Airbrush Warhammer 40K Minis with Acrylic Artist Inks! Liquitex and Daler Rowney FW Inks

Inks! Join me as I use acrylic artists inks to make some awesome looking basecoats on these warhammer 40k minis! These translucent inks have a ton of pigment and flow very nicely. They are ideal for use with an airbrush. When sprayed onto a pre-shaded surface, some very excellent transitions result.
This method of painting Warhammer minis has been talked about a lot recently and I had to give it a try!
I’m testing out Daler Rowney FW ink and Liquitex artist ink. Both seem to work well.
Step 1 Prime Black
Step 2 Highlight with White Ink
Step 3 Colored Ink!

Awesome work, my friend. For me, the real winners were the smoothness of the liquid white pigment through the airbrush, and the vibrancy of the yellow. I work pretty much only with inks during basecoating. Favorite stuff. One thing I love is if you've got ink left in the cup and you want to go back and pick out details like the tops of shoulders, you can mix a drop or two of white into your cup and mix it in there before going back. Prevents you from wasting ink you overestimated needing.

I just bought my very first of these, the Liquitex Deep Violet at 10:45, and I absolutely love it. This feels like it was MADE for my cheapo Harbor Freight airbrush, and I think it's probably the smoothest-to-use paint of any of the ones I've tried, even more so than the already-very-good Army Painter Air starters and Citadel Contrasts that I've tried. I absolutely intend to buy more of these inks, plus the airs and contrasts. Thank you so much.

I've used the liquitex inks mixed with some plain acrylic medium and it has worked great for glazing and creating other similar effects. The layer is translucent and also works as "glass" or "crystal" effect when used with high gloss medium.

Would love to see you do an absolute beginner's tutorial on how to start out with airbrushing. It's been something I've considered, on and off, for a couple of years now, but I've never taken the plunge. Since you seem pretty new to it as well I'd love to see you go through how you started out. Plus your videos are so nice to watch! Keep up the great work.

I'm so glad I decided to try out these inks. I was using Royal Talens' Amsterdam line of acrylic inks for zenithal highlighting. I was constantly getting a speckled texture at the transitions. I thought it was my technique or my airbrush that was causing the issue (I'm still a noobie painter). After switching to Liquitex, my transitions are coming out buttery smooth. Thanks for the tip!

Painting with artists inks is a game changer, especially with an airbrush it's so easy to avoid some of the pitfalls of airbrushing with paints.

I've been wanting to step into inks, so this was great to see! I remember seeing someone spraying transparent inks over an undercoat like you did, but the pre-shading was colored. (both Red and green over blue shadows with yellow highlights) I tried out the red and liked it a lot- instead of just changing values from dark to light it also changed the temperature from warm to cold. It would be neat to see you do similar experiments with colored shading.

Colored pre-shading is very interesting to me! It's definitely on my list to try- and if it turns out well I'll make a video! Someone else in the comments mentioned using pink with a white zenithal under yellow... Very intriguing...

I have to admit that I had never thought of airbrushing models with acrylic inks but the results are outstanding. I think the Thalo Blue would work very well as a base color for a Space Marine tank or APC. The Land Raider color is close enough to the Salamander scheme that I would finish it as such. After seeing the results a wash would really set off the color schemes. I will seriously think of using this method on a Rhino model I plan to build. Thanks for sharing this interesting and helpful tutorial.

Another thing i noticed about the Liquitex Ink(dont know about the Daler kind) but the Liquitex flows off the airbrush REALLY nice, It makes painting white parts really easy. Plus they are all really strong, They have become my go-to for painting my AT models since the colors are so bright and vibrant.

Oooh, I just discovered you and I am having a blast. I love me a fellow pigment head. I do watercolor too and need that pigment info to be completely happy with a color! To be honest I'd be very happy learning to paint minis on a split primary palette base and then add metal and see where I could get to with that before widening my paint collection.
