Aircraft Production in Southern California | Planes of Fame

Just prior to the museum temporarily closing due to COVID-19, we completed our "Working Together" display about Aircraft Production in Southern California. Someday, we hope visitors will be back to enjoy our galleries but for now, we'd like to share our education director's quick summary of the display.

Thankyou very much, concise and informative. There is no doubting the American industry was far ahead in technical abilities and sophisticated production than the rest of the world. Essentially all condensed in California. I was fortunate to visit my Aunties in Seattle in 1997. We obviously had to visit Boeing at Renton. Back home l went to Duxford and was able to view the B17 and B29. To think the B29 flew in 1941 (and sadly crashed on it's maiden flight, proof of how fraught test flying was) . Just to see how complex the B29 undercarriage was perfectly illistrated the phenomenal progress of the aircraft industry at that time. I'm not entirely certain the B29 's were built in California because of their complexity. I have only recently subscribed and enjoy the down to earth no frills presentation. Many thanks. Take care and stay safe.

'There is no doubting the American industry was far ahead in technical abilities and sophisticated production than the rest of the world.' I think you'll find the Germans were way ahead of everyone.

Let’s remember the political situation in California pretty much killed aircraft manufacturing in California. Californians would benefit hugely if aircraft manufacturing could return.
