Air conditioner tips & tricks from a hot human that doesn't like to be hot!

Ғылым және технология

Due to the high costs associated with installing a full house central AC system or permanent installed split AC unit I've opted to use multiple portable air conditioners overs the years both Window units and floor standing units strategically placed throughout my house to give me more control over the humidity and temperate of those spaces. This little video will show you some of the tips and tricks I use to optimize my portable AC effectiveness cooling my spaces including some clever little tricks you may not have thought of. Since this is a short comedic video in addition to being education and informative I've included lots of extra information in the video description to help you out.
Here are a few of my all time favorite portable floor standing AC units
Whynter ARC-145SH Floor Standing 14,000 BTU AC with built in heater (heats & cools)
amzn.to/2Jt5ct1
This is my all time personal favorite floor standing AC unit because it's duel hose design means it pulls in air from outside to absorb the heat then exhausts it out of the other tube keeping the pressure in your house neutral instead of single hose units which pull air from inside of your house meaning that it has to create negative pressure in your home by pulling in more hot outside air through cracks under doors, around windows and through your bathroom vents. This kills the efficiency of those units and also ends up pulling in smells from your neighborhood, etc which is unpleasant sometimes. This unit also doesn't need a drain hose because it circulates the moisture collected back outside. This model also has a heater built in so it can pump heat into your room in the cold winter months so you don't have to heat your entire house using your furnace to save on electricity if you want your bedroom toaster than the rest of the house for instance.,
*Whynter ARC-145S Floor Standing 14,000 BTU AC without heater
amzn.to/2LDgIEV
This unit is identical to the previous one but it doesn't have a heater built in so it lacks that mode, weighs less but has the same cooling capacity and looks identical to the previous version. If you live somewhere that heating isn't necessary save a few bucks or potentially even buy a stand alone little space heater and store this unit away in the winter months. I also would like to mention I've used these Whynter AC units for 3 years now without any issues and they consistently produce the same cooling capacity year after year unlike my cheaper single hose units that failed me approximately every 2 years.
LG LW1517IVSM Window Air Conditioner, 14,000 BTU, White Ultra Quiet
amzn.to/2Xy5WqL
I just recently purchased this new dual inventor AC unit for my main living room space to cool the kitchen, living room, dining room and loft. This is my 5th high BTU unit I've purchased over the course of about 18 years living in this house and I have to say the first thing that blew me away is how quiet this unit it. Window AC's are generally quieter than floor standing units in most cases but this Windows unit even with 14k BTU cooling capacity is no louder than the fan moving the air. It puts out ice cold air very quickly and you can't really hear the compressor at all plus it's much more efficient on electricity because of the new design. It's very easy to install in any window that can accommodate it's size and I just recommend you get a ledge support bracket if your on a higher floor or simply place a 2x4 cut to length under it if it's on the ground floor to support it's weight. Build quality is top notch and it even supports Wifi, Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant (possibly even IFTTT) to make it more friendly to work with. I also like how small the GFCI breaker plug is on the unit, they generally are obnoxiously huge.
Windows AC support bracket if you're installing in a 2nd floor Window
amzn.to/2Xrro0q
Very cheap ultra quiet USB fans are a must have for staying cool and moving air around
• The most useful USB fa...
Watch this video and see all the wonderful applications for these cheap fans including personal cooling when you don't have access to an air condition. I also highly recommend placing them on your night stand while sleeping on hot nights to keep a silent genital breeze on you to help you sleep better. I also like how the little breeze generated from mine helps to circulate the AC cool air around the room and spread it out more uniformly.
Insulating dict sleeve for both single hose and duel hose portable AC units
amzn.to/2XvYWdL
These are a must have for floor standing units, the hoses without these sleeves installed will radiate a ton of heat back into the room working your AC unit harder and making it less efficient!

