This was Exercise Triplex West. Not only Army but hundreds of RAF. I know this because I was one of them. And then posted there Dec 28 1964!!!

I was glad tp see El Adem in 1964. My 206 Sqdn Shackleton lost an engine at Nasser's Corner, with 5 hours of desert to get to El Adem...but... on landing a few beers, then into the swimming pool. All in a day's work!

The vehicle at 06:10 is a Hunting Percival 'Harrier'. (4x2) One of only four built for airdrop trials in 1957. One still exists, (reg. 26EL15), in the National Army Museum's reserve collection (at least, it did in June 2006). Powered by a BSA A10 650cc Twin motorbike engine. It could be folded, lengthways, into a box shape for ease of packing/transporting. Unbelievable that this film exists !

Early 60s I lived here with my brother, spent a time in Tobruk and then moved to El Adem. Lots of great memories, my father was an NCO working for the CO, I have plenty of pictures of our bungalow being visited by Air Vice Marshall's for official photographs etc and my mum being photographed in the NAFFI as some fresh fruit had been flown in!! I was in the cubs and the El Adam school - remember being sent home from school every time there was a sandstorm/gibli as the school buildings were corrugated metal and it made a right racket... also remember the swimming pool where my father taught me to swim!

I have been there several times for Para drops and army exercises with Hastings and Hercules. The place was a pig hole. The Cpl Club (!) had no glasses if you wanted a rum and coke you were given a can so that you could have a swig so that the barman could pour the rum in!!

My father was up and down North Africa, including that part of Libya at a time when the Italians and Rommel's mob were claiming ownership. There wasn't just the heat and flies, but also shells, bullets and bombs. As a BritBrat I missed going there, but went through the Suez Canal 4 times {twice each way], spent 7 years in the Far East, and 3.5 in [West] Germany. The Forces were very good at looking after their brats.
