A 10 year old boy lying under his mother's big Grand Steinway in the living room listening to her play this composition brings back so many memories. Now 82, and listening to Aimi masterfully play, is so emotionally fulfilling. I have been watching Aimi at every opportunity since she was 10.

Aimi Kobayashi is so far beyond anyone I have ever heard. Every note is emotional and perfect. The way her fingers move is beyond reproach. The only one equal is Arthur Rubenstein. I listened to the other pianists and was bored. I listen to the same piece played by Aimi and Wow. Amazing. Notes seem to fly off her fingers. You can see the emotion in her face and she puts it into the piano and the piano responds to Aimi.

This brings to mind the early seventies. I borrowed that LP from Central Enoch Pratt Library in Baltimore. The introduction was simply too protracted for me at that time. Now, I still marvel at its length because it is enthralling and thoroughly engaging majestic. This lady encompasses the power and beauty of this opus with great depth and breath with “mother of pearl” artistry. I never tire of this wonderful masterpiece. PWG

Aimi's playing still transcends mundane reality and takes you into a realm of supersenuous bliss. The others play very well, and there is a technical perfection existing in a number of them. However, Aimi's playing has an ineffable emotive quality and her music is actually living and nostalgic to the extreme. Because of this Aimi will get as far as the best of them. Aimi is my winner in this competition.

+Tommy Schmitz: Yes, I am happy that you agree with me. Her former sponsor Patrick Tabet (now deceased) did not think that she should enter any competitions. Competitions do few people justice - case in point: George Li! I was very disheartening to see Aimi Kobayashi cry after the Chopin competition. It was disturbing to see her come down to the level of a mortal. There were many there that knew of her genius and reputation. What humiliation in front of the world.. I believe that Aimi will make it big - she is still very young. Those members of the jury that intentionally did evil will reap its consequences.

+Vierotchka I agree with you and I hope that Aimi will benefit from this experience as a finalist. However, Aimi was extremely upset as were many of her followers because she was not judged fairly. Again, Aimi does not need competitions - she could make it on the incomparable merit of her own playing.. The others there need competitions. Patrick Tabet her main sponsor was reluctant regarding competitions for Aimi. He knew about their notorious reputation.

Omg, I am just watching Aimi play and i am swayed again to her. This is the Aimi of old that we loved so much. I have thought ( who am I to know ? ) that the Aimi of the Curtis institute had lost some of her natural magic, become somewhat stifled and rather robotic. But this is the Aimi of old, here she is playing with emotion, like a little bird full of joy, flying ever higher, free to show her true self, unshackled and FREE again to express herself as she so wishes in a true Virtuoso performance. Lastly she is looking so slim, the young Aimi has gone and a beautiful young lady has emerged, like a butterfly, her fingers danced across the keyboard in a multi coloured rainbow of heavenly sounds , Bravo Aimi !!

She is a superior human. Yes, there were some errors from nervousness in the earlier rounds, but I've followed her closely and she is beyond a prodigy. At a early age, she could render Mozart and even Beethoven with great individuality. She has grace, original interpretations and a lot of maturity for her age. Her interpretation of the Rondo-Vivace is so refreshing. It's light, yet she can make it really sing ( at 37:22, 38:01, 40:00 onwards). Her phrasing is immaculate.

She distinguishes herself from the other pianists who play textbook-perfect and typical interpretation, by showing us something so powerful yet so delicate, so emotional yet so coherent. The worst thing about these competitions is that they can invoke the "try hard to be something she is already". She is an absolute piano genius and prodigy. +Francis Fawkes Indeed Aimi got by far the longest ovation after the Concerto. But Liu got a rousing standing ovation(the first one so far). And the conductor spend over 10 seconds hugging Liu and saying brava. I don't remember seeing that from a supposing unbiased conductor in a major competition before the winner is announced.

+Vette gaddia I noticed that also - the composer seemed to show special approval for Liu's performance; if that was not the intent, it was the effect. Perhaps he was unusually affected by it. I don't know what rules govern the behavior of composer's in this kind of scenario. It doesn't mean anything unless it influenced the jury.

David Streeter The conductor was Polish. So that should have at least a very slight impact on the jury. And the standing ovation shows the mostly European audience in awe of her. I wish her well.

+Francis Fawkes I just so much agree with you Francis, She is just a dream come true for any lover of Chopin's contribution to us all! Aimi Kobayashi is to Chopin what Mitsuko Ushida is to Mozart!

Same. I just can't find any other interpretation with the right amount of tenderness and intensity as hers. Simply the best player for this Concerto.

Kobayashi played FANTASTIC Chopin with rich melody-line and delicacy throughout the movements, natural, unpretentious yet full of drama and poem. Very gifted wonderful Japanese pianist. The Star is Born. BRAVO !!!

It was a pleasure to listen this masterpiece. Such emotions enclosed in music can be played only by person, who feels it. Aimi in my opinion plays so softly, emotionally and takes listener directly into the Chopin's world of imagination and his homesickness.

I find this to be an extraordinary performance. If you are looking for note by note perfection...you will never find it with any performer. The joy of music is the interpretation of each piece and Aimi Kobayashi delivered an emotionally charged beautiful performance. Every musician deals with nerves on some level and she played with poise, control, and no fear.... She didn't play it safe as so many do on the "big stage". A combination of strength and sensitivity... a joy to listen to.

Superb piano opening in the first movement. I'm immediately glued on to her. What an amazing young lady pianist! Incidentally, this is the first time I ever was almost in tears during the opening movement of this everlasting favorite concerto of mine. First time it ever spoke to me in this emotionally charged fashion! I am simply awed by Aimi. Just awed!

Breathtaking....there was a time when some said Asian artists were so focussed on perfecting technique that they forgot the emotion of the music. I would say she has thwarted that very narrow read of some very talented pianists.

Beautiful from the start! I love this tempo, not rushed but as it should be, majestic and grandiose! As to the lady soloist, she’s great; her playing is technically crisp and beautiful while passionate and emotional. I especially ÑOVE her use of dynamics. I don’t know how old is she but looks younger so I anticipate we’ll hear much from her. Thank you for posting.