    Last time I was over there it honestly was mindblowing. Here in the states I cannot imagine life without AC, but when I was overseas, no AC but everything felt fine. If the AC goes out over here then your house can get hotter than outside temps depending on insulation, and the humidity makes it so miserable, carpet will get sticky and nasty from it, it is a total must, standard of living to have AC here for sure.

    What makes it epic is that I genuinely had fun making this video. The trick to just making videos of stuff you're already doing is that you're already passionate and having a good time. When you have to make videos to meet schedules or go for those dollar bills (we all have to do it eventually) it just doesn't have that same passion.

    People say Nevada is too hot because it is 110deg in the summer. Nope, Much easier to cool here than somewhere like Washington State or Tennessee. We have well water which means free water. Two swamp coolers, which is basically a fan and a water pump. I can get the house to 72deg on a hot day by blowing air over some wet straw. Very few humid days here, but we do have AC backup for when it does rain a few days out of the year. The best part is that you can use the screen door as an outlet for the air and sit on the porch outside all day if you want. It was crazy moving here after hearing all the myths about the desert. Winters here are comfortable also. I think we had to use heat for one month out of the year.

    DO NOT clean your filters with a brush. Those things are directional, which you will notice when you rinse the filter with water, like you should. the water will pass through freely on one side, won't do that on the other. If you use a brush you may damage that layer. Also, spray some antifungal on the evaporator (the cold radiator) about once a year. If you have a split AC (there is a unit on the inside and a unit on the outside connected to it), you should pressure-wash the condenser (the hot radiator in the outside unit) about once a year. Make sure you hold it straight at the fins cause you might bend them if you hold it at an angle.

  • @DrMacintosh

    @DrMacintosh

    He's talking about brushing the radiators, not the filter itself. The radiators are aluminum stacks which won't be seriously damaged by a brush.

    All of these AC units have flat fits, you're talking about industrial units. I've used this method for years with great success but usually use a wire brush but my wifes brush was funnier so we rolled with it. As for the anti-fungal that is a fantastic idea and I'm totally adopting that, thank you 👍 Also, you can't really pressure wash a condenser in a floor standing AC without dismantling the entire thing and dragging it outside so I setting for compressed air and the brush method, but I do totally use my pressure washer with a low pressure nozzle to clean the window units 🙏

    As for window AC units. First off avoid the ones that have the evaporator and condenser coils wrapped in stuff that looks like Christmas tinsel garlands but is actually more like razor wire. There is no way to clean dust and dirt built up out of those effecively. Get the ones that look like mini car radiators. Secondly, you need to clean the built up crap out of the coils at least once a year. The filter on the evaporator side (inside) will keep the worst of of those, but the condenser side is pulling outside air in the sides and blowing it through the coils. You can probably do an ok job with just a hose and pressure nozzle, but I always pull the case off mine and make sure it's totally clear. This also lets me make sure there's nothing in the lower tray that will plug the drain hole for the condensed water. In a lot of cases, when one of these units starts not working well, it's not because the compressor is bad or it's low on freon, it's because there's what looks like a quarter inch of felt blocking air from getting through the condenser coils.

    You can buy insulated hose for portable air conditioners on Amazon. My house don't have sash windows like yours though. The top half of my windows swing outwards so a window AC is out of the question. I have a single hose ac and it does radiate the heat back into the room. I bought a silver foil hose for it which doesn't get as hot as the hose that came with it but I'm going to buy some insulated hose instead. I am venting the hot air out a hole in the wall in the next room (There's no hallway separating the room) and the hose is 15 foot long so wrapping it is not an option.

