Air Rifle Dieseling For More Power Part 2!
Like me on Facebook to Stay up to date / deuceandguns
Part two of my series of Air Rifle dieseling for more power. Here I test several different fluids as possible air rifle dieseling agents. These are only being tested for speed and not for accuracy. Please keep in mind that this practice WILL damage your air rifle and could injure the shooter in the process. I do these test and damage my air rifle so you don't have to. Remember to like, favorite, and subscribe if you want more of these types of videos. Thanks for watching BC's Deuce and Guns!

Same. I suspect this all arose out of manufacturers warning against it to protect themselves from both liability and from government. By adding a combustible material, you are in theory, creating a firearm...but since we’re all Americans here, who gives a rip.

@@Scout887 If my math is right, it's an increase speed of around 30% Those are pretty big gains. I would guess the difference in drop would be obvious If the increased speed doesn't screw up your accuracy.
Thanks for performing this test and providing the data results. I'm glad you subjected your air rifle to the potential increased wear to provide some very insightful information. Most of all thanks for not making us watch each shot. Enjoy shooting!
For many years I have been using Diesel additive, and up to date it has been the best yet. The additive is the stuff you can buy from most retail auto suppliers. You add it to your vehicles fuel to cut down on any smoky exhaust. It works by giving the fuel a higher cetane rating so that you get a more complete firing burn at a lower compression rate. So!!! you can imagine what it is like when you use it neat, just one drop from a small squeeze can in the hollow of the pellet just before you close the barrel gives it a real cracking sound when it is fired. Another thing that I have had good results with is the fuel that is used for propeller driven model aircraft, it is a compression ignition fuel the same as diesel but it fires at a lower compression rate, so gives good results in a gun.---- A word of CAUTION----- I only use dieseling fuel in old worn airguns to boast their power as it is not normally needed in a good gun.. Good shooting everyone!!!!!

That cracking sound spoils all what is left of accuracy on wore down springer
When I was a kid (about 35 years ago), new tins of Benjamin pellets came with some sort of light oil already in them. Think I was told the oil was good for the gun or something. I also remember believing the Walmart brands in plastic containers were shit because those Benjamin pellets blew through shit that stopped the cheap stuff cold. I remember hassling my parents to order me more Benjamin's, because they were my hunting pellets. As an adult I have to wonder if some savvy person at Benjamin knew what they were doing.
I absolutely loved the spreadsheet results. I enjoy videos that use science and convey the most information in the least amount of time. Well done! It's odd because when I first saw these videos I wasn't interested in the subject but now suddenly I'm very interested in the subject and greatly enjoyed them I would have liked to have seen diesel fuel and paraffin as well. One big advantage of the paraffin is that the pellets can be prepared in advance and loaded just like a regular pellet. Now I'm going to have to buy a break barrel pellet gun and do some science myself. :-)
Gamo Hunter 440 .22 owner here. I discovered dieseling after cleaning my air rifle, by using a vegetable-based oil designed for lubricating fine mechanisms (sorry, I do not remember the brand). The reason I liked that particular oil was that it had a high viscosity (sticky) and took a really log time to evaporate - this means that the contents of the pellet skirt stayed put even as I carried them in a small box - that's if not shaken too violently. I experimented by dosing with a small syringe and needle, for better control. Did not have any device to measure pellet velocity, but you could really hear and feel the difference in the shoulder, as well as check penetration of wooden targets (went straight through inch-thick fir), which I thought it was unbelievable. I found that it can nicely increase the rifle's effective range in the 60-70 meters, when hunting for crows or magpies. In my case though, I felt that accuracy was dropping, or at least it was not as consistent as with plain pellets. Now to the side effects. My Hunter air rifle had an original PFTE seal / head ontop of the pressure piston. After firing about 50-100 dieseled pellets, the backfire from the combustion cut a clean hole through the teflon. Now, I considered buying the original replacement as well as other... alternatives. Since I wanted to still be able to use dieseling, I chose a piston head made of oil-and-heat-resistant rubber, which had been originally designed for some sort of fuel/oil pumps. I have never had an issue with that seal ever since, although it must have fired thousands of dieseled shots. Hope this helps someone.

GREAT VIDEO!!!! Love seeing the deuce! You sure took some time to make this video and enter all those numbers into an excel chart and make a graph. I'm impressed. Very well put together and thought out. I wonder what compressor oil would do? That gun has some kick. Wow.
Finally, a well done video with data. I know it is older but new to me. LOL
Good scientific reporting! To the point as well. Thanks.
Very cool info. Presented nicely.

