Air-Cooled Porsche 911 DIY Engine Oil Change

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Porsche 911 DIY Repair Blog: joe-engineer.com/
Quick step-by-step tutorial on how I do an oil change on my air-cooled 1983 Porsche 911SC. Spills and all.
Notes:
1. This process applies for 1989 and earlier Porsche 911s.
2. I make no recommendations on oil. Please see your 911 owners' manual or local air-cooled Porsche specialist for that advice.
3. If anyone is wondering about the 4 black oil bottles; I ran out of conventional oil locally and had to supplement with synthetic. No big deal.
4. Oil strainer plate removal, cleaning and replacement not shown on this video as its not needed on every oil change. If you want to see that process go here: joe-engineer.com/diy-how-to-c...
5. 1972 911s have an external oil filler door instead of the engine bay internal fill.

I have a 84 Targa, and never knew about the thermostat on the lines going to the front until recently and after 10 years of owning the car. I never changed my oil hot. The way you are doing it makes perfect sense, thank you for uploading.

Very helpful video Thank you. I could never do the job without jack stands! Better man then I... The oil type.( had to share my joy) I was a Brad Penn 20/50 now called PennGrade 1 - for 15 years - Played with other oils (both road and track). Now, left the cult, and did Liqui Moly 20/50 touring high tech and added the M0S2 Anti-Friction. My 3.2 with 100k never sounded better nor performed better. Drove 2k to Rensport Reunion two weeks ago and the car was amazing, best ever. After 2000 miles, never added a drop of oil. Just my two cents! Thanks again for making this video.

lol, Unbolting the oil nut under the engine - I've done the exact same thing, trying to move my hand away quickly. good video - and honest. I let the nut drop straight in the pan and retrieve it later.

Hi Joe..I've been enjoying your videos and finished my 3.2 rebuild on Thanksgiving. I've been changing my break in oils and followed Heidi and Franny's garage lead with the oil tank valve. Not a huge deal, but nice to dump the tank quickly when the thermostat is still open. Fumoto F309L Engine Oil Drain Valve (22mm-1.5). I'm loving my car and the destination was worth the journey for sure.

@JoeEngineer I just picked up an 1983 911 SC Targa. Needs an oil change but when I start it to take it to "warm temperature" it smokes a bunch because of old owner pour too much oil. Any tips on how to go about it? Could I do an oil change at cold temps? Thanks in advance!

Drain a little from the tank while it's cold. Might take a few drives to clear out the oil left in the oil breather circuit.

@@JoeEngineer okay that's what I thought. Here is my other caveat... the car hasn't have its valves adjusted in a bit and I was thinking of doing the valve adjustment, maintenance + oil change at the same time. Would you say to drain a little oil. Drive it around as it is. Once we can do the oil change correctly (like your video) do everything else then? Thanks so much for your help!!