    @@lubomirbrousek194 the reason they're bad is, that you use room air to cool down the radiator (hot part of the ac), what means you are dumping air which already has been cooled down out of window, sucking new hot air from outside. On dual hose, you suck air via one hose, cool off radiator and send it out using another one - thus the room is isolated from the outside world.

    some info. some people think it is impossible or impractical to put a window unit in a side-sliding window. it's NOT. you just need to figure out what baffles are needed; and Make 'em from cardboard or thin plywd. if it is not permitted or practical to put it in the window, put it on a stand, inside, aligned with a window. make necessary duct/baffles (cardboard, again) to mate-up with the window. and take steps to deal with the condensation. i did it this way, for several years, when living in an apartment. obviously, home security is a factor, in the implementation of these ideas. cheers googletranslate

    My dumbass got the single hose model. I wonder if there's a way to convert it into the two hose model. I took the back off of mine and the chassis is made like the two hose models. It has the cutout for another hose inside but the back cover just has the vent on it.

    Outside air intake isn't bad. You get fresh air mixed in, but if you want it cooler, I'd recommend you let the intake suck air from inside the conditioned space. preferably from as high as possible.

  • @Barnacules

    @Barnacules

    Actually, the outside air coming in goes through a sealed compartment and never actually goes into the house. Also, the units with a single hose that take air from inside the house create a negative pressure which pulls in equal amounts of warm air from outside through cracks all over in your house. Check out my video description, it's almost hilarious that companies still sell the single hose design but people like them because of how much easier they are to position with a single hose and it simplifies the cost in building them so they are cheaper. But the duel hose design is always best, I did quite a bit of research on this one because I was curious after owning so many single hose designs that didn't work nearly as well and sucked way more power for the same BTU output.

    @@full95one That makes perfect sense, luckily the air that is being pulled in from outside will tend to have a bit of a heat sink effect with the cooler inside of the case transferring some of the heat but I bet it's a neutral gain overall when you factor in the whole system.

    2:12 fork it ... the only one with two hoses that is available (in general*) in my country costs 1500€ (~$1683). I found a few window units ... which are a huge pain in the butt to mount (no sliding windows in my corner of Europe, so the windows either open like a door would, or like a basement window [but not as far]... or both depending on which way you turn the handle) since it is not only near impossible to get the window tight again while it is in, but also you have to remove it ... especially if you live ground level like me ... every night, every time weather gets bad, and even every time you leave the house. *= I don't mean that others are there but not now cause sold out cause summer ... no even in winter there would be no other.

    $1600 for a twin hose unit? That is highway robbery! Dude, just buy a single hose unit and cut a big hole in the front and glue on an intake hose and chuck it out the window. I don't think it's that simple but still, that is disgustingly expensive!

    @@Barnacules Yea ... highway robbery ... you took my exact words. Even the window units (which are way more efficient than the single hose ones*) ... even those start here at €700 (~$785). We aren't land that traditionally uses ACs, and since the last (and this year as well) the vaporization unit scam is big. So people, who don't understand, will buy those cause they are "only" 100€*² instead of a one hose one for 400€ ... so the prices for real AC units won't come down. And I can't turn on anything ... luckily temperatures are down to 20°C (68F) right now. Last week we had excess of 40°C (104F) ... all temperatures measured in the shadow. The only device I turned on in that time was a 0.25 W LED flashlight. Everythign else was too much waste heat. *=The single hose ones pull tons of hot outside air into the room *²= which they still could get cheaper if they knew / be smart enough ... and put a wet towel in front of a fan.

    Thanks for the tips, I'm running 3 window units right now but i've been thinking about picking up a couple of freestanding units for downstairs as well... I've noticed that most of the ac units you can buy these days only have the one hose though, which totally sucks... especially when you're trying to save a few bucks by picking up a used one. also I found that they eat power like nobody's business... even if i could afford the power bill, most of these use over 1200w which means you need a dedicated circuit for them which is pretty hard to come by in my house.

  • @Barnacules

    @Barnacules

    You're absolutely right, the single hose units are the worst offenders by far because they are pulling air from inside of the house creating a negative pressure which works the fan harder and the compressor harder, etc. It's just a terrible design and if your house is super leaky they will cool one room better but heat up all the outside rooms in the process. The duel hose is the only way to go but not many of the companies make them because they are more expensive since they need a 2nd sealed system instead of just one fan blowing through a big condenser and shoved outside.