Brilliant video.
Awesome video yet again, Subscribed! I accidentally found out about dieseling just yesterday as of posting this comment. I got a new ( and quite cheap Black Ops) nitro piston air rifle claiming 1200-1250... I've owned the same one before, but shooting this brand new one last night the first two shots sounded like a 22 as you had said. My old (same rifle) didn't sound like that lol. So I looked online to see what it could be and found out about it. Made plenty of sense... as I work on diesel trucks myself.
I use to use gun powder from a shotgun shell with wax to seal it. But never tested the speed. Just noticed more penetration.
Thanks for the graph.😎👍🏻
Very well done!
Could you try candle wax set in the pellet skirt? It would be interesting to see if it works, because then you would be able to have reliable dieseled pellets that would be easy to load and could be stored for long periods of time.
Seems if you were trying dieseling, you would have tried diesel.. grins.

nice job. pure facts
Scientific and comprehensive. Like another commenter I wondered if diesel fuel itself would be best. I suspect not though.
Good test, i am glad to see the data displayed like you did, the only question i have is what is the spread under normal operation? Be safe, be kind, be good.
I would think automatic transmission fluid would or diesel fuel would work well to. nice job though very interesting
Hi, your investigación is fantastic. The better video💪💪💪.
Very informative and interesting, I had never heard of diesels get before, there an definite increase in speed while not hurting accuracy at all, I just wonder if and how much it would damage the rifle as I sometimes achieve the higher speed you demonstrated from my Typhoon.
You got a thumbs up from me on this one as soon as I saw the truck...now I know why your channel is named Deuce and guns... very cool. Good info.. thanks for all the data. Appreciate you video. Just curious would dieseling have a greater effect on a less powerful gun ?? say 600 fps range or so.
Interesting results, and nicely done documentation. Gotta go get me some Hoppe's #9, and a good air rifle now. :D I'm curious to see how regular diesel engine fuel would perform, though.
I use the hopes number 9 cleaner on a q tip shot thru and it works pretty dang well
Very interesting videos. Thanks for taking the time and the risk to make them. I am interested in the results you might get with a similar gun/powerplant in a larger caliber. Just as they are a little more efficient in .22, then typically a little bit less in .25. I would bet that dieseling would yield the best results for power in the largest caliber and with the lightest ammo
Vicks Vapor Rub is very good! Also vegetable oil (spray can) version and peanut oil. I would be very interested to see hoe Pellgun Oil worked out. ..
I have heard that Vicks vapo rub works the best . Any chance we could see velocity numbers on that ?
well done....
What about nitro gel into the backs of the pellets or flash 💥 powder?
I'm interested in what residue that's left in the barrel. Is it sooty, greasy, also is there pitting happening? Some higher power .177 rifles can shoot at roughly 1200 fps out of the box adding dieseling with that could put fps in the 1400+ range. I'm curious to see what effect dieseling would have on a .22 air rifle considering the skirt is much larger. Or would the larger amount not ignite.
I am actually trying to STOP dieseling in my old Gamo 440. I replaced the spring and seal in it, but I greased the seal too and when I got it back together, it was dieseling really bad. Figured out what I had done, took the gun back apart, cleaned all the grease off the piston and inside the cylinder too. Made sure there was NO GREASE on the piston, seal, and cylinder and put it back together. Ran some pellets thru and it is still dieseling, however not as bad as before. So if you ever run this test again, try automotive grease.
BC, In one video you had a Crosman 2289 Backpacker. It would be interesting to see what chrony power increase would result from dieseling. It being the same as the Crosman and Daisy pump guns. If you do a 3rd video on dieseling? Thanks, for you videos.
Vaseline is the classic, because adding just a speck in the skirt preloads the pellet.
Came for the guns. Stayed for the speadsheet!
I have an old Baracuda 5,6mm(Weichrauch) breakbarrel air rifle that is purposely designed to operate for dieseling mixture of ether(chloroform)-gas in the rifle's compression chamber. The ether gas is stored in a sids mounted gas chamber tube and will deliver a certain amaunt of gas/vapor directy to the rifle's piston. I've noticed a significant increase of power/velocity is achieved when using round-ball heavy grained pellets compared to the common dovetail type pellets. This ball pellet tends to hold a bit longer in the barrel and wait until the diesel explosion occurs and this moves the pellet in a very high propulsion pressure. Sadly I cannot get a new high quality spring(specifically made for this purpose) any longer from Weichrauch or else. So you should try this using a more tight sized pellets(like roundball or slug) and maybe the results will be better. One other thing, the dieseling explosion will also increase backforce to the spring and make it weak and shoten it's life. Keep up the good works 👍
Thank you for doing this, would you mind testing vaseline/regular petroleum jelly?
it seems like you left out a few obvious ones in this test, primarily something like diesel or kero, something paraffin based like paraffin (or other waxes), chapstick, vaseline (all of these could be easily pre-loaded and you wouldn't have to worry about knocking them over) and I would have liked to have seen something like the 3in1 that you used in the other video or just plain old motor oil under the same conditions. All of those would also be cheaper than your top contenders As far as the damage that everyone is expecting... I'd be willing to bet that it's just a question of newer, more modern, higher quality seals vs older stuff... your not going to burn a seal unless the ignited gas leaks past it, and for the same or less money that you used to need to shell out you get a much better, better quality rifle with better quality parts. Even some of the Chinese ones are actually quite decent now, and I would expect them to last longer/do better than older rifles. The other side of this is what are people using magnum air rifles for that they need more power? Lesser rifles are the ones that typically need more power and I would expect them to be the ones that wouldn't last long, while a lot of magnums come close to the speed of sound where this kind of thing _will_ hurt accuracy (though I suspect you could work around by carefully choosing pellets)

