Thanks for this post Sir. I first learned about John Nicholson in my childhood from his biography called “The Hero of Delhi” by Hesketh Pearson, from my father’s very extensive library. His victory in the 1857 mutiny was bloody and hard fought. That book got misplaced somewhere when we shifted out of Ranchi post my father’s retirement.

Nicholson was a good soldier and a great leader of men. But I still stand with all those Hindus and Muslims who fought in the War of Independence of 1857 and those who gave up their lives.

SSA g🙏🌸 I saw Nicholson Memorial (also called Nicholson's Obelisk) many years ago when i visited Hasan Abdal as a pilgrim. At that time there was only GT Road, no Pakistan Motorway. I remember below the memorial/pass was a Greek style fountain near the road, at one time according to Trotter (biographer of Nicholson in 1890s) travelers could drink water there and remember John Nicholson thankfully. According to Trotter, during the Anglo_Sikh War, Nicholson was wounded at this spot but rescued by a friendly Muslim chieftain , Sardar Karam Khan of Wah, later his son Sardar Muhammad Hayat Khan tended to the wounded and dying Nicholson at Delhi in September 1857, subsequently Hayat Khan and his offspring became quite famous during British colonial times. I also visited Nicholson's grave in Delhi, India, it was in very poor shape even then , I dont know if it still exists? All that area of Delhi has undergone lot of development in recent years. Next time i go to India/Delhi I will certainly try to check . BTW, it was also said that back during British times there used to be a cult of "Nikalsayni" Indians, mostly Hindus but also including a few Muslims and Sikhs. Do you have any knowledge about them ? It would be fascinating to learn more😊

There is a road named Nicholson Road in Lahore. I wonder if that too is named after Jack Nicholson you talked about.

It is indeed named after John Nicholson.

My maternal grandparents belonged to Ambala cantt which was an important cantonment in the British era and is still an important cantonment and air force station in India. There was an important road in this cantonment which was called Nicholson road . I think this road was also in the name of this british psychopath known as John Nicholson. This road is still called Nicholson road or not , is not known as old names of cities and roads are being changed in India during the last few years.Any way nice story about John Nicholson.

Nice to know about your roots. My maternal grandparents lived in Ambala Cantt near Staff Road. My mother was born there in 1942. My mother and maternal uncles and aunts all had finyd memories of Ambala Cantt. Cheers! 14:33

Salman sahib, I remember sometime in the late sixties while driving to Peshawar on The Grand Trunk road which was single and went through the the narrow Margalla pass where this cenotaph ‘Nicholsons memorial’ is located on the left on the right wall of the pass was a plaque and a recess into the mountain face. When the road was widened the narrow passage through the Margallas disappeared & the plaque was shifted up to the cenotaph the ornate recess was probably lost. My dad who was driving and providing a running commentary told us kids that Nicholson was killed by kala khan and the Greek like buildings commemorated that ,I recall thinking at the time that“he just made that up “

Another idea is that Margalla is also after the name of Mehrgulla the name of Hun chieftain.

Isn't it ironic that on one side we also have SirKap - Mar galla and Sir Kup... Another story is that this was Maar Gali, Gali being a local name for the passes and Maar means Snake in Persian. This place used to be notorious for Russell Vipers.
