My friend Orville (no, not THAT Orville) got a call from a rancher a couple hundred miles away, he had a bad magneto in his single engine plane. Against Orville's advice, the owner flew his airplane a couple hundred miles to Orville's FBO on a single magneto, over mountainous terrain, instead of waiting for Orville to come to him. After replacement of the mag, the owner took off to head home. One half mile after takeoff the other mag failed.
Thanks for showing us Sir, it is a well done great tutorial you certainly know your stuff , and cheers from NZ

Yes. I’d love a reassembly for the motor on my airboat.
Amazing how expensive that device is.
It depends on what you call a long time. If it had a tan internal grounded coil than I would agree. I was rebuilding Bendix mags when the red externally grounded coil first became mandatory.
@HangaRatz

Yup. Red coils have been out there a while.
Thank you for the very informative video. Kinda looks like you've done this before 😂

Once or twice...
This is awesome! I have taken apart the Slick mags on 44T a few times. Once in the back of my Excursion at F46 after Steve and I installed a mag and it was misfiring horribly. It turns out that our timing job just sucked.

Yup. Just take your time and have the pubs available.
Just found this today, I love pretty much all the videos I watch from your channel, but this is probably the best magneto breakdown I've seen bar none. Curious, as an owner of an O-360-A4A equipped plane with Slick Mags, how much different are these procedures on a Slick Mag? (Also if anyone happens to know of any videos of equal quality to this one that goes through the Slick Mags that would be ideal!) **EDIT: To be clear, I've got no crazy intentions of trying to do this myself, just trying to be as educated as I can for when I do have chats with my shop.

@@HangaRatz oh awesome, thank you!! Truly love how much I'm able to learn from your videos. I'm a new aircraft owner (bought a PA-28-180 in August) so learning as much of the mechanical side is important to me to being a safe pilot and a smart owner :)
Great video thanks. I have six cylinders mags on air boat.whats the best way to maintain them keep them healthy

Take them apart every 10 years or so and make sure the bearings are in good shape. Normal aging issues are grease, coil fail, and condenser fail. The coil is essentially plastic which cracks and the condensers leak. Thanks for watching!
Interesting watch, but as you correctly caution, the Service Manuals are essential. Disassembly is easy, it's shimming new bearings and e-gap timing that will bring amateurs unstuck.

That's why I only have disassembly videos on these! Thanks for watching!
Very cool to watch! I'm a newbie pilot in training and get the pleasure of also getting to work on them with a friend a bit. Which loctite product or product type is used on the Slick? I use blue/242 all the time on RC helicopters, and red is very serious permanent stuff which gets used in some of the higher vibration or higher speed/stress items.
@jimcaufman2328

The recommended Loctite is in the slick manual.

I pointedly do not reference various sealants, torques, specs, etc. as I don't want folks using KZread for return to service authority. Yeah, those folks are out there... Thanks for watching!

@@jimcaufman2328 Yep, some truth/good intent in the reply and some of it is what I suspect to be trade secrets, you just don't go and tell everyone out there what took you years to learn. I'm in business and I get that. I looked in the AIM first of course just in case it would mention anything about thread lock. I'm brand new at this, it's not my thing other than for fun/learning and enjoyment and I'm always under good supervision when I "do" anything. and If I'm not I know at my experience level to seek it first before "doing" anything.
Thank goodness the FAA is making sure electronic ignition doesn’t make it to certified aircraft.. imagine how hazardous that could be! 🙄

Hello Bill. Thanks so much for the video. I have two mags that are in need of servicing. They came out of a 1941 Aeronca 65-TAC. Cont. A65-8. Can you recommend a quality certified service facility that doesn't charge an arm and a leg? Thanks again.