I'm also curious what results stuff like diesel fuel, vaseline and paraffine wax / bees wax would give. I got good results with vaseline (petroleum jelly). But I don't have a chrony to compare different compounds. With vaseline it's easy to put a consistant amount into the pellet skirt and it will stay there and won't spill all over the place or in the compression chamber, or passing by the pellet, like more runny liquids would possibly do, just by capillarity effects. But creasy and waxy compounds may also need a higher temperature to ignite and burn properly, what might be lowering the dieseling efficiency. So - I'm still curious about the outcome. ;) BTW: In fact the seals and o-rings usualy can't handle the dieseling pressure well. I once testet this with a tissue put over the barrel gap. Was pretty greyish from the exhausts afterwards.

Brake cleaner is more ether based than alcohol. Try plain old CH3OH (methyl) next time. It won't evaporate like ether. I was skeptical about the brake cleaner. I would also always lube your gun after using any solvent (ether or alcohol or water) based propellant before you put it away. You could also try naptha (zippo lighter fluid). I like the results though. Really nice graph. Post more.
I want that truck! :)) Or make a gleuable paste from black powder, fill the pellet, let it dry overnight, for the smoke effect. :))

@deuce when I was a kid I broke a lot of springs doing this, lucky the springs where only 5 bucks. when I did this I did it totally differently. I did not put the fuel on the pellet, I put it in the compression chamber.. warning. try this at your own risk. I broke a lot of springs, as all the air in the chamber burns

How many improved shots would you expect from oil in the cylinder?
I know this is pretty old but I have some knowledge of these products and since the design of the air rifle is specifically about extreme pressure why not try an extreme pressure lubricant? My favorite very affordable and reliable brand is Marvel Mystery Oil's air tool oil and it has a little spout that would make it real easy to put one drop and only one drop on a small pellet. My thinking is that the lubricants are really just making the bore slicker. So along those lines why not a teflon based lube? In my table saw I use the generic PTFE resins that *dry white* and obviously this is ideal because a) no solvent to ruin the gun b) You can spray a whole tin back home or spread out on newspaper then bring them out to the field, range, etc... c) they won't be messy or a fire hazard, either.
need to try just plain #1 diesel fuel
I could imagine the low mass of the pellet losing velocity very quickly after leaving the barrel, being overtaken by the shock wave and inducing tumbling as it goes transonic. Would be nice to see what actually happens on a high speed camera, because my imagination could be wrong.

Diesel and gasoline eat the seals in a day
Doesn't brake fluid or cleaner eat seals?
@deuceandguns

It depends on the type of rubber being used but you are correct that it can make the seals too soft/brittle to hold pressure. The cheaper the air rifle the more likely a cheap seal that would be affected was used. That's why I used a throwaway rifle for this demo. Even if it doesn't fail catastrophically it may start it on a downward trend in usability.
If my understanding of lighter fluid is correct, me thinks another name for it is NAPTHA. Similar to mineral spirits. You should also try a bit of kerosene.
Been thinking about this. Have always used Hoppes oil as it is what I use to oil my guns. Very inconsistent results. Just came to mind, has any one tried paraffin? same molecular make up as kerosene or diesel, Poured into the base of the pellet it could be a viable option, and would not drip out.

you just exceeded the speed of sound ~ 1100 fps. that is very fucking cool from an air rifle, it is the reason why you hear the supersonic boom when you shoot. to anyone wanting to repeat this, bear in mind that your seal WILL break, and supersonic ammo accuracy is very very bad. Is it a dieseling phenomenon or is it that the solvents are sealing the pellets better and water being less viscous it didn't hold as good of a seal and seems to have even negatively impacted the shot. Also low octane gasoline would compression ignite easier than any of these oils as would alcohol or lacquer thinner.

