Part of the selection process must have been to see how much of a character the pilot was, I suspect...

I'm a 1/32 scale guy. But I always had a hankering for Airfix' Kittyhawk in 1/72 - purely for nostalgic reasons. Luckily enough I found this 1/48 kit in the local charity shop for only £3 and thought, "This might scratch that nostalgia itch".

I boight 2 of these when they were released -- they were the first in 1/48 with the proper cockpit. The floor is actually the top of the wing and other models use a flat floor which crushes the side structures unrecognizably. This kit gets it right. Congratulations Airfix!

Have the two little brothers 1/72 , one Chinese waiting for painting, one RAF Desert scheme waiting to build. I'll do them before I have a go at 1/48 RAF desert scheme

I have just built this kit, and yes, it is a nice kit. Only problem is the shark teeth decals that were quite tricky to get in place, but I got it right in the end with a lot of patience. Thanks for the review.

I enjoyed my build of this kit there's a really nice fit to the wing root that felt very tamiya, I did it as a Pearl Harbour bird because Iirc the AVG markings don't have enough points on the sun and I didn't want to spend extra on decals.

Yes, there should be 12 points on the sun but there’s only 11 on these decals. When I build this kit, I’ll look for aftermarket kuomintang roundels - I like the AVG colour scheme more. 😊

I've built the 1/72 bird in American volunteer group. I've got the Hobbycraft P-40B in the stash. I'm looking forward to seeing the build on this one.

Glad to see the early model P40s , instead of the tired , and overdone N varient .

Built that one a couple of tears ago, it was a fun build.

That pilot figure will indeed be most welcome here! And I very much like the separate arms -- am presently making progress on some vintage kits by other makers where the one-piece pilots seem to be having some manner of upper gastrointestinal distress. Decals look nice too. Canopy parts look very nice. Have for some time been pondering whether to get one of this kit. After seeing this, yep, would like to build one. 😊

Hi Gary, I mean this in a constructive way. It would be nice to see more research into the subject and the kit, especially if reviewing a kit that’s been around for a long time. What Airfix did right, what others have found with the build and what Airfix messed up. For example the Flying Tigers aircraft roundels should have a 12 pointed star. Does it matter that decals are wonderful if something like the roundels are wrong?

I'd love to have the time to do more extensive research into the kits, I just don't with having a 10-hr+ day every day as it is. It's the balance I have to make given this is my full-time job and I need to generate content. But that's the beauty of the comments box, people who know a lot more about a given subject than me can help out with their knowledge, so I very much appreciate you sharing this. BTW have you told Airfix about this issue?

how do you know the artist for the kits never seen it on the box ?

Adam Tooby does pretty much all the box art for Airfix, he's got a certain style that is recognisable! Very fine and versatile artist.

Gary, I do like kits that build their cockpits up from the inside out like this. If you have time can you reference stands? They are difficult to find in the colonies. Next time you visit Airfix, would they allow you to see a moulding process? Per our last exchange it would be interesting to see the difference between low and high pressure I hadn't thought of adding a 1/48 P-40 to the collection but this box review has definitely changed my mind, its quite a difference over the 1/72. Airfix doesn't do moulding themselves, most of it is done in India but the 1/24 Spitfire is moulded in the UK. You can see the process in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dIGbyKmelaidkrw.html

Am I missing something, or is the detailed description of what's on the box, including warnings and pointing out where the Airfix logo is, which is actually visible to all and other details is really necessary?

​​It's not really about liking or not liking it Gary. I watch a lot of your 'what's in the box' and find your detailed description of the contents informative. It's just the description of the outside of the box in such detail which puzzles me. Maybe I've watched too many! Perhaps I should scroll forward to the inside the box' section.?​@@garys_stuff
