Ive watched this twice now and its clear that one of the main reasons Aikido doesnt get the respect it deserves is that people do not understand the majority of the system is aimed at arrest and control NOT sport fighting.

I have found that i did Aikido for 5 years or so twenty years ago and was on a door at the same time. My natural instinct was to use boxing Jujitsu and Street fighting. When i consciously tried to use aikido it didnt work. However, over the years i have successfully used aspects of Aikido in varying situations. Once to hold a violent offender whilst waiting for the police for over 15 minutes all the while the guy trying to get free! Used it a couple of times to take attackers to the floor in town with Ikkyo. So its useful when you dont think and just do it. Clubs need to stress test their techniques constantly with genuine modern day attacks. Also remember you cant do a technique without striking first. To stun the attacker and then execute the throw or lock.

totally agree about pressure testing, def lacking in most modern martial arts not just Aikido - I think the main point here is to use what is appropriate - in a world where everything is filmed you cant just punch someone unconscious anymore, and sometimes restraining moves offer a better option. Sometimes.

I understand your point in principle but the problem is aikido like all martial arts varies so much from club to club. There is no way to say any are "is this" because it isn't constant.

hmmm. I've been training iwama style for 27 years, and more recently Aikijutsu.. tbh if you pressure test 95% of traditional Aikido it fails. however if you take a pragmatic approach and apply the principles supposedly taught by the traditional kata, the "techniques" disappear but the function returns. soft flowing Aikido mis utterly useless against a resistant opponent (in my experience)