It's dieseling. Without the advent of smell-o-vision you can't smell the burning but it's igniting. The issue with some of the things I tried here and the three you list is that it won't stay in the skirt of the pellet. Thicker oils stay put better so work better.
maybe you should try a litle guncotton behind the pellet?? just got this idea after seeing this vid.

I put a few drops of baby oil, or any light oil, on the pellets by adding a few drops to the container and letting the pellets roll around in the in the metal container, thereby coating all of the pellets.Too repeat, with the oiled pellets igniting at night, with a flameyou could see in the dark. It did not ignite with a non-oiled pellet, proving dieseling.
Did you ever try diesel ?
Don't use solvents that will destroy the seals. Some of that stuff is guaranteed to destroy.
Water under pressure gets colder not hotter.
Two things to conceder. 1) Newton's law says for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. There for in a spring action air riffle the pellet is being pushed by the action of the spring. What ever dieseling action that might accrue would be pushing equally on the spring and the pellet, there for you will only get as much pressure as the spring can produce. 2) For what ever fuel you use, it would have to be atomized in an oxygenated air mixture for combustion to accrue. A drop of oil in a pellet has no chance of ignition. The added pellet speed is due to the oil acting as a seal and a lubricant between the pellet and the barrel. What you see as smoke coming from the barrel is the oil atomizing as it is leaving the barrel. Now lets say you shot a squirt of starting fluid, butane or propane in the compression chamber, that might get you ignition. Because the fuel would be mixed with oxygenated air, and by compressing that you might get enough heat to ignite it. Just my thoughts, The oil in the barrel would be a good thing to prevent rust and friction damage to the barrel.
@audiophile75
9 жыл бұрын
Old Man, you're simply wrong. First off while you can accurately quote Newton it doesn't mean that you understand him. The spring is not static and the accrued momentum of the spring in motion, releasing it's kinetic energy, is exponentially greater the longer it's travel (increase in speed). You can imagine if you try to push your car from a standstill it's possible but if that car is traveling at max speed your effort is worth virtually nothing. Secondly, THEY CALL IT DIESELING FOR A REASON. It works just like a diesel engine, which has no spark plug but rather works on the increasing percentage of oxygen in a decreasing volume of air until the oxygen percentage and the heat of compression gets to a spontaneously combustible level. The oil is burning as evidenced not only by the very obvious increase in power (more than the sealing power of the oil) but also in the smell of SMOKE (which smells like diesel exhaust for a reason). Further I don't think that it does much, if any, damage to the rifle. The combustion does take place in the barrel and with the constantly increasing amount of air coming from the spring piston it effectively pushes the cumbustion out away from the piston port. I've heard many ppl expound nauseasously about the dangers and damage to air rifles and I've found none of that. I've been dieseling for years and there's been no obvious damage or wear to the sealing ring of the breakbarrel. I think the funniest comment that I read from someone in his vehement diatribe against dieseling was how it broke his...... 30 year old, $10, chinese made air rifle when he tried to diesel it. However, I would add that the large amount of incompletely burned oil results in soot buildup in the barrel. Really, it's pretty extreme. Just think of a exhaust coming from a diesel truck. These sooty remains can be acidic and eventually cause pitting if left in the barrel as well as accuracy issues from buildup scraping off onto the exiting pellet. I usually just shoot some wet paper towel wad through the gun. Happy shootin'!

love the graphed data and the nearly-scientific approach: I understand you can't get KZreadrs to like a video of 100-percent science-lab-quality research: this is probably as close as anyone can get, hence the kudos.
Any advantages are slight and nothing to write home to mother about👍
D and G could you get a 35 dollar Crossman 760 and test that for speed, accuracy and DURABILITY. I have a theory that non-rifled air rifles will hold up better then rifled ones in these tests. IMO there will be nothing to slow the pellet down and stress the seals like a rifled gun would do.

The old pumpmaster? I got one of those for Christmas back in the early 80s and my nephews still shoot it. I'm not sure if the pump will ignite the oil but I can try. Thanks for the video request.

***** I have tried dieseling an old 66 power master and it doesn't work. Give it a try though.
Y not use PELGUN OIL
charging the spring chamber with gaseous oxygen, along with the oil, right before firing? maybe? I need to go get an airgun!

I highly dont recommend, pure oxygen is too good oxidizer for that use. I have seen one PCP gun that was filled with oxygen, not air. It burned hole to the air tank and exploded even with stock oiling
