].

    Now that you have an airbrush, there is no excuse not to use it. :-D It looks like a nice little kit. Buying extra crew for a landing party would make a great little diorama. I am far from being a river counter, but that painting and colours definitely need some extra research before one starts. Even the artwork shows that it's not just grey on the inside.

  • @ModelMinutes

    @ModelMinutes

    3 жыл бұрын

    The box artwork is completely grey on the inside - i painted this kit exactly as per the instructions, and the box artwork makes no indication of any colours. So if there is a failing here, it's on airfix's part. In order to build models you shouldn't have to do research, but I do in my videos to make things a little better. This is a review channel at the end of the day, and I have to make the decision to do or not do things so that people can make an unbiased choice based on my video whether they then go on and buy one for themselves. Also, i've had many requests to still hand paint models, so using an airbrush is going to be completely my choice depending on the kit i'm building

  • @rogueplastic

    @rogueplastic

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@ModelMinutes Feels like you might have missunderstood me there a bit. Wasn't blaming you, or saying that you should have done more or less research. Modelling is an art and whether one wants to make the model as accurate as possible, or a complete opposite of the real thing is really up to that person. In the video it really looks like that the box art's upper part is a very different colour than the lower part of the internals. Maybe it was to represent the shadows, I don't know. For me it looked like it's different. And this is in no way me saying that you messed up, rather Airfix not being consistent with the box art and the paint instruction. Wouldn't be the first time, really. I understand the request for more brush painting. Many people don't have an airbrush out of financial, lack of free space or any other reasons. And all the big names here on youtube from PLASMO to Doog, use airbrush extensively. Using a brush seems to be secondary most of the time. I for one was chasing the golden way of paintbrushing to get the same effect as an airbrush. Never reached it. Which probebly contributed me losing all my mojo back in the day and putting the hobby away. Also the two techniques aren't mutually exclusive. In fact, they should come together and form an allience to get the best result possible. Now again, this is not about me bashing you not using an airbrush. By the end of the day it's your decision and I will respect that regardless of me saying that you should have used an airbrush for certain places or not.

    I suggest you get a better compressor after maybe a year. These compressors might not last. Great video!

    Very nice build but due to the lighting some colors looks only black especialy when applying the blue wavecamo... The black interieur of the boat looks wrong. A mid gray/navy gray would way better.

    Thanks for your thoughts - the paint used on the inside is a very dark grey rather than a pure black but as you say, the lighting and camera settings have made it look much darker

    Maybe using an airbrush would have helped during construction

    Yes, It probably would have - especially with all those little fiddly bits. Sadly though, I built this model about 10 months ago, which was about 9 months before I bought my airbrush

    Looking forward to this because after 'Brexit' I am going to use one of these to raid France's northern coast, fill it up with wine, cheese and various European motor car parts and bring them back to Blighty...
