    Just watched the 3 parts to this sunroof project. Excellent work & congratulations on fixing it successfully. Hope re-adding the motor covers at the end helped to quieten down the sunroof motor noise. 👍👍👍

    Thank you for this series of videos Joe; these were invaluable. It was daunting at first, but took my time. I finished my replacement sunroof seal job on my '78 SC last night without a hitch! My wind deflector was a three-piece like yours, which appears to be original to the car. I ended up using a dry PTFE lube on the sunroof cables and motor gear; hopefully that stays pretty clean. Thanks again!

    Joe, thx you so very much for the super detailed EXCELLENT video on how to remove, repair and reinstall a sun roof on an older 911. I wasn't going to attempt the repair myself, but found your video to be so very good, I decided to try it. So far so good. Parts are ordered, hopefully, with your videos I'll get it back together. Again, thx for posting this! -Jay

    This was a fantastic tutorial. I found it was easy to engage the gearbox so that the sunroof is slightly cocked when closed so that the one side of the sunroof will close tightly while the other will have a small gap. It might only be one of the winds of the cable, about an 1/8", and not too visible until attempting to close it. So measure the gap from the left & right side to make it perfectly square before installing the gearbox.

    So clearly explained--all three are well worth the time to watch. One additional tip is that it's easiest to insert the sunroof headliner panel into the channels using slight side-to-side play just before bolting the channels down. Thank you for these vids, Joe!

    fantastic. You should give lessons on how to make a youtube video. I just got a 77 911. Only thing still broken is the sunroof. You have clearly explained/shown everything I needed to know and I now have the confidence to just do it. Will be this weekend's project. Will take longer because I am not sure what to order yet, but that's ok because it will get done. You made it look easy.

    Nice video where I learn lot of missing information on gasket / seal assembly direction. On my SC 1981, I have some plastic covers on front screwed bracket probably to protect the sunroof liner from sharp edges. I like how you checked the assembly condition before any disassembly and then question on installation, like with the rubber pads i.e. Regards from France.

    This series of videos are great. Everything has gone smoothly, though when fully assembled the roof only retracts about 3-4" and then binds and won't go further. When I remove the front bolts/guide brackets and provide a bit of upward force on the front of the roof while retracting everything runs smoothly. However when I reassemble everything, and try again it binds. So I'm thinking something is causing the roof to not tilt as much as needed to fully retract. Any ideas?

  • @JoeEngineer

    @JoeEngineer

    Off the top of my head, the front of the cables have little pivots on them, make sure they rotate smoothly, the tracks need to be parallel so the sunroof doesn't bind in them, and make sure the little headliner piece isn't hanging up in the cavity the sunroof retracts into.

    Excellent video Joe. All your video's are extremely helpful. Quick question regarding the operation of the sunroof; when either opening or closing the sunroof, does (or should) the sunroof motor automatically turn off? For instance, on my '78, while opening or closing the sunroof, the motor will continue to run as long as I have the rocker switch pressed, even though it's fully opened/closed. I looked in the manual for guidance, but nothing is referenced regarding holding the switch. Thanks for your input, and keep up the great video's. You're saving me lots of $$$.

  • @JoeEngineer

    @JoeEngineer

    6 ай бұрын

    The motor clutch is just a little rubber coupler so if you continue to run it after it fully opens/closes it will twist the coupler and potentially break it. I let go if the switch as soon as it's at full open or close.

    I watched this excellent vide. I followed the instructions and got the cables reconnected, the felt and seal replaced. The roof moves effortlessly back and forth however the back end of the sunroof won’t lift up to complete the final seal. There is a 1 inch gap between the top of the sun roof and the top of the car. The felt is not touching yet in the overlap area and everything is clean. What am I missing? I have a 1995 993. Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

  • @JoeEngineer

    @JoeEngineer

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Karen. I admit I am not too familiar with the 993 system but it looks very similar. I did confirm on the Porsche PET that the 993 uses 964 cables, which are similar to the G-body cables. If you look at Part 2, Cable Repair, I go over how to repair and clean the cables and the channels. If you notice, the end of the cable has a tiny double hinged arm and then bolts to the sunroof panel. The cables push the sunroof panel all the way forward, then the double hinged arm rotates and flips the back end of the sunroof panel up, flush with the roof. I would remove the sunroof panel again and check to make sure the double hinged arms rotate smoothly and are not binding in any way. They have fasteners on them you can adjust. Then re-assemble and give it a go one more time.

    Got it done. Everything went exactly as you showed in your video. My remaining problem is that the sunroof doesn't close fully. One rear corner is down slightly. Only thing I can think of is to disconnect the motor again and move the gear/cable a notch to tighten it up a bit. Or if there is a better solution, please let me know. Thanks.

  • @JoeEngineer

    @JoeEngineer

    3 жыл бұрын

    You could check that and also check that the hinged part of the ends of the cables are rotating smoothly. I think those are responsible for flipping the rear edge of the sunroof up flush with the roof as it is closing.

    Hello Joe, I followed your videos and was able to get the sun roof cables and the whole thing back together. The problem now is that the Electric Sunroof Transmission doesn't 'Grab' the cables, it just spins. The black rubber bushing that connects the trans to the electric motor is fine on both sides and I can see both sides spinning. I confirmed it all works 'Manually' if I turn the gear with a screw driver. I took the Transmission apart and it seems theres a brass gear that just spins. Seems like it should be keyed it so it doesn't. I hate to have to buy another transmission, especially if it's not the problem. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thx Again, -J

    There is a worm gear mechanism in there with 2 meshing gears. If they aren't meshing then either replace the transmission or someone may actually make the replacement gears themselves. I know you can get replacement gears for speedometer/odometer function but I don't know of any sunroof transmission supplier off hand. Maybe check the Pelican forums first.

    Hello Joe, Hope you're well. Quick question. I have a 76' 911S and just rebuilt the sunroof and your 3 videos were a HUGE help! I'm having '1' issue that I was hoping you might be able to help with. When the sun roof is closed, it' doesn't pop up all the way so that it's flush in the back. If I push gently it goes up, but doesn't on it's own. I tried lubricating and adjusting everything I could but it still only pops up a little. Thx! -J

  • @JoeEngineer

    @JoeEngineer

    Жыл бұрын

    I didnt run into this issue but if I had to guess, it is related to 2 things: 1) The little hinge joint on the end of the cable that attaches to the sunroof panel needs to rotate freely to pop the back of the panel up when it is in the full forward position and 2) The same little hinge joint has a toothed end that can be adjusted to set the final height of the joint when it is in the full closed position. See 11:13 on video 2.

    Hey Jose I have done all steps to put sunroof back together. My motor seems to be working I cleaned out everything but when I try and press switch. Nothing happens, I here the motor but no movement. I think it is the teeth of the gear but I don’t know how to check. I spent three days with this and I am super frustrated. I wanted to get my car ready for Monterey, CA Porsche meet but now this… I need help.

  • @JoeEngineer

    @JoeEngineer

    See 11:07. If you unbolt the drive gear on the motor you can have someone press the sunroof switch and see if the drive gear turns. If it does, check if the cables are in the correct position on either side of the drive gear so when its bolted together they engage and move the cables. If so then look at the drive gear teeth and verify if they havent been worn down to the point that they dont engage the cables.
